Quote:
Network is a 1976 American satirical film released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer about a fictional television network, Union Broadcasting System (UBS), and its struggle with poor ratings. The film was written by Paddy Chayefsky and directed by Sidney Lumet, and stars Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch and Robert Duvall and features Wesley Addy, Ned Beatty, and Beatrice Straight.

The film won four Academy Awards, in the categories of Best Actor (Finch), Best Actress (Dunaway), Best Supporting Actress (Straight), and Best Original Screenplay (Chayefsky).

Network has continued to receive recognition, decades after its initial release. In 2000, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". In 2002, it was inducted into the Producers Guild of America Hall of Fame as a film that has "set an enduring standard for U.S. American entertainment." In 2006, Chayefsky's script was voted one of the top-ten screenplays by the Writers Guild of America, East. In 2007, the film was 64th among the Top 100 Greatest U.S. American Films as chosen by the American Film Institute, a ranking slightly higher than the one AFI had given it ten years earlier.

This is hands down, the best flawed movie I have ever seen. It's head is in the right place with it being critical about what the effects TV has on people (Even more impressive since the film came out in 1976), but it goes off track a couple of times, involving an affair with Faye Dunaway. The film sets up the affair just so towards the end of the film, the man she is seeing can call her the devil with the way she has handeled The Max Beasley show. I found it annoying that they only set up that relationship for one line (Which I can't remember right now because I am sick. If you are finding my review a little jumbled to read, that's why).

With the exception of that one relationship, and another subplot involving a US Communist, the film is pretty damn good. The performances are spot on.

Flawed, but what isn't?

This is about as close to perfect as cinema gets. It's relevant 30 years later and still manages to impress. I loved it.

A fascinating and chilling classic that is eerily prophetic. Fantastic performances from Peter Finch, William Holden, Ned Beatty and Faye Dunaway (as well as the rest of the main cast). This film features some of the best dialogue I have ever heard in a movie (the screenplay won an Oscar). Sidney Lumet directed a truly wonderful movie 30 years ago and it still resonates today, more than ever. One of my all-time favorites.

Wow...the guy who wrote this movie was even better at predicting the future than Psychic Sybill herself. Incredible dialouge that is so ridiculous, it works. And the conference room scene between Peter Finch and Ned Beatty with the dark lighting and green lamps was GENIOUS! One of the coolest scenes I've ever seen in a film.
Fantastic performances all around, a lasting effect, and some outright hilarious moments...what more could you ask of it?

I liked everything except Faye Dunaway. She talks to fast. The rest of the acting is great, the script is brilliant, and the ending is perfect.

I found it in parts disturbing and insightful and brilliant, and at times utterly laughable.

Its a great movie for stilling being as poignant today as it was 30 years ago, but for me some of it doesn't work. The whole sub plot of terrorist group doesn't work for me, and the ending
Spoiler: show
Killing Beale, seems for me a bit extreme, and not very believable.
but everything else works, and everyone in the cast gives top notch performances. The very end of the movie with the 4 tv screens is the perfect ending for the movie.

My only complaint was the ending, it was a bit over the top.

Other than that though, I really really loved this. Amazing acting and dialogue, it's extremely relevant and eerie, and Lumet's clean cold direction fits the newsroom perfectly. By the way, regarding the Dunaway subplot, at first it does seem out of place, but I think it's there to tie in the message of tv humanoid domination into the real world, ironically enough it happens to Dunaway herself.

It's hard to believe Lumet made this and Dog Day in back to back years... Both masterpieces IMO.

5/5

One thing, I can't believe Beatrice Straight won an Oscar for this... I thought she was kind of overacting. :|

Mostly just look at my sig.
Sidenote: I am very disappointed that so many people claim the ending is "over-the-top". I can't believe how perfect I found this ending, the entire point was the build up. The scene with Beale getting yelled at by the industry guy (need to see this again) was leading up to it. That was where the film excelled past the "realism" that it may have seemed, and was anointed the title of "surreal". The finale just capped all of this off, it would have sucked if it wasn't over the top
Also it made a dark but necessary point to how greedy and inhuman people in this world have become.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

This and The Truman Show are great companion pieces. The latter is another film that's aged really, really well.
