Suitably gritty, solid action thriller from F. Gary Gray that features female bank robbers instead of the norm.

Strong performances from a crop of talented African-American actresses: Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, Kimberly Elise.

B+

Post Re: Set It Off
This is definitely a product of the 'Point Break' operatic cops 'n robber formula of the '90s, (John C. McGinley reprises his role as the asshole authoritative cop) but it's a lot better than similar movies. I think what keeps it from becoming totally ridiculous is the way the film exposes how hard it can be for single black mothers to make it in a system geared to oppress them. The film deals with these issues without sinking to the ghetto-porn levels of Precious. At times the shots are a bit amateurish, and the action scenes are all very over-the-top, but it just exposes how it's a product of it's time.
