 Clue Clue Quote: Clue is a 1985 Comedy mystery film based on the board game of the same name (Cluedo outside North America). The film is a murder mystery set in a Gothic Revival mansion, and is styled after Murder by Death (which also featured Clue star Eileen Brennan) and other various murder/dinner parties of mystery. The film was directed by Jonathan Lynn, who collaborated on the script with John Landis, and stars Tim Curry, Eileen Brennan, Martin Mull, Lesley Ann Warren, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Madeline Kahn, Colleen Camp, and Lee Ving. The film was produced by Debra Hill.
In keeping with the nature of the board game, in theatrical release the movie was shown with one of three possible endings, with different theaters receiving each ending. (In the film's home video release, all three endings were included.) The film received mixed reviews and did poorly at the box office, ultimately grossing $14,643,997 domestically in the USA alone.
Clue was Paramount's first adaptation of a now current Hasbro property (though Clue was owned by General Mills' subsidiary Parker Brothers under license from Waddingtons at the time, not Hasbro), predating by 19 years its deal to distribute other films and television series based on Hasbro properties. Universal Studios announced that a remake is in the works with a release date set for 2013. Noticed we had no thread for this movie. Blasphemous. Gloriously, insanely funny. A

I still enjoyed it, but the banter didn't resonate with me as much, and the multipe twist ending was so screwball comedy I couldn't really get into it. A lineup of a great cast, plus my fave David Niven. I think I will try to rewatch it again, as I've only seen it once and maybe missed alot.

But there's so much to love: Maggie Smith and David Niven as the Nick and Nora Charles-esque couple, Peter Sellers' Charlie Chan takeoff, Peter Falk doing a killer Bogart. I especially love the dialogue given to Falk; it's all so overly-melodramatic and goofy. Do yourself a favor: try it again.
And, as Libs pointed out, a rare screen role for Truman Capote, only adding to the film's value.
I now return this thread to Clue.

It was alright. I'm frankly amazed anyone remembers it. A generous C. Maybe it was meant to be seen as a kid, if so that would explain some of the reactions. But as an adult I didn't get much out of it.

Camp classic. What a hillarious and utterly entertaining film. Definately will require at least one re-watch if not numerous in the coming months/years. Surprisingly, I'd not heard of this film until a friend recommended it to me. I was definately very impressed as this was thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. And the three endings? Perfect.

Funny, just put this as one of the most underrated films, and here it is again. I was gonna check for this too. I love this movie. One of those movies I can watch all the time. Everyone has perfect timing in this film.

The only thing memorable was Colleen Camp's maid.
But due to Dolce's constant quoting, I found myself thinking of this movie at the end of Munich when it's all done and he goes home and makes love to his wife.

Murder by Death was recently released on DVD for the first time, I believe, and it's been at long wait on Netflix for a while, so it must have some fans. I'm interested in it.
Clue, though, remains one of my favorite films. A.

I think this movie got a bad rep when it came out due an expectation that a movie based on the board game would in fact be a mystery.
It is instead a brilliant comedy of manners, with great dialogue and excellent ensemble acting.

If Clue was released today it's screenplay (at very least) would be considered biting and would be considered one of the best satircal comedy films of the year.
Yeah the music is cheesy and some of the direction is uninspired, but the acting by the entire cast, the delivery, the screenplay... classic.
