Post WoKJ MPA Category Confusion Thread
This is now the thread for any questions regarding the categories (i.e: is Maria Bello supporting or lead?).

I don't like any of the three options personally. It opens the door to all kinds of subjectivity, bias, controversy etc etc. I'd say just allow people to send in five nominations and then tabulate the score. Simple. Fini.

However, I know the Oscars have a new format they adopted a couple of years ago where people rank their nominations in each category. In which case, each ranking has a certain point value (1st=5 points, 2nd=4 points...). THAT could certainly allow for more flexibilty and maybe benefit some of the smaller films while still upholding the integrity and objectivity of the process.

That's basically what #3 is, lol.

Way to read, Cotton (or is it: way to write torrino!)

What was wrong with last year's lineup?

Although all 3 options could work and could be interesting in their own way.

We shouldn't try to be different from Oscar just for the sake of it and sacrifice deserving nominees in the mean time. For example, if the consensus this year on Best Actor is the Oscar's top 5-7 contenders, so be it. Except for avoiding category confusions, I wouldn't change a thing from last year. So people complained Catalina Sandino Moreno was nominated, but she was deserving from everbody who saw the film. To assume the reason she was nominated could only be people copying from Oscar ballot because the film was too small is preposterous.

That being said, I support some kind of ranking system, because it gives performances like Amy Adam's more chance, as the number of people who've seen the film is small, but every one of them is likely to place her as No. 1 in the supporting actress ballot.

The ranking system has to be ballanced though. It shouldn't be exploited, and it can't be Idol-style where you are given certain amount of votes and can allocate all of them to one person/film.

Shouldnt we put a link for this in the award section also, not everyone is going to go to the water cooler (I went to the award section thinking they would be put there)

Now I have 2 movie award shows to do votes for!

I think this year, there is more than enough love toward Munich and King Kong (if people are worrying about the two) at KJ that they will survive a normal or any adjusted voting process. Also with Batman Begins, Sin City, and Sith, the awards are not going to be dominated by smaller films as Oscar seems to be heading, if that's what people are worrying about. It'll look much more different than last year's comparison. In the mean time, we shouldn't try to twist methods so that films like Brokeback, A History of Violence, and GNAGL will be at added disadvantages. They already are by the mere nature of fewer people having seen them.

I think that's all I have. :)

I think your right Xiyun, I think mostly blockbusters will be nominated (although one or two small films may make picture, you never know!)

Ok so my thoughts on it: I'm guessing the only reason you guys want a change in the proccess is because of people whining about nominees and stuff.

REality: It's not gonna happen. People will whine (myself included) no matter wht you do and what the nominees are. That will be the case for any awards thing no matter how big or small and there's little you can do about it.

Yes I wish Julie Delpy would have gotten a best actress nomination last year, while i think bryce dallas howard wasn't quite worthy and am still bitter that she won breakthrough over catalina sandino moreno lol. and i wish dogville would have gotten something.

but there were also some great choices. all the awards were million dollar baby were worthy and i assume it got them because people liked it and not jsut because of the oscars. kate winslet and eternal sunshine for best picture. there were at least a few difference from the oscars that made the awards have stronger nominees and winners from socars even if there were others that were weaker.

my vote: keep it the same!

Well, I don't knwo how you guys did it last year, but I'd just assign poitn values to the ranking. Not necessarily the way the Oscars do it because I think it would be stupid to discard the rest of the submissions after someon'e first choice if that first choice was popular enough to be a lock for a nod.

Yeah, we do need both.

Especially Documentary. 2005 was a huge year for documentaries, so why wouldn't we have an award for it?

I agree mostly with Rod and xiayun: keep it the same, but allow for the ranking system. Also, keep the nomination total at 5 per category!

Oh, and I support a ranking system as well (1 gets 5 points, 2 gets 4 points, etc.), but then again, if people don't pay attention to that (like some people nominated me in the WOKJ Poster Awards, when it wasn't allowed), it won't be good.

I agree in retrospect, we have better nominees and winners than Oscar had in a lot of categories. Acknowledging Eternal Sunshine is a great achievement and was the one Oscar snub that people were unhappy with. I'd love to see more foreign presences like The Motorcycle Diaries and House of Flying Daggers, but we all have preferences that weren't met here and there.

Just ranking nominees 1-5 and tabulating the totals will be a good adjustment to try.

Well yeah for documentry we could have that, I was just thinking though how many people have seen enough forign films? It will be like people will just vote for whatever.

For categories, here are what we had last year:

Best Picture
Best Director
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress
Best Original Screenplay
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Ensemble
Foreign Language Film
Overlooked Film
Entertainer of the Year
Breakthrough Performance
Best Editing
Best Cinematography
Best Art Direction
Costume Design
Best Visual Effect
Best Makeup
Best Sound
Best Score
Best Soundtrack
Best Song
Best Animated Feature
Best Comedy
Best Horror
Best Sequal/Remake

I'd keep all of them. :) Also we have enough good sequals/remakes and comedies this year that we should expand them to 5 nominees. I wouldn't mind to see Horror to go 5 either since there were a lot of them last year. I'd keep Animated Feature at 3 nominees.

Well, you'd probably have the option of opting out of a given category if you can't fill 5 slots.

I dunno how I feel about the comedy, horror and sequel categories; they seem kind of cheap and unnecessary.
