 The Royal Tenenbaums
The Royal Tenenbaums Quote: The Royal Tenenbaums is a 2001 American comedy-drama film directed by Wes Anderson about three gifted siblings who experience great success in youth, and even greater disappointment and failure after their eccentric father leaves them in their adolescent years. An ironic and absurdist sense of humor pervades the film.
Gene Hackman won a Golden Globe for his performance and Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson's screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award.

Does sly, immensely dry humor very well, but falters when it comes to being dramatic. Not a big deal, though, considering the film is mostly a comedy. Of the rather large and talented cast, the best performance is surprisingly given by Gwyneth Paltrow, who deserved an Oscar nomination for her performance here. B+

Wes Anderson's best film to date. A hilarious, unpredictable and well-made comedy with an excellent cast.

Not quite as good as Rushmore, but then, almost nothing is. It's hilarious, melancholy, and looks gorgeous. Has really risen to be one of my favorites over the last 4 years or so. Fantastic. I want to live in the Tenenbaum house.
Gene Hackman was robbed of an Oscar.

While I didn't like The Life Aquatic, I thought this was pretty good, fortunately. Awesome ensemble cast.
The emotional factor wasn't very strong, which is one of the few problems it has. Still, great movie.

 Re: The Royal Tenenbaums
The cult for Anderson is one of those things I try to carefully avoid, like that one which has recently expanded to a recognized religion for Nolan. Still, I must admit I love this film in a way I love very few. It's not one of those, like All About Eve, or 2001: A Space Odyssey that I can say "this is the most technically blah blah beautiful genius blah revolution blah." Nor is it something like, say, Scott Pilgrim, or Fight Club where I can say "it has flaws but I can't help how much I adore this." It is some sort of odd blend. It is flawed but also technically brilliant, I sort of uncontrollably love it, but not always. That scene where Luke Wilson shaves his head and then does the emo move, yikes cinematography!

There's something about Anderson style that seems grating, but there's no denying his skill.
