 The General's Daughter
The General's Daughter Quote: The General's Daughter is a 1999 film starring John Travolta. The plot concerns the mysterious death of the daughter of a prominent general. The movie is based on the novel by the same name written in 1992 by Nelson DeMille, and was directed by Simon West. The film was a box office success grossing $22 million in its opening weekend and $102 million in its total domestic run.
Topics of interest include the integrity of junior officers in bringing justice against senior ones at great odds and at personal peril. There is also interesting background material regarding the militia movement, "Freedom Fighters", and the prospect of military use of urban and psychological warfare tactics.
The plot of the movie is significantly different from that of the novel although the outcome is the same. For instance, in the novel Brenner never meets Elizabeth Campbell. The first time he sees her is at the murder scene. Great plot, great performances, but a somewhat predictable ending. Still, I loved the heck out of it. A-

Hey, alright - I agree with zingaling about something!
This is a very entertaining movie with solid writing and acting - it was way under-rated by critics when it was first released.
5 out of 5.

I saw it a while ago, but I remember it being serviceable and nothing more. It was surprisingly brutal for such a pedestrian thriller.

What a seemingly simple and yet well-made and tight thriller it was. Its one of the best in its genre that I have seen in the past 6-7 years. John Travolta delivers one of his better performances in this one, but James Cromwell and Timothy Hutton really shine. The acting in the entire movie, even from the whole supporting cast is pretty good. While this movie isn't an action flick, it has just enough action to entertain action fans as well as thriller fans. But it's not the action scenes that make this movie fascinating, but much rather its intriguing plot that unfolds slowly but gradually and has some shocks prepared for the viewers. I appreciated the way it unfolded a lot and the conclusion of the movie is great. It is definitely one of the best military-themed thrillers I have ever seen. It has some suspenseful scenes, some good action scenes and a great finale all combined with a good and powerful story.

Man I guess I saw this a little too late, and it reminded me a lot of Basic actually, which I always found to be a very average film as well. I guessed the villain early on, and apart from the good acting all around, I found the dialogue pretty unbearable at times. Maybe it's because I saw it on TNT as well. I did enjoy it somewhat though. B-/B

I saw it a long time ago. I remember think it was a little tedious and nothing special.

 Re: The General's Daughter
I just watched it again and quite love it, an excellent thriller with peak Travolta. The southern east US setting sets a great mood and the murder investigation on an army base is told in an engaging fashion. I especially liked Woods' role too, he's just so good being snarky that it works well for him not to turn out as the bad guy. Simon West is also at the top of his game with this, delivering another great 90's gem.
