Quote:
School of Rock, also called The School of Rock, is a 2003 American musical comedy film directed by Richard Linklater, written by Mike White, and starring Jack Black. The main plot follows rock singer and guitarist, Dewey Finn (portrayed by Black), who was unanimously kicked out of his band and subsequently disguises himself as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school and forms a band of fifth-grade students to win the upcoming Battle of the Bands so he can pay his rent for his apartment.

A nice surprise from Mr. Jack Black, here. B+

Very funny movie. Jack Black gave the single most joyful and funniest performance, filled with great energy and vigor, I've seen in a long time. Mike White wrote a truly great script which Richard Linklater directs very well (I loved the two tracking shots- I think that may be what they are called- where Black sings the "Hardcore" song to his students and the ending scene). The songs written for the movie were pretty good, the soundtrack filled with classic rock was fantastic. I loved all of the classic rock references all over the place in this movie. And for once the kids in this movie were all GREAT! ("I'm not cool.")

I had no idea the movie would be as good as it really is. Honestly, I was expecting maybe a "B" worthy movie, but I was blown away. It was original, funny, the music scenes rocked, and overall a very very fun movie. A lot of replayability. A-

I agree with the accolades. What a wonderful, wonderful movie, despite the "oh god, my eyes, it hurts" premise. A minor miracle.

Loved it! Very cute and sometimes hilarious! I still find it funny when Joan Cusack says something like "excuse me! Yes, excuse me. I've just been informed all of your children are missing. So ..." I always crack up at that scene.

9/10 (A-)

Jack Black is easily one of the funniest actors right now, and this movie shows it. He just has so much charisma, and School of Rock succeeds because of him. A fine, entertaining film.

This movie is the definition of a feel-good film. My main problem with it that despite marketed this way, it wasn't funny whatsoever. I am not even sure if it ever was supposed to be a comedy or not. I hope nnot because it was a good movie, but a terrible comedy. Jack Black is really a blast in this one and only his presence saves it from being average. Also, the kids actually act pretty well for a change and the movie is full with classic titles of rock jusic as well as references. Well done!

Fun movie. Did not accept for this movie to be this good but it was. The song that the kid Zach played was actually very good. The humor is great. Just a all around good movie for the summer. B+/B

It's good and charming, but not really as funny as I wanted it to be. I have no idea how this got the RT and metacritic scores it did.

This movie reminds me of a bouncy yet weak school kid attempting competition sports.

Its tries so hard but ends up being completely ineffectual, Jack Black is at his best when he isn't straining like this.

Loads of fun, very funny, and it's got heart. Jack Black is at his best here and the music is terrific. A fitting tribute to rock n' roll.

What he said, but lower the grade to a B+ and bump the 7 times to something like 17.

I rewatch movies way more than going to a movie theatre or renting new movies.

It came out at the absolutely perfect time for people my age, just as rock n' such was becoming popular. Jack Black will never fit a character quite as well as he fit this one. Fantastic movie.

Excellent movie, supremely entertaining. This is the role Jack Black was born to play. And the kids are alright too.

Gotta love Linklater... he can take what appeared to be a generic POS movie with kids and turn it into a gem.

Dewy: And fifty-four is forty-five more than what is the answer, Marta?
Marta: Nine.
Dewey Finn: No, it's eight.
Marta: ...No, it's nine.
Dewey Finn: ...Yes, I was testing you... it's nine. And that's a magic number.

School of Rock: Formula Fun

Considering the talent involved, School of Rock had a very homogenized tone to it, not that that's a bad thing if you're looking for uniform product. It does ride on the back of Jack Black, so if you're not a fan - skip School ! But, yeah, I got sucked in and ended up saying "ahhhhh" just like most of the other paying customers. Rebel-lite.

2 out of 5.
