 Alien: Resurrection
Alien: Resurrection Quote: Alien Resurrection is a science fiction film released in 1997 by 20th Century Fox. Directed by French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the film is based on a screenplay by Joss Whedon. With a budget of $70 million, Alien Resurrection was the first film in the Alien series to be filmed outside of England at Fox studios in Los Angeles, California.
Set 200 years after the preceding installment, Alien 3, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is cloned and an Alien queen is surgically removed from her body. The United Systems Military hopes to breed Aliens to study and research on the spaceship USM Auriga, using human hosts kidnapped and delivered to them by a group of mercenaries. The Aliens escape their enclosures, while Ripley and the mercenaries attempt to escape and destroy the Auriga before it reaches its destination, Earth.
Alien Resurrection was released on November 26, 1997 and received mixed reviews from film critics. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times felt "there is not a single shot in the movie to fill one with wonder", while Desson Thomson of The Washington Post said the film "satisfactorily recycles the great surprises that made the first movie so powerful". Whoops, forgot this one, Terminator. Anyways, I was incredibly dissapointed. C+

I actually really like Resurrection... the underwater scene is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time, simply because Resurrection was one of the first movies I ever really watched and absorbed as a kid. I rewatched it not too long ago, and while it's not as good as Alien or Aliens, I find it a whole, WHOLE lot better than Alien3, and I think it gets a bad rep that I just don't understand. I give Resurrection a... B-, while I get Alien an A- and Aliens an A, while Alien3 scores a C-. I really did not like Alien3, heh.

That's a great scene. =D>
But, for some reason, I was just dissapointed. And, this was after I rewatched it last year. When I saw it as a kid, I loved it.

Alien - A-3. Alien: Ressurection - B-4. Alien³ - D-Yes, I hated Alien³ THAT much. The first two movies are miles and miles better than #3 and #4.

it was slightly better than Alien 3. Had some cool special effects and the ripley clone was actually a decent concept.

It's a big improvement from the third installment, but nowhere nearly as good as the first two. The took the horrible ending of the third and at least did some interesting things with Ripley. And yes, the underwater scene is the highlight. My grade: B-.

B-
Once again, I agree with Atoddr. What a huge improvement over the third movie. It still doesn't reach the brilliance of the first two whatsoever, but it has plenty of really nice and gory action scenes and Jeunet gives the movie his distinct visual style that I thought fit the movie well. It's a good sci-fi actioner, but the ending is somewhat of a letdown. It just seems a bit too unexciting.

Pros:
Very pretty to look at, the effects were pretty great
Extremely gory (was the shot through the guy's mouth into his stomach the first of it's kind?)
The underwater/ambush sequence was inspired
Cons:
Poor script (I can't believe Joss Whedon wrote this, it sure doesn't make me want to see anything non-Firely/Serenity that he's done)
Paper thin characters
Some very goofy moments
Overall, it adds up to an above average monster movie, but far below the standards of the first two films.

Joss' script really isn't very good. He complaints that Jeunet just didn't 'get it,' but almost everything that's on the page is on screen. Joss fucked up.

Alien 3's better.

After watching the producers cut of Alien 3 making it much much better. I give it a solid B now after originally giving it an D. Ressurection is a very flashy film that works most of the time, despite its very thin plot. Its got some fun and adds a little more depth the series, too bad this is where it ended. Its a lot of fun but could use a little more to be the last of a great series.
Alien- A
Aliens- A+
Alien 3- Originally a D, now B
Alien Resurrection B+

A terrible movie that was an abortion to the ALIEN Franchise.. The whole "Maternal Instinct" plot with Ripley and the "Newborn" was as laughable as it comes and Sigourney Weaver has no right to criticize a movie like AVP when ALIEN RESURRECTION wasn't exactly anything to write home about, especially since the movie did offer some of her input in it besides Whedon.. This movie get's an "F" and the best movie in this series was the 2nd movie and they should've just stopped after that and quit while they were ahead....

Come on BKB, an F meaning Alien 3 is better for you and you like AVP more. This at least felt more like an Alien film, with the setting pieces which were quite beautiful as they were disgusting.

ALIEN 3: The Director's Cut(and ONLY The Director's Cut) was far better than Alien Resurrection any day of the week and Yes, I did enjoy AVP alot more than Resurrection to.. I think if they would've done away with the whole "Maternal Instinct" in Resurrection, I would've enjoyed it more.. That whole plotline ruined the movie and Sigourney Weaver should never of been allowed to voice her brief input in the movie..

The really dark sense of humour that the film attempts works for me for about fifteen minutes. After that, it just gets really, really bad. The film looks nice, but that's about all it's got going for it. Sigourney Weaver is a real badass for about half the film, but then she melts and becomes really boring. Winona Ryder - wow, talk about a terrible performance. Far too much attitude in her android. The script is pretty bad; the terrible acting combined with cheesy dialogue makes it sound even worse. Not to mention the story is just lame. The 'love scene' was one of the funniest scenes I've ever watched. The visuals are a marked improvement over the other films, but it's to no avail. The underwater scene is kinda cool, but ruined by the acting; the scene with the hybrid getting sucked out of a tiny hole in the window is incredibly gory, but, again, ruined by Weaver's crying face. Just a terrible attempt at an Alien black comedy.

Whenever I think of this movie I just get an image of the Milky Bar Alien thing and want to puke. Horrific entry into the Alien franchise and I often wonder why the hell it got made in the first place.
