Quote:
The Island is a 2005 American science fiction/thriller film directed by Michael Bay and starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. It was released on July 22, 2005 in the US. It was nominated for 3 awards including the Teen Choice award.

It is described as a pastiche of "escape-from-dystopia" science fiction films of the 1960s and 1970s such as Fahrenheit 451, THX 1138, Parts: The Clonus Horror, and Logan's Run. Set in the year 2019, the movie's plot revolves around the struggle of Ewan McGregor's character to fit into the highly structured world he lives in, and the series of events that unfolds when he questions exactly how truthful that world really is.

The film, which cost $126 million to produce, earned only $36 million at the United States box office, but earned $127 million overseas, for a $162 million worldwide total. The original score for the film was composed by Steve Jablonsky.

Saw it tonight, not exactly sure how my review/grade will go. For those wondering, it is good, but it is just very odd. The trailers really give no clue as to what the film is about, which makes the viewing experience better. At same time it gets too caught up in its trying to explain things that it really doesn't explain much at all.

Overall, enjoyable, but not spectacular. I'll give it a B- for now, with final grade and review forthcoming.

You're such a tease. Tell me, how are the action sequences? Baytastic? The freeway chase in particular.

Just for loyal...

The special effects are quite good actually. The freeway chase scenes, yes scenes, are well made and quite extravegent. The director makes excellent use of a half-dozen Dodge Magnums, several modified Chrysler 300s, a Hummer H2 and even an armored car.

Several other action scenes are also quite well done, including a dramatic fall off a building. The problem is they all come towards the end, and while the build up is good and raises some legitimate "moral" questions, the film feels very disjointed.

I absolutely loved this movie. One of the best movies of the summer. Great special effects. Great performances by Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. The best movie of July ahead of Fantastic Four.

We must have seen two different movies as she was more annoying then Dakota Fanning in War of the Worlds. And while I agree it was better then Fantastic Four, that isn't saying much.

Hmm, I can't wait. Seems like we've got a good popcorn flick on our hands, but not too deep? "Brave New World", which this was supposed to be based upon, is one of my favorite novels ever. I hope we get a *little* bit of substance, atleast, ala I, Robot (Which I loved)

Full review comming soon?

I never really was a big fan of Michael Bay. In fact I hate all his movies other than the Rock. When I saw the Island I know full well I may have some flaw against Michael Bay but I also knew that Im a sucker for sci-fi Brave New World type movies like I Robot and Minority Report. The Island was weaker than both of the former and latter I mentioned but its still enjoyable. And as always some directors never change and you cannot call it a Michael Bay movie without

High Explosions

Steve Buschemi

the jerk in the middle of the movie who finally finds a heart and isnt so much a bad guy anymore

car chases..car chases...car chases

moronic cliches like dangling off a skyscraper with only one hand holding on to the ledge or reaching out for another person's arm. And of course the same cliche were the bad guy and good guy square off in the catwalk

close up zoom of gun fights

moronic plot holes like if one guy speaks with an american accent and another guy speaks with a scottish accent, it would be obvious who you can tell is the clone or not

and of course

total disregard to innocent bystanders when our protaganists try to escape the clutches from our evil villians

Nevertheless, The Island does enter the issue about what constitutes as a human being or not. Michael Bay actually makes it sound like hes directing something like AI or Minority Report despite all the flaws I mentioned. I think the hidden message may be used by Fox news to stir up trouble with pro-abortionist but I think its supposed to be a typical fun Michael Bay movie.

Oh and Im actually giving it a B which is the same grade I gave The Rock. Other Michael Bay jewels like Armageddon and Pearl Harbor have gotten F's from me. Bad Boys 1 I gave a C+ to and BB2 I gave a C to

A Michael Bay movie with social relevance? I don't believe it.

Actually I was honestly impressed with the moral issues presented and the social context. Sadly it was sort of ruined by the end of the movie.

I just saw an advance screening of it yesterday, and it was pretty good. I liked the plot and premise of it, even though going into the movie ,I wasn't sure what it was about. Scarlett Johansson was a little annoying in her role.. I like her, and think she's beautiful, but, at times, I was just wishing for an entirely different actress to be up there. Ewan McGregor was pretty good in his role, and he had me laughing a lot with some of the things his characters said and did. The make-out scene was quite humorous, and so was the scene where Lincoln's friend is telling him about do new word 'Dude'. The action sequences were pretty good, but a lot of it was cliches, like someone mentioned above. What I really didn't like was the ending. I was filled with too many questions about it, and what would happen to them afterwards, that it took down my enjoyment level of the movie for now. As of now, I'll give it a B, but that might change on another viewing.

B

the entire premise was just so far fetched and unbelievable, some impossible impossible stunts .. brought the grade down for one of the most action packed movies i've ever seen.

plus any movie littered with product placement deserves a low great.

What do you mean, product placement? I saw the making and noticed lots of placement for the cars used, but what else?

Meh, I don't really care for an OD of explosions. I don't mind it, so long as it isn't so ridiculous that it gives you a headache.

Sounds like an overblown action movie, not scifi.

That was my grade as well. It just got too silly at the end, though the beginning was quite good, don't you agree?

Yeah, the product placement was ridiculous. Like the big MSN thing in the phone booth, the Aquafina water (I think that was the water it was), the Nokia phone that they zoomed in on, then the big NOKIA written on his little screen behind it. That really did bother me because it was extremely obvious. It's not like it was done in a subtle way, it was just way out there. The first tiem I noticed it, the Entertainment Weekly article I read before seeing it popped into my head. The article said that Bay had gotten $850,000 more for the production of the movie due to advertisements.. and it showed.

Yeah, it was Aquifina. Reminded me of Minority Report.

The best way to describe The Island, is to say that it's THX-1138 on massive amounts of steriods, though not quite as smart, or good. That's not a bad thing.

As of now, this is probably Michael Bay's second best film behind The Rock. The Island contains some of the year's best action sequences, and is fun throughout. It's also quite smart too, which is an unexpected turn for Michael Bay.

This is one of the most entertaining films I have seen so far in 2005.
