OMG...horrible nominations!! No Clive, Natalie or Ensemble for Closer. It deserved one over Finding Neverland, Ray and Hotel Rwanda. No David C or Uma, although Jaime Foxx gets another supporting nod for a lead performance. Cloris Leachman? Hopefully the Oscars will fix this mess. [-X

A good group of male actors.

Quote: Jamie Foxx / COLLATERAL - Max - DreamWorks SKG Does anybody doubt his future Oscar win now? Quote: James Garner / THE NOTEBOOK - Duke - New Line Cinema Freddie Highmore / FINDING NEVERLAND - Peter Llewelyn Davies - Miramax Films Impressive. No Closer at the SAGs. Easy win for Cate Quote: Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture THE AVIATOR - Miramax Films FINDING NEVERLAND - Miramax Films HOTEL RWANDA - United Artists MILLION DOLLAR BABY - Warner Bros. RAY - Universal Pictures SIDEWAYS - Fox Searchlight Pictures
I think Sideways or Baby will win this... but Ugh, 6 pictures.
Opinion: Great day for Hotel Rwanda. It finally shows real precursor strength as the legitimate 6th place contendor. But Ray was able to get basically the same nominations for the same important categories, so while the number of films is down to about 6 legitimate films, we're no closer than we were to determining the 5th slot.
Giving Ray the edge because of DGA, tech potential, highest box office and Jamie Foxx's likely win.

Amazing for James Garner. And very deserving too. I am very surprised that Owen was snubbed too. A huge overall snub for Closer, I have no idea why :???:
Anyway, as andaroo said, it is a big day for Hotel Rwanda and I am still certain that it will be nominated over Ray.
I am also surprised by Catalina Sandino Moreno being nominated over Julie Delpy...

Best ensemble is SAG equivalent of best picture, and we have the exact 6 contenders that we've saying all along. Great day for Hotel Rwanda, and I do think it will be a very close race whichever film got left out in best picture.
Closer should've 3 nominations.
No surprise in actor and actress categories. Clint is out of the actor race, Javier is looking shakier, and both Uma and Julie took a major hit. I wouldn't be surprised if oscar matches exactly for those two categories.

My favorite surprise nomination has to be Cloris Leachman for Spanglish. Although I wish they would've nominated Tea Leoni, too. And Uma got snubbed...

Ridiculous snub of Clive Owen and Natalie Portman. And I still can't believe it when I see Jamie Foxx up for best supporting actor, not because of the category discrepancy, but because Tom Cruise absolutely owned him in that movie. Foxx struck me as just slightly above average and now to see him up there being recognized as a top 5 supporting actor performance of the year........it's just a little hard to swallow. The guy will get his just desserts with lead actor, so I really hope the Academy snubs him in the supporting and opens the spot up for someone more deserving (CLIVE OWEN or David Carradine).

Hm, unexpected snubs for Closer...
But also not so unexpected.
Huge loss of steam + not much critic circle attention + surprises in the supporting category every year = no nomination for Natale Portman/Clive Owen?

I don't expect James Garner to get a nod at oscar. It's more of a sentimental pick considering they are giving him a career award as well. He will be replaced by Owen. The one that got a boost in this category is Highmore.

Best Supporting Actress is an interesting category. Linney, Blanchett and Madsen are the only locks in it so far.

I still believe Natalie is a lock at No. 4. Either SAG hates Closer or they refuse to consider any of the actors/actresses in the film supporting, which had happened before. Sophie Okonedo has taken over the No. 5 spot in my prediction. For people who think Hotel Rwanda is Don Cheadle and nothing else, I can actually see it getting 6 nominations.

I don't really think it's that surprising to see Natalie and Clive surprised, since when you have category confusion (lead, supporting?) performances often get snubbed altogether at SAG.
Hmmmm...
THe actress category is very stron...and yet why do I find it so boring this year? :???:

The thing about Closer and the actual Oscar nods is this is an "actors movie" and the SAG is where a film like this should get the most support.

SAG's biggest differences usually come in the supporting categories. Remember the year Cate Blanchett was nominated for Bandits and Dakota Fanning for I Am Sam? They had zero oscar chances. Kate Winslett (for Iris) and Marisa Tomei (for In The Bedroom) replaced them at the Oscars. Also, Marcia Gay Harden didn't have a SAG nom. and went on to win for Pollack. I also think she missed out on a nomination for Mystic River, but got the Oscar nom.
I doubt if Cloris Leachman gets an Oscar nod. I still think Natalie Portman is in the running and could even win the Golden Globe. I also expect James Garner to miss out, but I think Freddie Highmore has a good chance.
IMHO, the lead categories look pretty solid.

Yep, I agree. Last year, Chris Cooper was nominated out of nowhere. In 2002, there was a category mixup of some kind that left Meryl Streep out. In 2001, you mentioned Cate Blanchett and Dakota Fanning, but also Judi Dench and Cameron Diaz were nominated, but both missed out on the Oscars. The only nominee was Helen Mirren, who won the SAG. So I think it's still anybody's guess who is nominated. I see four as locks; Cate, Virginia, Laura and Natalie. The last spot is up in the open between Kate, Sophie, and Sharon.
