1. The Aviator -- 1/7 A+
2. Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle -- 1/8 A-
3. Anchorman: Unrated -- 1/9 A
4. Comedian -- 1/10 B
5. Napoleon Dynamite -- 1/11 B

My reaction to watching Dynamite was the exact opposite reaction while I was watching Saw (Yes, they are two completely different movies, but you will see in a second). Going into this film, all I really knew about it, was that it was the cult phenomenon of the year that was supposed to be genuinely funny. For the first 45 minutes of the movie, I couldn't see why people would think this. It was bland, boring and most importantly, not funny. Then all of a sudden it takes a turn, and as I am writing this now, I can't remember at all when that happened. The movie just started to become alive and fire on all cylinders.

Now the reason why I am comparing it to Saw is because while I was watching that film the exact opposite experience happened. I thought the first 45 minutes were perfect. The story was interesting, the acting intense, and the contrapments by the villian are ingenious. Then it takes a turn from which it can never recover and it becomes a laughfest.

Luckily for Dynamite, it didn't continue on it's path of boredom. It turns out to be actually a very funny movie.

06. The Rounders - the movie has it's good sides, and as I like poker a lot, interesting 'theme', but overacting John Malkovic and that stupid character Edward Norton plays decreased my enjoyment of movie by lot. Without them movie would be quite good, so C- feel like a good grade now.

I liked it, but I found Damon to be much worse than Malkovich and Norton...B-ish for me ;)

For the sake of remembering the brilliant Starbucks quote, I might watch Best in Show tonight as #7.

Day 5: The Hot Chick - B-

Obviously a stupid film, but a funny one, none the less. One of my 'guilty pleasures' that I love to watch just for laughs. I wish Rachel McAdams was in it more though. Anna Faris has the tendancy to get on my nerves.

Wow! I didn't know anyone on this site hated Anchorman as much as I did. Although I gave it C- I still found it very awful.

I found the opposite. THe jokes felt flat to me, and it relied on stupid humor(which can be good) but for some reason didn't execute well with me. I love will farell, but this was a dissapointment in my book

*sigh* I think the hardest part about this challenge is picking the grading scale to use.

As for Napoleon Dynamite, I'm afraid to watch this movie again. The movie has been consistant in getting worse after every viewing, and that's not usually what happens for me. It's actually quite ridiculous how much loved this movie was in theaters, because it's really not that funny. This was way overhyped as something great, when it was really nothing but a quirky, unusual movie about a quirky, unusual guy named Napoleon Dynamite, and his adventures with his friend. Whoa! Exciting, isn't it?

Battleship Potemkin...best full length silent film l've seen (which isnt saying too much...it may be the only one l've seen). Fascinating. a bit hard to follow - l think it's cuz some of the dialogue is only on the screen for a few seconds, and l must've missed some...or something. but still, it's great. and some of the shots are just amazing for such an early film. the fast motion-esque pace of much of the scenes was especially great. B+

I think it's quite sad myself.

Yeah, but if you boil films down to their base they don't sound very interesting. Napoleon comes close to the people and experiences I've been exposed to in the past but overdramatises and overdoes them by bounds.

Overall, it's a fine little film with good acting (even though the point seems to be play it as non-emotional as possible) and nothing too melodramatic. Maybe more tomorrow on this.

I'm watching Bamboozled at the moment.

Great film with a great cast. Very funny. Even though some of the "punchlines" seem to be overused (such as focker), they always remain humorous.

Zing, congrats with remaking my thread. You're having a much better turnout than I did.

I hope it's not too late to join.

1/11 - A Rape In A Small Town (2004) - B

A documentary about a 80 year old woman who was raped. It's graphic and she has a very matter of fact way of describing the attack. How she talked about being raped anally following the first vaginal rape, is beyond belief.

1/11 - A Certain Kind of Death (2003) - B

Another documentary (thanks Sundance channel) about the hundreds of unclaimed bodies that are processed each year by the coroner's office. What set's this doc apart is that it follows the entire process from your neighbor's smelling something awful, to the juices that flow from your decaying body, to all the paperwork that follows. There are auctions for those deceased without family to claim belongings, cremations, and ultimately a mass burial of ashes by year for those unluckly souls.

Each dead body was found naked, usually near the bathroom or on the toliet. That's reason enough to commit and shack up. At least then, your significant other will put some pants on you so the coroners don't stare at your dead wang.

Note of caution, there is full dead nudity in this film. If the sight of an erect naked wang upsets and confuses you, do not watch this film. If you repeat that sentence in the voice of The Ladies Man from Saturday Night Live, it's quite funny.

Thanks! \:D/

And no, it's not too late. This one is slighty different so it's easier for people with school. You can either do the traditional "watch one movie a day for 30 days" deal, or atleast go for the "watch 30 movies within 30 days". That way, it's not required that you have to watch atleast one a day (though, that's what I'm aiming for). Hope you continue. \:D/

2005-01-12 Catwoman (1/10)

Top Gun:
The dialogue is total bollocks, the story is a laugh, but it is still a great ride. The flight scene are awesome and raise your adrenalin and it just gets you right in and doesn't leave you out of its claws before the credits roll. It's a guilty pleasure, sure, bur a fun one.

Catwoman:
Worst Movie of 2004. If Blackwell would do his worst dressed list for movie characters, Catwoman would top it. What a laugh. From the superhero abilties the character is somewhat comparable to Spider-Man but it totally pales if you see them side by side. Pitof takes no time for character development, the action scenes are boring and Pitof manages to make even Frances Conroy look like a bad actress. The whole movie plays out like a collection of music videos, sloppily edited and totally uninvolving (worst exampel: the basketball scene). This is an all-out catastrophy (no pun intended).

It's surprising. I always thought the story was pretty stupid (and actually, it was). However, that didn't stop the movie from being an entertaining action/thriller. Sure, it has it's plot holes. It also takes itself too seriously at times, but I found myself enjoying it from start to finish. It's not necessarily the best action movie, but it's sure much better than I thought it would be.
