I have to admit I was a bit disapointed by this.
Call me disturbed but by the way Eli Roth was selling it i expected more violence, what was there wasn't bad especially the hanging eye bit but the film really took a long time to get going with the first half having played like a soft porn movie of sorts.
Also i felt nothing for the characters so I didn't really care for them to much when the torture scene,s were occuring.
That been said the end was decent and considering the American censors are very harsh Im surprised it didn't get a NC-17 rating.
Overall passable but Roth still has a way to go to be as good as his Hero Tarantino.

I finally got around to seeing this movie.
I have read all the reviews in this post, but honestly I can't see the attraction to this film. I am a fan of horror movies. I love the classics NoTD, Dawn 78, TCM, NoESt, Baumer and I agree on LHotL. However this film seemed to miss somethiing. I don't know but one thing I have always liked about horror films is their ability to use shock and fear to make subtle commentary about things. I just felt this lacked anything that was coherent in those terms.
This movie had promise but it just fell apart. It starts off slow which I am OK with get to know the characters. However it never really got disconcerting. The violence while graphic was only really a step above the terminator movies with the only added emphasis on helplessness and this might really happen. It just never clicked. I did feel bad for the Japanese girls though.
To those who say they didn't have care about the characters. I agree but I don't think that should of been a problem wiht the film and it kind of goes back to my first point. If Roth had made a bunch of characters that you really despise and than have them go through such graphic scenes that no matter how you felt about the person no one sane would think that anyone should ever have to experience and pulled it off than I think this movie could of been an easy A. There was so much promise with this movie but it realy is just a D with little Pay off. I wouldn't even call it a horror film it wasnt scary.

As I said in another thread, this movie is just a poorly-done "homage" to a Takashi Miike film. It's pointless and never once thrilling at all. Eli Roth has potential to be a good horror director, but he certainly doesn't show it with Hostel.

Re: Hostel
So, I "finally" saw this movie when I was over at my cousins' a few days ago. It was pretty much what I expected since hearing about it from its release - a vile, horribly gross shlockfest. It was never scary, and I just spent most of the movie being repulsed. Seriously, the part where that girl's eye is hanging out? Like, the hell? And when he cuts it? I think I actually felt physically ill, it was completely gross. Ugh. Anyway. D+

Saw at least had a point and was somewhat interesting. This was just garbage that only a sadistic person would like or some horny kid for some of the breast shots.

Was on TV tonight. Absolutely disgusting...almost as disgusting as the people who like shit like this. And it even thinks it's intelligent commentary!
