Post This year's first contender: Atonement
After seeing it I am pretty sure Knightley is a top contender for Best Supporting Actress honors. Also James McAvoy could have a shot at Best Actor. Additional nominations for Make-Up, Cinematography, Editing (though I found it a bit confusing at times), Adapted Screenplay, Costumes and Art Direction are in the cards, quite possibly even Best Picture and Director. The women in the screening I attended absolutely adored the movie.

That's nice to hear. Two weeks until Venice!

So Keira is supporting not lead? Or will this be more like Kidman for The Hours?

Here's a full review that echoes my sentiment:

I like the whole "book within a book" aspect of Atonement and I am intrigued to see it filmed. The character Cecilia (played by Keira) is not the main character of the book, but is the subject of Briony's "atonement" that the latter carries from when she was 13 until in her 70's.

I had my eye on this right after the Oscars, but I've become weary since it apparently got appointed the status of Oscar frontrunner by followers of the race, so I wanted to hold off on anything until other people actually saw it. It appears to be the real deal, nice.

And like Xia said Keira will probably be put in Lead ala Kidman in The Hours.

Also, which Briony do you think stand the best shot: Ronan, Garai, or Redgrave?

Nice to hear another positive reaction.

A clip from the film has just been made available.

And there are a number of featurettes also:
Atonement
James McAvoy
Joe Wright
Keira Knightley
Dunkirk
Three Brionys

... all found on the IMDb board.

Some reviews I have read have Redgrave as a glorified cameo? :(

My most anticipated movie of the year as of now.

I really want to read the book before I see the film.

Well I think Away from Her/Once are the first contenders but...

The trailer doesnt really show much, but at least the performances look great.

I would put Keira in supporting. The female lead is Briony - problem is that she's played by three different actresses, so there's not really a female lead in the movie. Keira has a big role in the early part of the movie but then its focus shifts to McAvoy in the war and Briony in the hospital. They would be foolish to put Keira into the lead category IMO

Most impressive was Ronan, the biggest impact has Garai. Redgrave has maybe five minutes screentime. The best chance would probably have Garai, though I don't think any of them will be nominated. That's the problem when one role is cast with different actors.

Just found this on flickr. This is the amazing Dunkirk set in which the beach scene takes place that Empirew (rightfully) raved about.

You can PM me if you want to know something. The structure of the movie is very faithful to the structure of the book.

Daily Telegraph wrote:
Next Wednesday evening, the eyes of the entire film world will focus on English director Joe Wright. To the incessant flash of photographers' clicking cameras, he will stroll along a red carpet into the imposing Palazzo del Cinema in Venice and enter its auditorium, where the whole room will rise to applaud him. His new film Atonement, an adaptation of Ian McEwan's brilliant award-winning novel, has been chosen to open this year's Venice Film Festival. At 35, Wright is the youngest director to receive that accolade.

It will be an impossibly heady night, but the aftermath promises even more. Critics who have seen Atonement have reacted with breathless superlatives, and its showing at Venice and subsequent release will almost certainly catapult Wright into the ranks of world-class film directors.

Quote:
And Jason Solomons, in The Guardian, says the beach scene at Dunkirk could even be "the best single shot in British cinema."

He writes: "Wright introduces us to the carnage with a magnificent tracking shot that winds its way through a minefield of devastation. Wright's achievement in that shot, with his cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, sums up the whole film: brilliantly, elegantly simple.

Yeah, if it goes over well in Venice and Britain when it opens this just might become our first Picture lock. I can feel the race's simmer growing to a boil...
