Anyone who saw his role in "Alias" knows that Ricky can act outside of The Office. He was great on Alias, and I think he'll be great in M:I-3. A really great actor.

Who's this dude?
When I saw the thread title, I thought you were referring to the geeky guy from Big Bully (that Tom Arnold bomb), Little Shop of Horrors, and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!

In my opinion i dont find Ricky Gervais attempt at "playing it straight" humour at all funny. The defense seems to be "read between the lines" and take his humour as a satrical look at people who everyone makes fun of anyway. But yeah i didn't laugh once in "The Office" and instead found it all to be a bit akward and embarassing.
Plus, there was a "Making of Alias: Ricky Gervais Episode" on Bravo once, and he had to do alot of retakes because he wasnt taking it seriously and of course the dramatic stuff in the show required a straight face. That would definately be a problem on MI:3
Silly JJ Abrams...just because you love Ricky dosen't mean you have to cast him in a film that hes not suited for. However my faith in JJ Abrams keeps the hope alive, and im certain that MI3 will be the best in the series
