Post Hairspray's Oscar chance
94% and 7.7 average at RT, with 100% and 8.0 COTC. 81 at MC with 6 100s out of 36 reviews. Some are calling it better than Chicago and Dreamgirls.

By comparison:

Chicago - 87% (7.7) RT, 92% (8.1) COTC, 82 (12 100s) MC;
Dreamgirls - 78% (7.2) RT, 85% (7.4) COTC, 76 (5 100s) MC

The box office looks good. A possible comeback story again for John Travolta. Have other star-powers in Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Christopher Walken. Could lead in GG nominations as past musicals had. It also doesn't have the presumed front-runner burden as Dreamgirls had. In fact, it will be considered a pleasant surprise. So couldn't it be in contention for a lot of nominations at Oscar?

Hm, 6 or 7 seem good as of now. Who are you thinking will get the supporting nods? Travolta and Pfeiffer?

Yeah, but the reviews on Pfeiffer are a lot worse by comparison, so I think Travolta is the only acting possibility. A win over Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd) at GG would go a long way, although I wouldn't bet on it given Foreign Press' love to Depp.

I think it's a lock to get a makeup nod, but other than that...

Well Travolta deserves a nod for sure.

Ditto for Nikki Blonsky, and the set design was flawless deserves some love also.

Yup. New Line has found their contendor. A long way from a lock though as you would probably agree.

No Supporing Acress, no Sound Mixing maybe not Art Direction if it's really successful.

If this is successful, this could very much be the choice for the "people's film" which would ensure it had a certain level of popularity at the Oscars.

Xiayun is right in saying that this will be remembered big time at the Golden Globes where it is a lock for a nomination, and I wouldn't argue too much if people said it would probably win.

I see the Box Office threshold that this film has to reach something like $125m. What do you think Xiayun?

Gulli loved it, which scares me.

I liked it well enough, but major Oscars? Sounds like crazy talk. It's too frothy, too silly.

Need to watch Transformers Quickly to re-assert my manliness.

Folks, there's nothing inherently non-manly about musicals, no matter what your drunken grandfathers and subconscious gay panic want you to think.

You know who was a man? GENE KELLY. You know who else? FRANK SINATRA (in the fucking Mafia, dude!).*

*unfortunately, the YouTube has no clips of the Chairman of the Board prancing around in any of his MGM musicals

Oh but Gulli is gay on a regular basis.

Yoshue, don't go all mdana on us whenever we try out some humor.

Although Singin' in the Rain is pretty much the gayest movie ever.

I beleive I'm the uncomfortable closet gay man Yoshue is reffering to. Btw I was only joking Yoshue, you know a bit of light humour.

I had to endure my sisters taunting me with "told you so" when I ended up loving the film.

Curse you Adam Shankman!!

The real question is.

If people like Adam Shankman are salvageable directors.

What does this say about Tim Story?!?!?

Can he be saved?

Now thats just crazy talk.

Althou if you make the Silver Surfer spin-off a Musical it could be interesting in a car crash way.

Yeah, $125m looks good at this point. It's like Devil Wears Prada with better reviews, so I don't see it gross less with a better opening.

It could be in contention for...

Best Makeup
Best Art Direction
Best Sound Editing/Mixing (musicals seem to have a good chance in either of these categories)
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Supporting Actor

I think it might only nab Supporting Actor and Makeup

It should be pretty big at the Globes though!

I doubt Hairspray gets many, if any, nominations, but it's still a hugely successful venture. I probably won't get to see it until next weekend, though (tear).

Also, to those saying "Fucking musicals"? This movie has 94% at Rotten Tomatoes and just opened to nearly $30M, maybe you could try, you know, giving it a chance? Rather than flocking to see I Know Who Killed Me and the Halloween remake?
