The box office looks good. A possible comeback story again for John Travolta. Have other star-powers in Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Christopher Walken. Could lead in GG nominations as past musicals had. It also doesn't have the presumed front-runner burden as Dreamgirls had. In fact, it will be considered a pleasant surprise. So couldn't it be in contention for a lot of nominations at Oscar?

this is just a fun summer film, i doubt it will get much oscar buzz.

Yeah, but the reviews on Pfeiffer are a lot worse by comparison, so I think Travolta is the only acting possibility. A win over Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd) at GG would go a long way, although I wouldn't bet on it given Foreign Press' love to Depp.

I think it's a lock to get a makeup nod, but other than that...

If this is successful, this could very much be the choice for the "people's film" which would ensure it had a certain level of popularity at the Oscars.

Xiayun is right in saying that this will be remembered big time at the Golden Globes where it is a lock for a nomination, and I wouldn't argue too much if people said it would probably win.

I see the Box Office threshold that this film has to reach something like $125m. What do you think Xiayun?

I doubt Hairspray gets many, if any, nominations, but it's still a hugely successful venture. I probably won't get to see it until next weekend, though (tear).

Also, to those saying "Fucking musicals"? This movie has 94% at Rotten Tomatoes and just opened to nearly $30M, maybe you could try, you know, giving it a chance? Rather than flocking to see I Know Who Killed Me and the Halloween remake?
