Hm, that's odd. If it being pushed back to September, that'd be bad. However, that they're moving it [/i]up[/i] to September...odd.

Hmmm - well the same release date in previous years has given us some decent hits:

2005 - Excorsim of Emily Rose - $30m opening
2004 - Res Evil 2 - $23m opening
2003 - Once Upon a time in Mexico - $23m opening
2002 - Barbershop - $21m opening

But I dont know what it will mean for Yuma.

Really depends on if SHOOT 'EM UP can get buzz going at San Diego Comic Con or not, since that is far more along the lines of a September breakout (hyper violent genre fare) than 3:10 TO YUMA which is pretty much bound to open in the range of most modern Westerns, somewhere in the teens.

Of course it's possible SHOOT 'EM UP could go the other way and fall flat on its face.

SHOOT 'EM UP looks awesome. It looks total balls out action movie.

Yeah but IMO the trailer is weak. I think 3:10 to Yuma has a much better chance of being a big hit. If Open Range can open to 14 million in only 2,000 theaters I think that 3:10, with Russell Crowe + Christian Bale as a potent combination, can pull an opening over 20 million.

That's the Chan/Li film. Good idea to put this somewhere with low competition. This could do really well if both look at top of their games.

I heard the movie was going to be a kid's movie like Around the World in 80 days. That could be awful. I wish they would have went through something with at least a PG-13 Chan vs Li film. Had it been a full on action flick, it would have been a 100m potential movie. I guess not now due to the content

That does sound shitty.

Ruined such a potentially awesome flick. Not that I think it had $100m potential, but it probably would have made a solid $50-60m. I don't know about this.

Sunshine - July 20 (limited), July 27 (wide)
Trick 'r Treat - 2008

God, I hate them. Just when I thought I was seeing Sunshine next week. And also pissed about Trick 'r Treat getting pushed back.

Nooooo. Trick R Treat was the only horror pic I was looking forward to. Wonder what the rationale was? Maybe they wanted a Disturbia type release in April?

I wonder when in the heck they're thinking of releasing it in 2008, could they really be considering holding it to September/October of 2008?

There is a glut of horror in Early 2008.

I guess they could try opening it against Prince Caspian...

PROM NIGHT already has the PG-13 DISTURBIA niche date. Though they could probably still push it out 2 weeks later.

It's not like there was a massive amount of horror this October, and that was the perfect date. So yeah, way boneheaded of them.

Yes Prom Night should do well. Very strange indeed.

Actually somethings Fishy about this move.

Shocktillyoudrop.com Talked to Dougherty who tells us, "That'd be news to me. I'm still in Vancouver finishing the damn thing!"

Thought this would come maybe around October/November. But August is empty so maybe it could work.

Aiming for a Collateral-type run, perhaps.

Also, releasing a movie called Trick 'r Treat in a month other than October is beyond moronic.

Good call. Maybe people could accept Cruise in this role. I mean, he is trying to kill Hitler afterall in this movie. I highly doubt people are that stubborned that they would root for Hitler over Cruise.

Still think August lacks that one BIG hit though, and I still think Wolverine will be that film.

Personally Valkyrie is one of my most anticipated films. I think thats the perfect release date for it. Still summer - but late summer where more serious fair does well. I can see it doing better than Collateral - perhaps in the $120-$140m range.

I read somewhere that they are eager to get Wolverine out sooner rather than later and it could be fastracked ala X3 which isnt good - but if it does come out in 2008 - then August is the only place they can put it. Personally I think they should wait till 2009.

I like that date!!

The studio will be hoping the movie is a big hit due to that unique release date.

a standalone Wolverine movie will suck.

Why TRT is moving makes no sense, its release month is perfect..but alright. Halloween should move now to October, that would work I think. It's probably to late though.

I agree on Halloween should move to October now that there is an open date. I think it would be okay if it moved because there hasn't been a huge marketing push yet.

Monsters vs. Aliens moves up a week to May 15th, 2009.
Still is against Avatar in the 3D theater market.

I expect it to move again. That move really does nothing. Though with Narnia coming May 1st, Up coming in June, and IA3 coming in July, there's little room for it.

Maybe they should just go for a spring release?

09 is still a mess. Monsters has to move atleast 2 months away from Avatar. Narnia still should move etc.

Only good release dates so far are Avatar and Prnce of Persia.

The Nanny Diaries moves forward to August 24.

So its gone from a Spring to Fall to Summer opener. Its now up against War and Mr Bean's Holiday. I think its a decent move. Its second weekend will be padded by the Labour Day wknd and it doesnt have much direct competition.
