Variety finally caught on:

Quote:
"Transformers" has conquered China, opening with a boffo $5 million in its first two days.

Paramount's actioner set a record for a foreign language film on its opening day Wednesday with $2.95 million from 550 prints.

"Transformers" appears headed toward the same territory as the two other Hollywood tentpoles released in China earlier this summer -- Sony's "Spider-Man 3" with a Chinese cume of more than $18 million and BVI's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," which topped $15 million last weekend.

"Transformers" had racked up more than $120 million in foreign grosses by Thursday, led by $33 million in South Korea and $16 million in Australia.

Paramount's held off going into several major markets including the U.K., Japan, Germany and France for several more weeks.

Oh my.......The 2-Day gross alone has surpassed the opening weekends of movies like Da Vinci Code ($4.75m), ROTS ($3m). With another 3-Days to go....it think it should have no problems grossing another $2.8m to surpass SM3's $7.85m.....though it'll still need another $7.3m to surpass Curse Of The Golden Flower's ($12.3m).

I don't think it'll be able to outopen Curse of the Golden Flower....it'll probably fall around the $10-11.5m mark for the total 5-Days....still a huge cume..

Last time I checked, Transformers is not open in Hong Kong until 7/26 .

Right now, the market is dominated by HP5, which had a well-timed opening date to capitalize on the kickoff of schools' summer holiday there. HP5's second-day (a non-holiday) gross in Hong Kong was USD$404,884 with a PTA of USD$4,401.

18th day in release, Die Hard 4 (LFODH) held up well against it, grossing USD$46,272 with a PTA of USD$1,285.

On its 15th day of release, Shrek 3 was hit hard, making USD$24,422 with a PTA of USD$718. So far, even with the help of a holiday weekend debut two weeks ago, it has made only USD$2.42 million. Its box office run is considered mediocre compared with the other two threequels there (Spidey 3 made USD$7.20 million and Pirates 3 (still in release) made USD$5.35 million).

Planet Terror (the first feature of Grindhouse), Zodiac, and 2 Days in Paris did respectably well in their semi-wide to limited releases.

Of interesting note:

Children of Men, Notes on a Scandal, Stranger Than Ficton, The History Boys, The Marine, The Covenant, Hollywoodland, John Tucker Must Die, and Zoom all become all straight-to-DVD fares in Hong Kong. They either suffered from long-delayed theatrical release dates or were never picked up by the distributors.

Hey thanks so much for your Hong Kong reports....very detailed and extremely helpful....hope you can keep us all posted on HP's and Transformers performance there....

That'd be an all-timer. And will pass 100m RMB on Monday, its 6th day, another record. Who knows, maybe Titanic will have to sweat a little.

EDIT: Actually, according to sina, it probably already passed 100m by Sunday.

Pretty good hold for Transformers against Harry Potter....if we take out China (which is a record opening by the way, just a tiny bit above Curse of the GOlden Flower).....it's average drop is just under 50%.

DreamWorks/Paramount's Transformers had to make do with second place in the overseas arena, but still gave executives much to be happy with as it approached $150m. The action romp added $35.9m from 3,793 locations in 33 territories and currently stands at $146.4m, powered by an industry record opening in China of $12.6m from 300 venues.
It also opened in Israel on $249,000 from 30 sites, which was in line with the release last year of Mission: Impossible III. Playing strongly in its third weekend, Transformers added $5.7m from 440 screens and dropped 47% in South Korea for $38m, and added $3.2m from 460 sites in Russia after tumbling 56% in the second weekend for $12.1m.

The film overtook Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End in Malaysia to become the second biggest film ever as it added $550,000 from 61 screens and fell 50% for $4.2m.

===

Transformers Worldwide total has now reached $369.4m est.

This is slighjtly toungue and cheek from the folks at Dreamworks...........

------

http://www.variety.com/article/VR111796 ... id=13&cs=1

Many had predicted that “Transformers” would drop by more than 50% in its second frame. But the pic, directed by Michael Bay and based on the Hasbro toy line, more than held its own.

“It looks like we’re doing a little bit of our own wizardry,” DreamWorks spokesman Marvin Levy said.

Yep, I would say right now this is heading for a similar WW total as The Da Vinci Code, only that it'll have more domestically, but less overseas than that one. Nothing can beat The Da Vinci Code in Europe...

In the end, it will really come down to Japan. Right now, I'd say a $740-770 million WW total is in sight. Japan can bring it to $800+ million, though or have it drop to $720 million. All depends on it.

I'm still not exactly sure hwo this is tracking in the Domestic market.....on one hand people are saying just over $300m then some say it could beat Spiderman 3. For me, I think it's going to be towards the lower end of that spectrum....it might just edge out Pirates 3, but not Shrek 3.

International, it's already at $150m....meaning it would be at around $200m without those big markets yet to open.....$350m looks to be the minimum....with $400m more likely.

I'm going for $710-$740m.

No one can beat Da Vinci Code in Europe.....LOL, Pirates 3 comes to mind, and so will HP5, all the previous Potters and LOTRs....

What I meant were original, non-franchise/sequel films (basically anything non-Star Wars/Pirates/LOTR/HP). :) None can beat The Da Vinci code in that respect. For a non-sequel, its gross was humongous.

We're not talking adjusted figures here, though :)

Finding Nemo, hmm...it was a bit smaller overseas overall, I think and that despite a $100+ million gross in Japan which Da Vinci did not achieve, so I assume Europe helped it quite a bit. Nemo was bigger in Germany, France, UK, but Da Vinci prevailed in Russia, Poland, Italy, Spain...they were similar, yeah.

Well in local dollars, Nemo would be above Da Vinci Code....you can't get more consistent than Finding Nemo for a non-franchise non-sequel release.....

TAIPEI (TWD$) - Weekend 3

Impressive drop against the opening of Harry Potter......remember, it only drop 19% last weekend.....so this is brilliant. Some other movies drop more than 60% against Potter's opening.....so considering this, Transformers is holding very well.

It's already surpassed Spiderman 3 to become the 2nd largest movie of the year in Taipei. It will probably past AWE which has just crossed TWD150m. Transformers with these sorts of legs is looking at around 155-160m TWD....though it faces stiff compettiion next week in the form of Die Hard 4.

Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - 152,215,480 (11,407,570, -55.6%) - 21
Harry Potter 4: GOF - 142,135,595 (17,639,945, -32.4%) - 22
Transformers - 137,563,904 (11,836,028, -54.9%) - 19
Pirates Of The Caribbean 3: At World’s End - 134,750,965 (9,659,739, -55.8%) - 20
Kung Fu Hustle - 132,710,430 (8,225,405, -62.8%) - 19
Harry Potter 2: COS - 132,450,135 (16,565,160, -45.5%) - 19
Lord Of The Rings: TTT - 129,836,215 (10,984,550, -58.8%) - 18
Pirates Of The Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest - 129,396,746 (9,209,984, -53.5%) - 20
The Day After Tomorrow - 128,720,825 (16,333,090, -14%) - 18
The Da Vinci Code - 124,818,355 (8,380,237, -50.1%) - 20
Spiderman 2 - 121,022,130 (7,638,240, -58.6%) - 21
Spiderman 3 - 115,714,720 (9,409,935, -34.3%) - 19

It should have been out by now in India since most big movies do release within a 2-3 weeks. But since Transformers is huge in asia it should have released last weekend or atleast this week.

But even BOM has no signs of Transformers India release date.

You know there are already almost DVD quality bootleg copies for the movie available in India hence it could really kill its boxoffice there.
