AUSTRALIA - Opening Day

Potter opened today in Australia, a Wednesday opening....

It's currently 7:50pm at night and Potter is doing amazing business at night....selling out most showings from 4:30/5:30pm onwards.

NOt sure if this can beat FOTR's Wednesday Boxing Day opening day....however, it should easil beat Spiderman 2 for the #2 position...

Lord Of The Rings: FOTR - $4,122,770 (US$2.09m)
Spiderman 2 - $1,602,413 (US$1,105,341)
War Of The Worlds - $1,199,947 (US$923,057)
X-Men 2: X-Men United - $1,164,786
King Kong - $1,148,174 (Wed)
Monsters Inc - $1,032,860
The Passion Of The Christ - $637,424 (US$497,094)

Was also selling out a lot of daytime shows , Imax also has sellouts over next few days. it should be north of 3mill for the day

Hey, I know you....you post at moviemarshal right? , how did you find us here

I had a look again at Village Cinemas Melbourne and it basically sold out most of the night sessions.........yep definately $3m, with $4m a possibility.

This could well be the biggest non-LOTR/Reloaded opening day since ROTS (AUD$3.55m).

That is very cool. The Harry Potter series keeps improving in Australia. Australia and Latin America seems to be like Harry Potter's most surging markets. Each film has increased there. Should increase in China, Russia, and India as well.

In the last couple of weeks the US-$ lost some 3 % in value. That's like a christmas present for HARRY POTTER worth about $18m... ($600m+3 %=$618m)...

Does anyone know the exchange rate when HP4 opened?

The midnight shows for "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" brought in $12 million, the most for a Wednesday opening midnight run besting "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," which clocked in at around $8 million.
In terms of the full day, the record for the biggest Wednesday opening is held by "Spider-Man 2," which made $40.4 million. Warner Bros. has a shot at nearing that record with "Phoenix," which bowed on a monstrous 4,285 screens domestically.

The midnight take for the last film in the franchise, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," was $6 million, and that was on a Friday. Opening day take for "Goblet" was $40.1 million.

Overseas, opening day numbers for "Phoenix" in eight Pacific and Asian countries, including Australia, were also leaving Warner execs feeling magical.

Pic's estimated cume in those markets was $7.8 million. It was the biggest opening for any of the Potter pics in Australia, Korea, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Opening day take in Australia was an impressive $3 million, the fifth highest ever.

In Korea, "Phoenix" made $1.5 million, or 59% higher than the opening number for "Goblet."

Studio expected "Phoenix" to gross $5.5 million on its opening day in France.
Figures for France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Brazil will be available Thursday.

"Phoenix" reps the widest domestic and international opening in Warners' history. Studio dispatched 13,001 prints overseas.

So much for those not believing that it is going to explode at the OS box-office. $650+ million internationally, here we come!

This indicates that it'll likely open higher than any other Potter film in the majority of markets, though the legs....still undecided on them. Hopefully it can manage legs like the last two and not significantly worse.

Its already opening higher in every market so far. So at worse it will make like I said what GOF made plus inflation.

That's what we're hearing with almost every sequel, the end total could still be less.

With every sequel? That has been the case pretty much this year, Spiderman 3 comes to mind. Pirates 3 will probably be about what pirates 2 did. Also Potter has had a full year and half that is a lot of inflation. I think it will break 600 easily. I am thinking somewhere between 600-650 though I would guess 630.

Welcome to KJ RT.

Well no doubt its going to be HUGE out of the gate. But expect it to be more frontloaded than any of the other Potter films - especially with the book comin out next week.

I don't know about that. Realize only English speaking countries will be getting the book next week. Everywhere else will have to wait a while. France isn't getting their version for like another month or so. Of course other countries might buy it off Amazon. But I think the book won't hurt legs in Latin America, Russia, Eastern Europe or Asia because of that reason.

Really - I didnt know about the book having a staggered release pattern. Then it shouldnt be a problem in these countries. I think that will be more of a problem in the US.

As for Australia - Im almost convinced Potter will win the year. All it will have to do is beat out Shrek 3/Pirates which both should end in the $33m (AUD) range. Apart from Transformers (and the 7th book) it doesnt have all that much competition (but school holidays will generally be over).

Here are the total grosses of the last 4 films in OZ...

Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone : $42.3m
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets : $37.3m
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban : $33.1m
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire : $35.3m

So I think it can atleast get smack bang between Azkaban and Goblet which I think will be enough. Imax 3D should help big time.

I guess they do that because it is so hard to translate the books and also Rowling doesn't allow it to get sent out to so late they can't translate it in time to meet the July 21 deadline. As for Potter in Australia, hopefully it can beat GOF there. I woud say best case scenerio woudl be beating COS. I think it be hard to beat PS.

The opening in Australia is below FOTR, though above ROTS

1) ROTK
2) TTT
3) Reloaded
4) FOTR
5) Harry Potter 5 - ~AUD$3.75m (US$3m)
6) Star Wars 3 - AUD$3.55m

So huge results indeed...

POA's opening in UK is starting to come back to the fold....It looks like a $30m opening is now the standard for a mega hyped release....Shrek 3 did it, and HP5 based on the opening days so far will surely do it.

Huge yes, even more so when considering , 1,2,4 where Boxing day public hol releases, so while HP opened during School Vacations in several states(NSW/VIC bulk of result) it wasn't a national hol, 3-Reloaded opening day(Fri) did include large midnight results as did SW3, the opening day will wind up over 4mil but doubt will top FOTR (4.122mil, record Wed)

Harry Potter 5 conjures up $25.7m in initial day one openings

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix has amassed an estimated $25.7m worldwide since going on release at midnight on Tuesday [July 10] in North America and launching in eight territories yesterday [July 11].

The Warner Bros sequel grossed $12m in domestic theatres and set a new record for a midnight launch, overtaking The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King's $8m in 2003.

Harry and friends opened number one in each of the initial wave of 44 territories that will open this weekend through Warner Bros Pictures International (WBPI), and raced to an early $13.7m overseas tally. Combined with the domestic launch print count, this represents the studio's widest ever global opening.

The film grossed a sensational $5.9m from 920 prints in its first day in France, drawing 720,000 admissions in what has become the biggest opening for the franchise and the third biggest opening day in industry history.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix produced the biggest opening for the franchise in Australia, where it took $3m from 500 prints and 386,000 admissions for the industry's fourth or fifth biggest opening day. Franchise records also fell in South Korea, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Malaysia

Complete Wednesday figures for the openings in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Brazil will be available tomorrow.
