THe jokes from the Transformers themselves were funny as well.

Directed by action movie vet Michael Bay, Transformers delivers everything that is expected of it and ends up being one of the more enjoyable action films of the summer. It's big, expensive, goofy fun from beginning to end - boasting some of the most extraordinary action sequences on record. The final hour is the best - full of non-stop excitement and suspense. Shia LaBeouf delivers yet another charismatic and captivating performance, solidifying his presence as Hollywood's next big thing. Megan Fox does alright with the "love interest" role, Anthony Anderson and Bernie Mac are both funny in small roles and Rachael Taylor also gives a respectable performance. Josh Duhamel does what he can with an underdeveloped role, and Tyrese Gibson's character is completely pointless. Jon Voight is probably the worst, delivering an incredibly mediocre performance. But no one sees films of this sort for the performances - they are all about the spectacle, and in that department Bay delivers in full force. The special effects are extraordinary here, and the production value is amazing. There is also a great deal of humor that succeeds as well. Anyways, it's not a phenomenal film, but it's incredibly entertaining and is sure to make audiences everywhere cheer. The 2007 summer blockbuster crown still easily goes to Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End, however ;)

Recycled entertainment works! Combine some stereotypically funny characters with a generic main plot, stir them into a pool of mind-numbing non-stopping visuals, and you'll get Transformers.

Granted, Transformers has enough sitcom jokes and pop culture references to keep one entertained. But they add nothing to the main plot, that is, the robotic battle to find and keep the Cube --- the origin of all creative power. In fact, those hilarious moments reduce the importance of the main plot to a secondary status. I mean, the seriousness of the main plot and the lightheartedness of the characters do not fit together. Maybe that's why the concluding sequence with Optimus Prime providing voiceover felt so generic, pretentious, and tiresome to me. (But fortunately, the interview with Sam's parents during the credits was redeemingly funny.)

I dare Hollywood to make the main plot as funny and playful as the jokes. Perhaps an unprecedented deliberative anticlimactic ending would help a great deal.

Minus the triteness and seriousness of the main plot, Transformers would well deserve a solid B-.

Waaaay better than what I was expecting. The whole cast does extremely well, has a "real" feel to it. The movie made everything seem interesting, the only thing they didn't explain well was the Cube. Plus you never felt any real attachment to the robots besides Bumblebee. The movie was also freaking hilarious, had a nice sense of humor to it.

Grade: A-

BUT

I'D LIKE TO SMACK ALL OF YOU KJ'ERS WHO HAD VIDEO CLIPS OF ACTION SEQUENCES FROM TRANSFOMRERS AS THEIR AVATAR. WHY RUIN A MOVIE'S SURPRISES??? I FELT LIKE I HAD SEEN ALL OF THESE SHOTS BEFORE.

THANKS FOR RUINING A GOOD PORTION OF THE MOVIE

Freaking awesome! All the f/x were amazing. The lines that the Autobots had were great.
One of the best lines in the whole movie: "This is better than Armageddon!" by random fat guy filming the astroids.

I'm going to wager a guess that you've never actually read a script in your life.

I heard a script. It was witty. It had laughs. It had corny as hell lines. It accomplished everything I wanted.

Who the hell READS scripts? Producers? I am no producer, so why should I read the script.

Umm... I'm pretty sure everything that happens in the movie is the script.

Why would I need to read it if I saw/heard it all on the big screen?

You make no sense.

But anyways. Why must you come into a thread like this hate on me? Is it because your movie choices suck?

...because, for one, movies change incredibly from the script. Moreover, you just praised the plot of a movie that revolves around eBay product placement.

I didn't come into this thread to hate on anybody. I saw the comment and replied. Didn't notice it was you till after I saw the message on the board.

And you praise a movie based on a mediocre childrens book.

Saw Transformers tonight..........WOW, just WOW!

DId this movie ever stink! My jaw is aching from clinching my teeth at the dialogue to keep from howling or screaming.

I'm glad its over and I'll never have to watch it again. But I am very sorry I paid for this experience. Sheesh.

Won't walk the plank, indeed.

I must admit Transformers was actually quite enjoyable, I was expecting a shit storm and came out pleasantly surprised. The comedy for the most part worked, and the fx, well were just awesome. My two biggest gripes were the human element of the story which was just really pretty poor, and the action. I hate this quick cut style and endless close ups, sure it looks cool, but often it's hard to tell what's actually going on. But overall I enjoyed myself, but a sense that this could've been so much better in the hands of a more skilled director still remains. But whatever, we got Bay and he didn't do a bad job.

A very respectable

It's alright as mindless summer entertainment, but adding it to the ranks of the upper echelon of action cinema seems to be a bit premature. The creators seem well aware that the movie ought to be humorous, light-hearted (as far as mass destruction and doom and gloom go) and so in that sense it seems almost like a parody of itself (except Bay, who was no doubt giddy upon learning he had tens of millions of dollars to spend on more empty action sequences)... still, it doesn't leave one with the sentiment that they've just seen something great, something superior and lasting. Instead, it's just another action movie that's "elevated" by a series of elaborate special effects and (thankfully) tongue-in-cheek character interplay. The film is probably as good as it gets considering the concept and the commercialism driving the project.

**.5 / ****

Oh, and Shia LaBeouf was actually, well, charming and fun.

That's not so bad; I've waited for years for such a wonderfully "elevated" action film.

I believe the reason zennier put the word 'elevated' in quotation marks was different than your own...

Well despite the lure of the internet I managed to hold off on those inviting Transformers copies and stuck it out until the cinema release.

My verdict is this was a hugely enjoyable piece of "big screen" entertainment, and I'd emphasis the big screen part since I reckon the impact would be lessened on a smaller presentation.

Anyhoo what worked:

Its bloody hilarious in parts, especially in the first half. Shia proves himself a man of great comic timing and he's not left hung out to dry as he gets able support from all sides. Frenzy was one of the funniest little bastards I've ever seen, he's like a metallic Gremlin, I'd definetly have him around for a laugh and would try to ignore the whole firing sharp objects out of his belly deal. The funniest scene has to be the Autobots in Sam's yard, it borders on slapstick genius at points.

The Scorponok attack on the Iraqi village was quite possible one of the best filmed action sequences I have ever laid my eyes on. If I ever get a film made thats how I want all my action shots to look.

The SFX is indeed stunning to behold, some of the most seamless integration of CGI creatures into reality I've seen this side of the waterside attack in The Host.

The voice acting from all the Transformers was spot on. Cullen's gravelly tones perfect for the part.

Loved the soundtrack

What did or didn't work, more just observations:

The product placement didn't bother me, the Ebay part was integral to the movement of the story, anybody who complains about that needs to be slapped. Granted that little snippet with the Panasonic SD card almost fell into the realm of The Island level of product battering ram advertising but other it didn't bother me in the slightest, and honestly If somebody uses this as a reason to dislike the film they are rather nuts and to a point lying In my view.

Optimus Prime really made Bonecrusher his bitch!

What was with that brief scene with the President? Make the Bush bashing less odd in future lads.

They were smart in a way to turn some of the battles in the last 20 minutes into a juddering shaker of lunacy. I honestly don't think the CGI could survive lingering close battle shots no matter how good it was.

The speeches didn't bother me. I hated the Pearl Harbour, Armageddon monologues because of their Jingoistic undertones, these speeches were slightly cheesy but fine, althou why the hell were Prime and Megatron continuing with the verbal sparring while in battle? Its a fight lads, less talk talk more bash bash.

This film like I said needs a big screen for full effect. Anybody who watched this on a computer monitor is just kidding themselves

What didn't work:

John Voights character is rather dumb, and that Level 7 character was plain idiotic.

Megan Fox didn't serve any real useful purpose beyond eye candy.

Overall I was pleased with the end product, and am glad at least one summer blockbuster delivered the big budget entertainment I've been craving all summer.

As for a grade, well it might fall slightly on a smaller screen but for the moment.
