Just read some Chinese articles at sina, and the midnight sales were out-pacing POTC3 by 2-3 times. Some records are likely to be broken. It's certainly expected to surpass SM3.

Pretty much a lock as it has the whole month by itself. The WOM is pretty similar to here too.

100 million in japan would really give it a massive overseas gross.

Yeah, i hope Japan digs Transformers, would give it a huge OS boost. I'd be happy with anything over $80m.

Reminiscent of Italy, Transformers is not at uber-blockbuter levels. It was actually down on estimates by almost $500k.

Another big(ger) European market disappointing. :(

Well it's better than the first Spiderman's opening :shades: The sequel will do better i'm sure...

I am guessing Europeans are waiting for HP5 hence not uber blockbuster type money in Europe.

Also I am very surprised by LFODH european performance which has been pretty damn good even with competetion from Transformers.

I am really worried about Transformers boxoffice in UK. The movie is releasing against The Simpsons movie and will have two movies LFODH and Shrek 3 that will still be making some good money.

Die Hard 4 really hasn't flopped in any market, it's performing at or above expectations in most markets...a tough competitor for Transformers in Asia....

That's bloody fantastic, Spiderman 3 holds the record in Chian, and this looks to blow past even that.....$20m? who knows, :hahaha:

If it does $100m Japan, it's chances of getting to $400m is very good indeed......

Wow, that's just fucking awesome! It wouLd just be behind SM3's 9+m totaL in the end which I think is the biggest EVER here. HP5 though, is going to sLaughter it from Wednesday onwards.

Yeah, it's probably already inside the Top 5 or something in USD$.....should finish second behind Spiderman 3 unless it manages to contain potter and surpass SM3...

So far it is a major hit in almost every single asian market, breaking records and registering superb holds for this type of movie.

I don't think it'll falter in Japan like King Kong.

That South Korea hold was jaw-dropping.

The midnight gross in China exceeded SM3 and even Curse of the Golden Flower in some areas. The opening week is now expected to pass 100m RMB, which would be $12-13m. $30m looks quite possible.

Also a 2.5-meter high Megatron toy was sold for $15K in an auction ceremony in Beijing.

Yeah, South Korea is loving this.......in just 2 weekends (4.2m admissions), it is already the 3rd largest for the year behind SM3 and Pirates 3 both at 4.9m admissions

Should surpass both of them by weekend 4.

Transformers broke the all-time opening day record in China (in Chinese). 22.41m RMD, or roughly $2.95m. The old record was SM3's 17.26m and that was on May Day holiday week, while Curse of the Golden Flower had 15m the opening day last December.

Curse Of The Golden Flower - $1.9m (5 hrs)
Hero - $1.3m (RMB10M)

Another 16m RMB on Thursday (-29%) for a two-day total of 38m ($5m), and on pace to pass 100m over the 5 days.

Last time I checked, Transformers is not open in Hong Kong until 7/26 .

Right now, the market is dominated by HP5, which had a well-timed opening date to capitalize on the kickoff of schools' summer holiday there. HP5's second-day (a non-holiday) gross in Hong Kong was USD$404,884 with a PTA of USD$4,401.

18th day in release, Die Hard 4 (LFODH) held up well against it, grossing USD$46,272 with a PTA of USD$1,285.

On its 15th day of release, Shrek 3 was hit hard, making USD$24,422 with a PTA of USD$718. So far, even with the help of a holiday weekend debut two weeks ago, it has made only USD$2.42 million. Its box office run is considered mediocre compared with the other two threequels there (Spidey 3 made USD$7.20 million and Pirates 3 (still in release) made USD$5.35 million).

Planet Terror (the first feature of Grindhouse), Zodiac, and 2 Days in Paris did respectably well in their semi-wide to limited releases.

Of interesting note:

Children of Men, Notes on a Scandal, Stranger Than Ficton, The History Boys, The Marine, The Covenant, Hollywoodland, John Tucker Must Die, and Zoom all become all straight-to-DVD fares in Hong Kong. They either suffered from long-delayed theatrical release dates or were never picked up by the distributors.
