 The Iron Giant
The Iron Giant Quote: The Iron Giant is a 1999 animated science fiction film produced by Warner Bros. Animation, based on the 1968 novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. Brad Bird directed the film, which stars a voice cast of Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick, Jr., Vin Diesel, Eli Marienthal, Christopher McDonald and John Mahoney. The film tells the story of a lonely boy named Hogarth raised by his widowed mother, discovering a giant iron man who fell from space. Hogarth, with the help of a beatnik named Dean, has to stop the U.S. military and a federal agent from finding and destroying the Giant. The Iron Giant takes place during the height of the Cold War (1957).
Development phase for the film started around 1994, though the project finally started taking root once Bird signed on as director, and Bird's hiring of Tim McCanlies to write the screenplay in 1996. The script was given approval by Ted Hughes, author of the original novel, and production struggled through difficulties (Bird even enlisted the aid of a group of students from CalArts). The Iron Giant was released with high critical praise (scoring a 97 percent approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes), when released by Warner Bros. in the summer of 1999. It was nominated for awards that most notably included the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and the Nebula Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.

Funny, visually striking, and surprisingly touching.
My most favoritest of all animated films.

"Su-per-man."
Watching this and Ratatouille in a 4.5 hour span kinda confirms for me Brad Bird's demigod status in the animation world at the moment. Hell, he's pretty much a demigod among all filmmakers at the moment.

Brad Bird is a genius.
He made the best Simpsons episode in "Krusty Gets Busted"
He did the best animated film period in The Incredibles
Then he did this, the most underrated animated film ever.

From what I remember, the animation doesn't reach the levels of many other Disney flicks and it's not that funny, but the very touching and solid plot compensates those flaws. It really surprised me the first time I saw it, years ago.
B+ or 8.5/10

Amazing movie, I like the animation a lot but it is really just a delivery mechanism for a wonderful story with great characters.
I have young children and this is one of our favorites. (that is saying a lot, we watch and love tons of movies)

I first became aware of Brad Bird when he did the "Family Dog" episode of Spielberg's Amazing Stories or whatever it was called. I have yet to see anything he has made that wasn't great! Incredibles is one of my favorite films ever.

This is the first movie I ever remember crying in. I clearly remember me being upstairs in my room around 9:30 at night watching this and all of a sudden I just start sobbing extremely loud. My mother comes running upstairs and she yells "what's wrong?!" and I cry even harder and say "The Iron Giant died!!!"
Pathetic, yes but I was young. I still love this movie. It's one of my favorite animated films.
9/10 (A)

A wonderful, heartfelt film. I loved it. If only Transformers had as much feeling.

I'm not as estatic about it as I am Ratatouille, but yes, it's very good. Bird's animation has perfect fluidity and motion as always, great non-verbal comedy. I actually preferred the first half of the film much more than the second, all the stuff with the army and the bomb felt like a bit too much, I loved the simplicity of first finding the giant.

 Re: The Iron Giant
It's more of a step up to Bird's later stuff (still haven't seen Ratatouille, though) then a full-out masterpiece right out of the gate, but it's pretty great. Hilarious at times and heart-warming the rest of the time. Bird's script, with all the Cold War paranoia and sci-fi references, is pitch-perfect, and the animation is as good as it gets for hand-drawn. The film is far too short, though, and as a result the characters are short-changed. Even Hogarth isn't really as filled out as he could have been. Still, it's incredibly emotional with some great voice work and enough funny to go around. A real treat.

 Re: The Iron Giant
Not much more can be said that hasn't already. I loved the story. A mysterious giant falls from the sky. It eats metal. Makes plenty of sense. An estranged little boy looking for a friend does not care why the giant fell. He just knows that the giant might be a good soul. When he is in danger early in the movie, he doesn't know or care about his intentions. He knows that he is in trouble and reacts accordingly. And it turns out that the giant WAS bad - and pretty badass, I might add. But it was the influence of a small lonely child to deter him - and his soul. The movie is incredibly simple, but it says volumes. The movie is a bit short, so the characters seem a bit flat or cut-and-paste, but I was still connected to them. The animation was quite breathtaking, and the best that I've seen in terms of the traditional 2-D style.
"Superman....."
A high A
