Quote:
The Hole is a 2001 psychological thriller film directed by Nick Hamm, based on the novel After the Hole by Guy Burt.

The film starred Thora Birch, whose headlining credit and highly-publicized seven-figure salary was attributed to her appearance in American Beauty. It also featured Keira Knightley, in her first significant role in a feature film.

The film premiered in the United Kingdom in April 2001. Dimension Films, which in October 2001 acquired the rights to distribute the film theatrically in the United States, never did so; it was instead released direct-to-video nearly two years later, by Dimension's then-fellow Disney subsidiary Buena Vista Distribution. The film was shot largely in and around Downside School, in Somerset, UK and some scenes at Reading Blue Coat School in Reading, UK.

A very well done Thriller. All of the performances were great, especially Thora Birch. It's really shame she isn't getting more work. The twist towards the end was unpredictable, and I certainly wasn't expecting it. It's a really creepy, and sadistic movie. I bought it on dvd, and I love it. The score is also very eerie.

I love the movie. I've seen it many times. I saw it way back when it wasn't even released in America yet, it's a great movie. I haven't watched it in awhile though, this thread is making me want to watch it, maybe I will sometime. I do own it :)

8/10 (A-)

Good concept, but definitely not well-explored. This movie gets the credit of introducing Keria Knightley to broader audiences, but it's Thora Birch's performance that stands out the most. The scenes in the bunker are all interesting to follow, but all the scenes outside of it are rather dull and lack the necessary impact. The movie's biggest flaw is its predictability. I could figure out the ending once I read the premise for the movie. Now that is what I call really predictable. It's a good attempt at a psychological horror study, but unfortunately it's only a partial success.

Don't be afraid to go in: The Hole

Quite nicely done with a Rashomon-like story structure that was itself the source of the horror. Its true - those Brits don't need to hide some hokey monster underground to give you a fright (excepting of course, Five Million Miles to Earth with that subway dig) Plus, Thora Birch very good here (not naked of course, not being male).
Nobody at the theatre though - people will climb over each other to get into lame American horror movies, but won't search out something interesting like The Hole.

4 out of 5.

This is definitely one of my favorite horror/thrillers and one of the most underrated movies ever. It deserved to get a theatrical release in the U.S. It is so intense, well-made and quietly terrifying. It relies on real suspense and tension rather than excessive gore and cheap thrills, and by the end it is so haunting that it is almost hard to take. Thora Birch and Keira Knightley both deliver great performances. HIGHLY recommended.
