What Lies Beneath
What Lies BeneathQuote: What Lies Beneath is a 2000 American supernatural horror-thriller film directed by Robert Zemeckis. It stars veteran actors Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer as a well-to-do couple who experience a strange haunting that uncovers secrets about their past.
The film is deliberately Hitchcockian in style. Pfeiffer's blonde female protagonist is reminiscent of former Hitchcock blondes; Grace Kelly, Kim Novak and Tippi Hedren, while Ford's duplicitous antagonist recalls Joseph Cotten in Shadow of a Doubt, Claude Rains in Notorious and Anthony Franciosa in Tenebre. Characters, plot developments and various elements pay homage to Rear Window, Vertigo, Spellbound, Rebecca and Psycho. The Hindi film Raaz is an unofficial adaptation of this film.

Very disappointing considering all the talent involved. It was predictable from beginning to the end. The performances were fine all-around, but except for one scene, the movie lacked solid scares and jump scenes and the storytelling wasn't original either.

I loved this movie.
Played more like Hitchcock horror then anything. I found the jumping scenes very effective, and not corny, and the film had a good creepiness to it. Ford and Pheifer were great. Ford was awesome in the final third of the film.

Hated it, but haven't watched it since it was first in theatres. I just remember the scares being cheap.

I saw it when it first came out and don't remember a thing about it -- except that Michelle P. was in it.

Re: What Lies Beneath
I rewatched it some weeks ago. My grade is down to B-/C+ now. It's a Hitchcock wannabe, definitely the worst work by Zemeckis so far, I usually love most of his stuff.

Real comment made in 2000, while waiting for the malfunctioning projector to return to Nutty Professor 2:
"Hey, if I wanted to watch nothing happen for two hours, I'd go see What Lies Beneath again!"

I'd had seven years now, but I'm not sure I've fully recovered. As for the rampage, I'm bored. But I'm glad I'm doing it...some poor soul requested Aguirre the Wrath of God, but then never commented! How could they?

Re: What Lies Beneath
I dunno, I enjoy it. I think it has a great atmosphere... until the godawful ending.

Re: What Lies Beneath
This was on TCM last night (not sure why, I found it a bit odd) but I watched it. I haven't seen it in years but I remembered loving it when I was younger. Still love it. Intense, entertaining and the performances are great.

I'd have to watch it again, but I remember walking out afterwards being quite disappointed. I expected more.

Re: What Lies Beneath
Saw it twice theatrically and several times on video. LOVED it! It was smart, scary, and well-acted. Haven't seen it in years, but it's an awesome thriller.

Re: What Lies Beneath
I’m glad I forgot all the marketing for this movie cause I really wasn’t sure what Ford was up to until they revealed the original ghost was actually alive. I got a little bored in the middle waiting for the axe to fall, but the first and last acts of this film are very good.
