Shame. Guess that means No Country For Old Men wasn't quite the return to form everyone's been saying. Or that the Cannes voters don't like awarding people whose names are easy to spell.

Judging by the final list of winners, I'm thinking it's the latter.

They have always been a Cannes favorite, winning Golden Palm once and Best Director three times, and No Country for Old Men got rave reviews, so a lot of people were expecting it to split Picture/Director with 4 Years, 3 Months, and 2 Days.

I don't think they ever like to award what was expected. 4 Months... was getting raves and buzz for possibly the Grand Prix, but never for the Palme D'Or.

That said, I doubt any of these films will have much of any of an impact come awards time.

Why are we expecting American films to win in France?

Is that cynical? ;)

No but really... this is some of the best that the world's got this year (supposedly), being that No Country for Old Men was one of the only American films in competition, it doesn't necessarily torpedo it's chances of doing well in the US awards race.

A History of Violence was snubbed by the Jury in 2005, but went on to become the only film from that competition to get any Oscar noms. And Mystic River didn't anything even though everyone was hailing that as a return to form for Eastwood. So yeah, it doesn't have much of a negative effect at all.

Well... in the last 11 years none of the BP nominees match any of the Cannes winners except The Pianist (2002) and Secrets & Lies (1996).
