Sam Nasty wrote: you know, guys, I'm reading up on the comic book stories of Venom and Sandman and they're not that off from the movie. So I'm kinda thinking of giving Raimi a little slack. While still a mess of a movie, the story lines themselves do come from th comics. A little bit from wikipedia about Sandman: Quote: Marko becomes deeply depressed, and the Thing of the Fantastic Four supports him, and encourages him to use his power in the name of good. Sandman then makes sporadic appearances in various Spider-Man comics, assisting his former enemy.
Morally, Sandman is a complex character. Throughout his criminal career, he possessed an affinity for his ailing mother. He reformed and joined the superhero group the Avengers and the Wild Pack of Silver Sable. He has since returned to a life of crime but resists the extreme methods and actions of typical supervillains, rarely killing anyone. i think if we read up on the comics, the movie may make more sense.
NO!!!! Really???? Read up on the comics and it would make more sense??? I've been saying that for how long now?? Bottom line is that the mainstream audience is loving this over the nitpciky fanbase..

I've never read the comics so i really dont know much about the villains or gwen stacy and all that bullcrap people have been bitchin about. To say i was hugely disappointed with the film would be an understatement.
I'm just going to give a rundown real quick of my likes and dislikes
The action was not very good. There were tons of action scenes but they were boring and i didnt think looked that cool. The acting was pretty bad. Dunst did decent but Tobey seemed to cash it in. Franco did surprisingly well, Church did well and Grace did very well. The villains were awful. The Sandman was boring and pointless, and Venom showed 10 minutes worth of screen time, come on now honestly? He is supposed to be one of Spidey's biggest nemesis' from what i hear and this is all he gets. And then he dies in the most pathetic way possible. Ridiculous The F/X was good. The comedy worked well. I did like Emo Spidey until that annoying dance number.
I really felt the film should have been split into 2 films. If you're going to do venom, end the movie at the bell tower scene and have a different villain for #3 because sandman was just awful.
Overall i know its a mostly negative review but i still give it
B. Gee?? A negative review with a good grade like a "B"..
if i submitted by review to rottentomatoes it would be a fresh rating but you dont seem to understand. 1 and 2 i feel are the best superhero films made. I've never read any comics so i dont have a favorite superhero. These first 2 films were so perfect that i had high expectations for the third. Unfortunately, the third film disappointed me. It was still a fun film and a good way to spend 2 hours but it was no way near as good as the first two. That's why i mostly brought up negative points.

Spiderman 3
Harkins Theateres
Soldout
Trailers-
Rush Hour 3: crowd enjoyed. I'm looking forward to it.
POTC3: " "
FF2: Looks good to me but the voice of the surfer at the end was disturbing in a bad way.
Across the Universe: trailer shouldn't have been attached to S3. I found it somewhat interesting.
Some Peguin Film: bleh...penguins are so Over
I was looking over the grades and they seem pretty valid. Even an F would be valid for a film like this because it really was all over the freaking place. I wasn't expecting to be disappointed by S3 but as it was nearing it's conclusion I began thinking, "when is this gonna end..." and that is Never a good sign for any film when I start to wonder that.
The film was obviously too long and I think had a bloated script with a lot of really unncessary scenes. For example, how many dang times do we need to see a crowd of multi ethnic facings cheering/clapping for Spiderman? We get it, the city loves him but enough already.
Also, the direction and some of the dialogue choices were simply out of this world. The audience I was with flat out laughed at a few of the scenes. For example, when MJ asks if someone would bop her in the head and he goes, "Bop" or when Peter began crumbling like a baby when MJ was being forced to dump him. None of that worked and the scene feel flat. Btw, the audience I was with did get into the whole love triangle issue but I think it ended up coming across as Jerry Springer-ish. I felt the direction of the movie was veering off into total surrealism and becoming a joke, but it gets worse.
The final fight with Sandman (who had a fake death, one of three I can recall in the film) and Venom. The whole fight was underwhelming and ridiculous. I don't think they should have ever brought this Sandman toon to the screen. His backstory was nice and interesting actually but his ability and how it comes across on film is Sick and Ridiculous. His toon was just like the giant marshmallow man from Ghostbusters. Total Nonsense! Then we have Venom whom I think also should never have been put to screen. The screeching sound was stupid and highly annoying and the facial interpretation was poorly done and the teeth was junk as well. It was sad and pitiful. Also, the predictability in the film was just too much to take. Yet ANOTHER thing I hated was the whole news reporter sequence at the final fight. What the hell was that done for? And...Gwen...purpose please>?? Eddie Brock?? Purpose...there was no purpose for these characters. They weren't even interesting or worth caring about nor were we given hardly any backstory about them. Pointless.
After All that I didn't totally hate the film and wasn't completely disappointed but I was disappointed with how the film turned out and how it was made and the story used. All of which were sub par and don't even come Close...Anywhere Close to matching the first and second films. As for the box office, It'll obviously suck up lots of dough these two weekends it has but it's going to have some very big drops. I'm talking AOTC style and that's just my opinion but it was that underwhelming and I wouldn't recommend the film to anyone lest you look forward to being disappointed at the end.
Grade - B

This film is a fucking train wreck. Worse than Fantastic Four, on par with Catwoman.
The only redeeming piece of this film is Harry Osborn's arc, although it was strained (amnesia? bullshit).
How this can even pass for "entertainment" is beyond me, the film is boring. The cooincidences? Peter Parker's semi-hot lab partner is shooting a modeling commercial in a random downtown building when disaster strikes, she's the only one in danger, so her father (who's the police cheif and will later tell Peter, separately, about Marko) shows up without knowing his daughter is there, and also her semi-boyfriend shows up right next to her father. The scene ends with a thrilling fall through CG building parts, which is fine, except that once Spidey saves Gwen the scene ends and it's off to the next unrelated plot point.
Or the fucking Butler. The fucking Butler.
Or how about the fact that a molecular destabalizer is...
- Somewhere in a field in the middle of the city
- Behind one chain fense with (apparently missing barbwire)
- Open air hole in the ground with no railings or warnings or whatever
- Being run in the middle of the fucking night
- Being run in the middle of the night by lab technicians who look like models
- The police run up after the device does it's thing and just point down
- What, there are no cameras so the scientists can see what's going on?
Here's a better idea... have Marko run into a facility in the middle of the city, see some young lab tech, take him hostage, tussle with the police, get locked inside a room where wacky experiments happen and then a power surge triggers the magic. FAR BETTER AND IT ONLY TOOK ME THREE MINUTES.
Fucking movie. Spider-Man 2 was not as good, and I have biases as I hated the first two, but this is awful, awful shit.
The whole "people who didn't like Spider-Man 1 & 2 will like this one better" is a bold faced fucking lie.

Where's dingaling's review? I want to see if even he hated it. That'll be a be true test to how epic-ly bad this movie is.

Why do you continue to make statements about it being so mouth gappingly bad when you gave it a C-, lower grade if your just going to constantly rag on the film.

C- is pretty low for most on KJ, they tend to grade generously.

I bet he gives it an "It's not THAT bad" B grade at first that decreases over time to a C or C+. Of course, now that I've said that he'll give it a D or something.
Anyway, 5 days, 10 pages, 8 of which have been created over the last 24 hours. Fastest growing review thread ever?

On what board?
Superhero Hype... a lot hate it.
Chud... most hate it.
Aint it Cool... hates it.
RT forums... most hate it.
Audience I was with didn't have reaction to it.
Radio gave it bad reviews
TV it's getting bad reviews.
The barely fresh RT rating is probably the best thing this film has going for it at the moment, and that's frightening.

Its easier to talk about a movie when its shite.
I'm actually thinking my D+ grade was to generous.

What can I say, I'm a man vocal about my hate
I give it a C- because it wasn't painful to watch, it was a somewhat entertaining way to spend 2 hours on a Fri. night. I generally give D-F range if I have a "Why the fuck am I here?" feeling while in the theatre, and I didn't really have that in SM3. But for the most part, it's a failure, and it gets worse thinking about it... nothing in the movie makes any sense at all.

No, not really... The coincidences... The random occurences put in there only to move forward the plot... The characters doing things completley out of sync with themselves... the holes... Raimi lost his marbles when it came to logic
