Nice list, so far. Lots of stuff I will eventually see, (though unfortunately, not a ton is currently "must see") and I like what I have. It's a pretty unique (unconventional even) list...I mean, they're mostly well regarded films, and all that, but not ones I tend to hear much of as 'favorites'. Gud job. :o

You know, I think I'm going to hold off on my list a little bit longer. There are a few films I want to see before I make my final list. I mean, I went back and watched one of the films on my list and realized that I liked it a lot more than how I ranked it. So because of that, Chip can go ahead of me and anyone else who wants to sign up. I'll do this eventually, just not right now.

Diverse is the right word. I mean, mixing Face/Off with Les Diaboliques (which I still need to see, along with half of your list, lol)?
Only you to make me feel I still need some major catch up to do, Price

50. The Brotherhood of the Wolf (Christophe Gans - 2001)
Throw a monster movie, a mystery thriller, a period piece and even a little bit of 'kung-fu' and watch it all mix into a perfect cinematic meal. And Monica Bellucci in a corset too.

49. Imitation of Life (Douglas Sirk - 1959)
Call it a chick flick if you want, but Douglas Sirk was the master of the melodrama. I like most of his movies (Magnificent Obsession, All that Heaven Allows, etc.) but this one is the ultimate tearjerker. Check out 'Far from Heaven' (2002) from Todd Haynes to see an homage to the movies of Sirk.

48. Rosemary's Baby (Roman Polanski - 1968)
The perfect example of what I call atmospheric horror. No need to show blood and gore. It's the impending sense that something that is wrong or evil will soon happen and it's unavoidable what creates the unease in the spectator. Check also The Tenant, for another atmospheric mystery tale from Polanski.

47. Dead of Night (Chrichton/Cavalcanti/Dearden/Hamer - 1945)
The mother of the short story horror/mystery collection movies. What was later made popular by studios like Hammer or Amicus found its birth here.
One of the segments is treated with humor and it's rather forgettable, but the other segments are very good, with the one with Michael Redgrave called Ventriloquist Dummy a real creepy standout.
Forget the dummies in Magic or Dead Silence, this is where it all started.

45. High and Low (Akira Kurosawa - 1963)
Tense thriller about the kidnapping of the son of a wealthy business man...or so it seems. Filled with as many twists as hard decisions that the main character has to take, I can assure you that if you liked 'Ransom' you will also enjoy this one.

44. On the Beach (Stanley Kramer - 1959)
A different kind of submarine movie. Downbeat drama about the end of mankind and the unavoidable realization that life is going to disappear from the face of the earth. Sad movie.

43. Paths of Glory (Stanley Kubrick - 1957)
Forget 2001, Shining, Clockwork Orange. This remains Kubrick's best movie. Why? Because I say so.

42. Saving Private Ryan (Steven Spielberg - 1998)
The closest attempt of trying to recreate being in a battle, and it succeeds as good as a movie can. Some people criticize the midpart of the movie, but I have never had a problem with it, giving some time to best know the characters.

41. Kill Bill 1&2 (Quentin Tarantino - 2003/2004)
I consider Kill Bill 1 and 2 as one movie, as it was the way that was filmed and initially it was to be shown as a 3+ hour movie. (Unlike LOTR, which was also filmed complete, but was always intended to be shown in 3 parts).
Tarantino shows his love for the B-movie genre, with many references to the Kung-Fu & Shaolin Shaw Brothers movies of the 70s (Sonny Chiba, Gordon Liu). And let's not forget the soundtrack selection too, with mentions to Bernard Herrmann and the Italian spaghetti western of the 60s.
All genres that I do love.

40. The African Queen (John Huston - 1951)
See Bogart in his Oscar winning role. An absolute delight of a movie seeing these two movie legends sharing the screen for the first and only time.

39. Crimson Tide (Tony Scott - 1995)
Never has Tony Scott been as good as director as in this movie. Two powerhouse performances by Washington and Hackman in a very tense 'will they press the button or not' thriller.

38. Casino (Martin Scorsese - 1995)
Many people prefer Goodfellas, but for me this is the best of the Scorsese movies dealing with the Mafia or the syndicated crime. Amazing camerawork shows a master at work. That large camera shot showing how money is 'cleaned' is pure gold. De Niro, Stone, Pesci and Woods are superb. And the selection of Oldies in the soundtrack is great too.

37. Charade (Stanley Donen - 1963)
Hitcockian thriller but filmed with charme and glamour and romance and comedy. Grant and Hepburn are a delight to watch, but look at the list of supporting actors: James Coburn, George Kennedy and Walter Matthau.
It will keep you guessing until the very end. 'Remade' as 'The Truth about Charlie', but losing all the charm of the original.

36. Sleuth (Joseph L. Mankiewicz - 1972)
Just two actors in the whole movie and still of one the best thrillers of all time. Recommended for fans of mystery and riddles. Expect the unexpected. To be remade next year by Kenneth Brannagh with Jude Law and Michael Caine again, but this time with Caine playing the Olivier role. I doubt it will be as good as this one.

35. Marathon Man (John Schlesinger - 1976)
-Is it safe?... Is it safe?
You're talking to me?
-Is it safe?
Is what safe?
-Is it safe?
I don't know what you mean. I can't tell you something's safe or not, unless I know specifically what you're talking about.
-Is it safe?
Tell me what the "it" refers to.
-Is it safe?
Yes, it's safe, it's very safe, it's so safe you wouldn't believe it.
-Is it safe?
No. It's not safe, it's... very dangerous, be careful.
The ones who have seen the movie know what this scene is about . For the ones who haven't seen it, watch it to find out, unless you don't like dentists....

34. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (Sergio Leone - 1966)
Watch this movie and learn why movies should always be shown in their original aspect ratio and the world needs to get rid of fullscreen versions. A visual and acoustic classic.

33. Scarface (Brian DePalma - 1983)
A powerhouse performance by Pacino and a throw everything and the kitchen sink approach to excess makes this tale of the rise of a cuban mariel exiliate to drug lord one of the modern crime classics.
