Post Actors/Actresses overdue for an Oscar
We all know that there are many many amazing actors and actresses out there who are long overdue for an Academy Award, but still fail to get one. Last year, one of them, Sean Penn was finally awarded. This year, it looks to be Cate Blanchett who'll finally receive the well-deserved award.

What actors and actresses do you think are rellay overdue for an Oscar?

Personally, this is how I see it:

Actors:

1. Morgan Freeman
2. Johnny Depp
3. Mel Gibson

I really can't believe that Freeman hasn't won yet and that Depp was nominated for the first time last year.

Actresses:

1. Uma Thurman
2. Cate Blanchett
3. Naomi Watts

Thurman's performance in Kill Bill is one of the best I have ever seen by any actor or actress, in my opinion.

Cate Blanchett doesn't deserve it more than Naomi Watts. There's nothing she has made that's really Oscar-worthy, yet, her name keeps poppin' up.
Naomi Watts, on the other hand, delivered in The Ring, Mulholland Drive, 21 Grams, Le Divorce (even though the movie sucked) AND Children of the Corn 4 (;))

I think the key word in this thread is 'overdue'. As good as Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, etc. might be, are they really overdue, or are they simply deserving? When someone has been giving good performances for 10, 20 , or 30 years and has never received an Oscar, then they are overdue. Someone like Sigourney Weaver is far more overdue than, say Uma Thurman.

You've got to be kidding! Elizabeth wasn't Oscar-worthy? Blanchett should have won over Gwyneth Paltrow. Sit down sometime and watch The Talented Mr. Ripley, Bandits, Elizabeth, The Missing, Fellowship Of The Ring, and even The Shipping News and tell me Blanchett isn't Oscar-worthy...and those are just the performances I've seen. Her performance in The Aviator is the highlight of the movie.

As for Watts, she's great. Her performance in 21 Grams was fantastic. You'll get no argument from me about how good she is.

I'll be frank. While Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Pfeiffer have bigger résumeés than Julianne Moore, for instance, I think that Moore is more overdue to be awarded. I have seen her in more oscar-worthy roles than the the aforementioned two actresses.

Cate Blanchett for the women.

Fucking Ian McKellan for the men! That dude is the definition of overdue.

Only deserved recognition for Mulholland Dr. and Ned Kelly.

She was amazing in 21 Grams, you have to give her that.

I think Julianne Moore is due for an Oscar. No argument there. But think about the other two actresses for a moment. Weaver has had three nominations....Aliens, Working Girl, and Gorillas In The Mist. She's also had critical recognition for The IceStorm, Death And The Maiden, A map Of The World, and is getting good reviews right now for Imaginary Heroes. If you haven't seen those movies, check them out soon.

Michelle Pfieffer also has been nominated three times, and should have won for The Fabulous Baker Boys. I thnk her best performance for which she wasn't even nominated was Batman Returns, but unfortunately the Oscars overlook superhero movies. She also been very good in White Oleander, A Thousand Acres, Scarface, And The Age Of Innocence. I won't even mention how good she was in Grease 2!

I have a feeling you haven't seen some of these movies I've mentioned, Lecter. You might go back a little bit and watch some of them to see how good some of these performances are.

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now!

Well, Todd, let me see....

I have seen Icestorm, but didn't find Weaver's (or anyone's performance in this movie for that matter particulary engaging).

I have seen The Death and the Maiden and she was brilliant in it, definitely deserving of an oscar nomination.

I have seen Aliens (who hasn't, d'uh). I love the movie, I love the cast, but I didn't find her oscar-worthy in it.

I saw Gorrillas in the Mist. Good performance, but I found her best was in Death and the Maiden still.

I also have seen Map of the World. Which was decent, just like her performance in it, but not out-of-this-world amazing ;)

As for Pfeiffer, I saw her in A Thousand Acres in which she was good, Age of Innocence in which she was good too and Batman Returns in which she was great, but not quite oscar-material, in my opinion. I have seen most of White Oleander and that must have been her best performance so far, but I found others in the film even better.

I guess, I have actually seen quite a bit of those movies ;)

I was amazed by Moore in Magnolia, blown away by her in End of an Affair and Boogie Nights. I loved her performance in annibal (okay, I might be biased there) and thought she was great and Short Cuts. I have yet to see Far from Heaven and The Hours....

Sir Ian losing for both Gods and Monsters and Fellowship of the Ring is a travesty and an insult.

Just like him not being nominated for Apt Pupil. Another great performance.

I certainly respect your opinion, Lecter. I do like Julianne Moore ( Hey, I put her in my overdue list). My original comparison was between Sigourney Weaver and Uma Thurman when I was discussing 'overdue'. I think Uma still has a lot to prove before I would call her overdue. I usually find her a little bland in movies, but I'm sorry to say I haven't seen Kill Bill yet.

* pauses for gasps from the crowd*

If not for Weaver in the Alien series, action roles for women might be few and far between. We might have never had the Bride without Lt. Ellen Ripley.

I just want to take a moment and look at Michelle Pfeiffer. She is definently the most deserving, imo. I didn't reallize just how many good performances, great even, that she's given.

White Oleander
I Am Sam
The Deep End of the Ocean
The Age of Innocence
Love Field
Batman Returns
The Fabulous Baker Boys
Dangerous Minds
Frankie and Johnny
Scarface

Yet she only has three nods and no wins...she should've gotten nods for WO, TAOI and TDEOFO, imo.

*gasp* ;)

Well, I understand your opinion then since you haven't seen Kill Bill. While Kil Bill certainly might not change your opinion, without having seen it, Thurman wouldn't be on my list either, definitely.

I'm not downing Uma's performance, but if only one performance changes your mind about someone, are they really 'overdue'? Several quality performances and no Oscar makes someone overdue, IMHO.

Well, there is always an exact point from which you can say that an actor or an actress is overdue and Kill Bill was that point for Thurman. Not even as much the first Volume as the second. Thurman already deserved an Oscar for Pulp Fiction, but she wasn't overdue until Kill Bill.

Even with seeing it, she isn't overdue. She fit the part nicely, but it wasn't that challenging from an acting standpoint. Although her workout and her commandment of the sword is respectable it's still not "Oscar-worthy".
Overdue actresses in my mind are Michelle Pfeiffer, Catherine Deneuve, Glenn Close (five time nominee) and most of all Joan Allen

Well, you're welcome to have that opinion, personally, however, I think that her performance is one of the best I have seen by an actor or in actress in any film.
