 Edward Scissorhands
Edward Scissorhands Quote: Edward Scissorhands is a 1990 American romantic comedy fantasy film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp. The film shows the story of an artificial man named Edward, an unfinished creation, who has scissors for hands. Edward is taken in by a suburban family and falls in love with their teenage daughter Kim. Supporting roles are portrayed by Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Michael Hall, Kathy Baker, Alan Arkin, and Vincent Price.
Burton conceived the idea for Edward Scissorhands from his childhood upbringing in suburban Burbank, California. During pre-production of Beetlejuice, Caroline Thompson was hired to adapt Burton's story into a screenplay, and the film began development at 20th Century Fox, after Warner Bros. passed on the project. Edward Scissorhands was then fast tracked after Burton's success with Batman. Before Depp's casting, the leading role of Edward had been connected to Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Robert Downey, Jr., and William Hurt, while the role of The Inventor was written specifically for Vincent Price.
The majority of filming took place in the Tampa Bay Area of Florida(Carpenter's Run), which generated over $6 million for the local economy. Edward's scissor hands were created and designed by Stan Winston. The film is also the fourth feature collaboration between Burton and film score composer Danny Elfman. Edward Scissorhands was released with positive feedback from critics, and was a financial success. The film received numerous nominations at the Academy Awards, British Academy Film Awards, Saturn Awards, as well as winning the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. Both Burton and Elfman consider Edward Scissorhands their most personal and favorite work.

In my top 100, for sure.
The scene where Edward "carves" the snow for Kim is magic on film.
The score is also one of the best ever.

I actually saw the whole thing for the first time last weekend...
It really is a wonderful film. Not exactly flawless, but I can definatly look pass that.
And what really surprised me that I didn't notice was Winona Ryder's boyfriend was Anthony Michael Hall...

I should probably watch the film once again. The only time I saw it was during a film class and I found the film to be extremely annoying. Here's a mini review I wrote at the time I saw it.
_______________________________________________________
Tim Burton's fairy tale Edward Scissorhands misses more than it hits, but the one thing that can't go unmentioned is Johnny Depp. He is the lone reason why I am giving this movie anything higher than a D. This was definetly his breakout role, and deservedly so, he was the lone actor who really acted seriously in this movie. Everyone else was just laughable, maybe another exception would have to be Vincent Price in this very small role.
I'm not really sure why I didn't like this movie, I mean I tried too, but I just ended up laughing in the last half of the movie. It just ended up being absurd, and unesscesairly violent (could've been worse though with a guy who had scissors for hands). Where the movie started losing me, was the lady who was attracted to Edward (not the Winona Ryder character). That whole part was completely unecessary, and did nothing that helped out the plot.
However, besides Johnny Depp, the two things this movie deserves credit for are the visuals and Tim Burton. The visuals in this movie are stunning, and very colorful. If I wasn't laughing at the movie so much, I would look at the background, hence the noticing of these. Then there is Tim Burton. He knows how to shoot these types of movies, and he gives them his own certain feel to them. Not too many directors know how to do that.
Overall, I wanted to like the movie, but then it just became too silly and over the top for me. Johnny Depp was great, but too bad nothing much else was.

A+ its a good movie with just the right mix of sad. Depp from the start showed such promise as an actor it was amazing how little he said but you felt for edward and understood him.

Did not think it was going to be as good as it was. I almost cry everytime I see the end. Depp's acting breathed gentle, innocent naivity(sp) in the character that made it impossible to feel deeply for it.

I just watched it for the first time. Really, really sweet. It's obvious why so many people love this film (I'd say it's reached a sort of cult status), and I can only see it growing on me.

Just great. Johnny Depp is fantastic and Vincent Price's small role hit all the right notes. The art direction is one of my favorites as well (a hideous hill with a decrepit mansion at the edge of a suburbian cul-de-sac!!).

A..What a film. Depps performance was flawless. Simply amazing. It was such a sad movie though. Poor edward. Loved every second of it.

It's not a perfect film; that said, it's so beautifully constructed that I can look past the flaws and appreciate the film as a whole. One of the few movies that can make me cry; it's hilarious at times, but very sad at the end. Could be Depp's best performance - he really drives the entire film, despite saying very little. Though I felt the relationship between him and Winona Ryder wasn't quite developed enough, the ending still feels genuine. Terrific production design, makeup, and score - all staples of Burton's work. It's also quite weird to see the geek from The Breakfast Club as the jock in this film.

 Re: Edward Scissorhands
Wow, I can't believe I took so long to watch Edward Scissorhands. I might've seen it when I was little... either way, I didn't remember anything. Brilliant film. Just brilliant. Tim Burton's visual flair is as great as it's been, but the heart of the film is even stronger. I think it has as much heart as any of his movies, or any movie period. Edward was one of the most memorable movie characters of the last couple decades before I saw the movie, and after it, his place is cemented. I just ... cheered for him. For a character with scissors for hands, it's surprising how involved I was with his well-being. It wouldn't work without Johnny Depp of course, he nails the unobtrusive misunderstood man, and along with Sparrow it's one of those character creations where you know this face will be remembered for decades to come. I also enjoyed Winona Ryder's arc here. It's a fairytale-like romance, but I felt for them, and bought it when she started to switch to Ed's side. Alan Arkin, Diane Wiest, and the rest of the surburbia stock characters all do very charming jobs in their roles, and all deliver in the film's character and tone. I also loved Vincent Price and the inventor flashback scenes. The hands... The last act of this film is absolutely memorizing and heartbreaking. I already loved everything up to it, but what happens to Ed and the dark twist it begins to take pushes it to another level. It... broke my heart. But so beautiful. I also wanted to say that Hall on the ground really is a brilliant shot, it's still sticking in my mind. One thing, for those who say Burton can't have substance in his films, they are mistaken here. And I'm not talking about the heart of the movie. I wasn't looking to totally dissect this on 1st viewing and I usually don't watch film for the metaphors and symbols, but in terms of commenting on stuff like how as children and man in general is psychologically influenced for good or bad by his surroundings, how society reacts to outcasts, how man will destroy himself, the satire of surburbia, and all the other real-life things Scissorhands represented, it's all there. It's definitley a film that can be studyed and viewed in different ways. I'll just watch it to enjoy the story, but I can see it. Again, Tim Burton's visual style is at a perfect balance here. Beautiful, but not overwhelming. No need to talk about the snowglobe scene... the mansion itself and its set design is just stunning too. Elfman's score, one of the best ever, it gives me chills and fits the film beautifully. This is probably Burton's best film, or to say, his masterpiece. It's definitley one of the best movies I've seen anytime recently, and it'll probably end up in my top 50 somewhere. Amazing movie. A+

Childhood favorite. Couldn't count how many times I have seen this, and everything about it is perfect. Especially the score and Johnny Depp. Can't say much more. Top 10 (EDIT: In danger of dropping though! Didn't expect it) 10. Edward Scissorhands, 9. Big Fish, 8. Titanic, 7. Rocky Horror Picture Show, 6. Moulin Rouge!, 5. Spirited Away, 4. Pan's Labyrinth, 3. Princess Mononoke, 2. Sweeney Todd, 1. The Little Mermaid
