The Princess Bride

Best swordfight ever. Best back and forth piece of wit dialogue ever. Best fairy tale or fantasy ever. Best adventure film ever. Best film of the 1980s. The Princess Bride is probably, one of the few films that is impossible to dislike. It just has... everything. Wit and humor, perfectly orchastrated fight sequences, great fairy tale storyline and characters, romance, adventure, it's epic, it's entertaining, it's just pure wonder from start to finish. It is the complete package, and a true classic of cinema... Rob Reiner has become a poor director over the years, but this, this is a triumph. The Princess Bride is also a film that has universal appeal, it makes no difference whether you are 8 years old, 35 years old, or 70, there is no-one and I mean absolutely no-one for whom The Princess Bride isn't lovable for, it is a classic for adults and a classic for children. There is truly no shortage of compliments or adjectives you can use to describe Bride, a top 6 film of all time is rather enough.

Right time for a confession...........I've never seen the Princess Bride and never knew it even existed until a few days ago.

Moulin Rouge

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit of a softie. Admittingly... I'm a man who likes his romance. I enjoy the idea of love, finding comfort in another person, slipping into that fate. As much as other romances may measure up however, Moulin Rouge is the ultimate love story for me, no other film brought out as much emotion, no other made the love on screen as visible and moving as it is, and I absolutely love it for that.

While the story and romance is the intrical piece of the puzzle, nearly the entire film as a whole is flawless. Baz has created incredible and hypnotic editing and style to his picture, he has created a world that sucks you in completley. Ewan, Kidman, Broadbent, etc. are all amazing, they're characters are relatable and do suck you in. The music revamped from modern tunes all work perfectly, they fit right in completley... The one original song Come What May is also, brilliant.

Moulin Rouge is dazzling, a brilliant cinematic creation, in its story and artistic creation. It stands as the greatest musical I have seen and the greatest love rules all romance, in one of the greatest films to be released anytime recently.

I searched any uses of the phrase "Moulin Rouge" made by you in Cinemania after posting that, and stumbled upon an all-time Top 10 list you made a year ago. So, I have an idea of what your list might look like from here (Though it had Forrest Gump, which is in the mid-60s here, so who knows?).

And you need to see Singin' in the Rain if you haven't already. That just might be the brightest, happiest movie of all time and my personal favorite musical (Though I haven't seen Moulin Rouge in a few years).

Oh yeah, in makeshift's top 10 list... I have since looked over that list and wondered wtf was I thinking. Not that I don't have most of those movies on here, but I think I was half considering cinematic achievement with personal favorite, and I was in a mad pretentious mood(I think I put Casablanca at #1... think it was the only old movie I'd seen at the time away from Lawrence, and I wanted to be cool, so yeah). This list had a lot more thought put into one made in 5 minutes though, it probably stands as my definitive for now.

The Usual Suspects

Kayser Sose. A name that will live in infamy. While films like Se7en, Memento, Fight Club, etc. stand as great twisting noirs of that 90s era, The Usual Suspects is the crowning achievement of not only that, but of crime films altogether. I also consider The Usual Suspects to be pretty much the most brilliant film ever made as well. Singer's plot and storytelling, and the way he unveils the scheme, is just... amazing. Of course I don't want to ruin the ending, an ending that stands as probably the best ever, but anyways. Kayser stands as one of the greatest character and identity creations of well, ever, and Kevin Spacey's performance certainly helps that. I don't know how I can give enough praise to the screenplay, my top 3 films also have great screenplays, but this might be the best. The rest of the performances in the film away from Spacey, including Baldwin, Del Toro, etc., are also great. The entire film is pretty much fantastic, I don't know how I can say more. If you haven't seen The Usual Suspects, I envy you... because seeing it for the first time is a purely cinematic bliss of an experience, and to call yourself a movie buff it is a must watch. Masterpiece. Amazing. Kayser. The Usual Suspects at #4 all-time. Can't say more.

Judging from your list form the past and what I've seen of your opinions of the films elsewhere, I'm certain three of the final four are The Usual Suspects, Garden State and American Beauty, which I'm guessing is #1. Have no idea what movie #4 is.

EDIT: I took way too long to make that post. I'm guessing #3 will be the Mystery Movie, #2 Garden State and #1 American Beauty.

Garden State

Garden State is simply my favorite film of this decade. I saw it in 06, had an inclination of it being an acclaimed indie, but not much more. It became an instant favorite and has held that position since, and in fact, it made me love film like nearly no other had before. Garden State is a simple film, most of its power rely on the characters having met-up in this town, and spending a few days together. But it is in that simplicity that it finds beauty. The characters Braff creates, from himself, to Portman, to Saarsgrad, they all just feel like real people, they have that life. While Garden State doesn't have the intricacies of Usual Suspects in its script, its is almost as good, and also ranks up there on my all-time favorites. Just the dialogues between the characters, when they first meet, the scene in Portman's room, the breakfest encounter, the fireplace scene, it is all just perfect. Braff and Portman themselves give perfect performances, they practically become these people. The music is of course among the best for a soundtrack ever, the cinematography and direction beautfiul, and one thing that occured for me in the film that for most others who loved it didn't, is that it's also funny, and not just a little bit either. It had me laughing, with the characters, because I was right there with them. Garden State is engrossing, scenes like Portman riding the bike with her helmet, or the ending, nearly everything... It takes the indie genre and demolishes it, it makes an amazing directorial debut of a man trying to find his home again, and the characterizations that he meets and discovers in himself and others. The love story isn't as 'epic' as Moulin Rouge's, but it is just as real and believable, and you just can't help but fall in love with these people. It is the best film of the 00s that I have seen so far, and I can safely say, I'm a Garden State goon... This is the kind of movie I will watch repeatingly until I die.

Rats. I considered putting it at #3, but the fact that you named it your favorite comedy of the decade even though it's not really a haha comedy showed you really, really, really loved it.

I haven't seen it, but I'm not sure I want to. It just seems like the kind of movie I'm gonna hate.

And I predict #2 will be something from STEVEN SPIELBERG.

All About Eve

All About Eve is the most cinematically apt film that has ever been made. It contains one of the greatest rise and fall stardom storylines, it has pitch perfect character depth and deceit, and oh yeah, it has the best acting and writing of any movie I have ever seen. First, Bette Davis. She is an absolute animal in this movie, just inhumane. There are some performances that are magnificent because of how subtle or real they may seem, and then there's something like Davis in Eve, where she dominates the screen in such an inhumanly huge manner, it is impossible to take your eyes off of her. The loud moments, the quiet moments, the moments where she isn't talking, it is THE best performance that I have ever seen. But while she is the standout, Anne Baxter is also brilliant in a subtle way, she has all these inner theivings inside her, and her eyes as she goes through the film portray it perfectly. Celeste Holm, George Sanders, Gary Merrill, Hughe Marlowe, and so on, it is the best cast I have seen assembled.

Then, the writing. How biting, how sharp, the dialogs between the characters, the way the deceit is revealed, I mentioned good scripts is a common theme among my top 4, while Usual Suspects may have the most brilliantly twisted one, Eve's dialogs and words itself probably make it the best of all time. The script is so strong, it ends up making most other films of the era, seem dated with their conversations. The screenplay in Eve is just so vivid, it leaps off the screen, it completley lives up.

Eve's storyline is also, what do you know, amazing. Eve at the beginning of the film is a seemingly meek person, a shy little girl, but as it goes on the stage gets to her. She starts moving away from the obsession, she starts getting ambitious, she starts getting hungry. The transformation as she goes from what she is at the beginning, to the star in her apartment at the end smoking that cigarette, is brilliant... that apartment scene with the girl and the mirror would rank as one of the best ever, actually.

All About Eve is a film that is simply timeless. Amazing doesn't cut it.
