It's only a picture, but...

I am INCREDIBLY EXCITED for this movie. The show is/was absolutely hysterical, and Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway seem like excellent choices for Smart and Agent 99.

Movie's directed by Peter Segal (50 First Dates, The Longest Yard, Anger Management, Tommy Boy) and comes out June 20, 2008.

I don't see anything about the movie that looks interesting. And with Peter Segal directing, we're looking at McHale's Navy-style crap.

Cast in fun though. Hate to see 'em wasted.

It is utterly impossible the movie could be as bad as McHale's Navy

It has a great cast and Steve Carrell does fit the role of Maxwell Smart, I still think Anne Hathaway needs to be recast. Shes too young for the role and is like 20 years younger than Carrell. I would have prefered someone older like in their late 20s to mid 30s

And she's suppose to be a "veteran agent"?

Carell is perfect though. This should definitely help him recover from the inevitable bombing of Evan Almighty. I could definitely see $100M+.

I'm gonna make a wild prediction and say this will be Anne Hathaways break-out role. Her roles in Prada and Brokeback were fine but underwritten, I think this will be her first step towards really being a big star... She just has the look of someone I could see blowing up very soon.

Yeah I could definately see a big hit there because of Carrell, the Rock and the rest of the cast. That picture makes it look like Carrell and Hathway are father and daughter

It was a great show, and I think the pieces are there for this movie to be really good, but I have some feeling that it could very well end up like just about every show-turned-movie: Utter crap.

Not a real big fan of Hathaway(she was merely ok in Prada, too easily overshadowed by her co-stars), but Carrell is very good, even though Evan Almighty looks to be a huge mistake.

I can count good films based on tv shows on one hand. It's not looking well for Get Smart.

The Fugitive, X-files, The Untouchables, Dragnet, Star Trek, SWAT.

Thats more than 5

I'll give you Mission Impossible, The Fugitive, and The Untouchables.

Hm, good point.

What's the opinion on The Brady Bunch Movie around here? It's gained a major cult following over the years.

I'd argue Mission: Impossible is junk as well. If animated South Park or Spongebob are discluded as well as Serenity, I would have to agree as well. The Untouchables is probably not only the one masterpiece tv adaptation, but the one really great one I can think of off the top of my head as well. Fugitive is good but a bit overrated, Starsky and Hutch is an enjoyable Frat Pack-er but not much more.

Whoops Apocalypse was a decent movie adapt of a TV series. Yes it know its obscure.

It's hard to capture the magic of a tv show. Something is lost in the translation.

I think the main problem is that it runs the problem of feeling like an extended episode of the show with higher profile actors or some fan fiction in movie form laced with in-jokey cameos.

The great thing about The Fugitive is that the show was about as close as you can get to serialized TV when it first aired, so they were able to make a movie that was essentially the series scrunched up into two hours. Kimble is wrongly convicted of his wife's murder, escapes, evades authorities, does a couple good things along the way, finally uncovers the conspiracy, is cleared after a big gunfight. I haven't seen The Untouchables, but I think that's a similar case.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see movies of Lost, Veronica Mars or other serialized shows 20 years from now.

It's not really Maxwell Smart unless he sports one of these babies:

Veronica Mars will never have enough namesake to get a movie.

Lost if anything would probably make one as its running like X-Files, I think... otherwise I can't see a future adaptation work. Ditto Heroes, if anything it'll happen in the next 5-6 years.

I'm thinking 24 and CSI could hit the big screen with new actors and faces in 20 years.

I'll be disappointed if it takes that long -- we must accelerate our rate of cultural cannibalization if our society is ever going to make it all the way to hell during our lifetimes...

I loved Get Smart when I was a kid, and I'm old enough to have watched them when they originally were shown! I had such a crush on Agent 99 that I named one of my bands that when I lived in Boston...

I am not real enthused about this. I withhold judgment until it is released.

Well, there goes that idea. And I had such hopes. They weren't even high!
