In any case, there is one thing I fully agree with him on. Temple of Doom is definitely my favorite Indy flick as well!

Number 70

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

One of the most viseral war films put to screen Ryan is the highpoint of Spielburg in the 90s. The Omaha beach opening still has the power to shock and all of Hanks platoon are pleasingly fleshed out characters making their eventual demise all that more meaningful. It may have lost to Shakespeare in Love at the oscars but in the public mind there was only one true winner and that was this movie.


Number 69

Below (2002)

A criminally overlooked Horror from director David Twohy see's the crew of US submarine Tiger Shark begin to experiance strange goings on on there Sub. Is it ghosts or something else? The movie is all atmosphere and tension with very little outright scares. But the ever heightening sense of dread shreads the nerves to the bone and frights when they come are all that much worse. Time will be kind to this movie.


Number 68

Heat (1995)

This spiritual sucessor to Mann's earlier career effort LA Takedown brings together the 2 greatest living actors in US cinema today in the forms of De Niro and Pacino. This alone would guarantee a classic but Mann also hoists them into a superb cat and mouse game of Pacino's emotionally explosive cop chasing down De Niros cool calculating thief. The cafe exchange is memorable and the heist scenes an example of a highly skilled director. Miami Vice will have to be damn good to beat this.

Number 67

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

With its sequel currently crushing the opposition at the US Box Office Pirates 1 lands at 67 on the all time list. There is one thing which raises this above the standard summer thrill ride, and that is Jack Sparrow. Operating like the bastard child of Pee Wee Hermann and Keith Richards Depp delivers a unique performance. How good was it? well he got an oscar nom for what is essentially a popcorn role. Able support is provided by Rush, Knightley and Bloom and the action scenes rarely let-up. Is Pirates 2 good enough for the top 100? I'll give it a few months and then see


Number 66

Election (1999)

A dark piece of satire from "Sideways" director Alexander Payne pits Brodericks "Mcallister" a high school teacher against Witherspoons "Tracy Flick" an ambitious go-getting with big plans that she doesn't mind stepping on people to get to. If you like your humour black and subversive then you'll love this movie. Flick is a truly nasty character her false sincerity making you cringe, and Mcallister despite his best efforts is no match for her.


Number 65

The Bourne Supremacy (2004)

Jason Bourne is back for more action in the follow up to the 2002 hit "The Bourne Identity" as new helmer Paul Greengrass adds frenetic camerawork and energy to an already solid story. Damon is perfectly suited to the Bourne role and the sense of gritty realism that is infused into every scene, renders the competition especially the cartoony Bond movies obsolute. Wonder why Casino Royale is going to be a tougher colder affair then the Brosnan Bonds. You have your answer with this movie.


Number 64

Pitch Black (2000)

Vin Diesels breakout role and a new Sci-Fi Horror classic, Pitch black is at 64. Like all great Sci-Fi movies this one goes straight by the science and dives into the fiction as a motley crew of standard space passengers find themselves on an uncharted planet were the dark isn't just un-nerving it can kill you. Avoiding the bloated dialogue an moronic mumbo-jumbo that can kill many a space movie this is a brilliantly lean beast that is pulled along by Diesels menace and raw power. Add to this a constant state of tension and unique washed out cinematography and what you have is a movie which will probably be always Diesels best. Don't let the dark bite.


Number 63

Terminator (1984)

Before this movie James Cameron was probably best known for being fired from the set of Pirania 2 while Schwarzenegger's movie career looked set to be nothing more then token Big man roles (Conan included). After this Cameron became one of the hottest tickets in town and Schwarzenegger started on his road to movie superstardom. And on the evidence it was well deserved as Camerons movie brought forth a nightmarish vision of the future welded skillfully to the balls out action that was a pre-requisite for all 80s muscle movies. Hamilton (despite her scary 80s hair) acquitts herself well as future mother to humanitys savior against the machines but this is Arnie's movie. His immense physical presense tied to a not undifficult role will go down in the annal's of cinema as one of the best ever. And of course there's that famous Line as well.


Number 62

Batman (1989)

By a lot of logic standards this movie shouldn't be above Batman Begins on the all time list but for me Burtons original captures what I like more about the infamous bat then Nolans brilliant but grounded vision of Bruce Wayne. With this version you get Burtons trademark Gothic undertones, a greater sense of the theatrical (without slipping in to Adam West/Joel Schumacher territory) a stronger villian in the gloriously over the top Jack Nicholson and dare I say it a better Bat in Keaton. Begins is the Bat for the real world, this version is the Bat of the surreal the comic and in the end that is the Bat for me.


Number 61

Chasing Amy (1997)

The second Kevin Smith movie in the top 100 lands at number 61. A step up from the wobble that was "Mallrats" "Chasing Amy" is probably the tightest most focused of the Smith movies and the one with the most serious message. The romance of Affleck and Adams plays naturally thru out the movie with Lee's snarky "Banky" adding to the stories overall bite. Of course this wouldn't be a Smith movie without the obligatory number of memorable scenes and there is plenty here. Be it Banky's and Alyssa's explict descriptions of their sexual mishaps, conversations about the sexuality of Archie and the running gag that is a militant black gay character in the form of Dwight Ewells Hooper and you have the recipe for cinematic gold.

I almost want to do my list again.

I did mine a year ago, it was just about the first thing I ever posted at this board. The thing is that I sort of mixed in greatest films and favorite films, and I included a bunch of "classics" not because they were my favorite films, but because I was new and I wanted to seem all informative. By now my movie favorites list has evolved into something completley different, I actually have a set list of my favorite films now floating around in my head, not just the same old. I'm not sure though...

Wow, great list there, man. Not exactly similar to mine in terms or rankings, but many many of the films there belong to my favorites and I can't say there is a single bad film on there. I think the lowest grade I'd give to some films there would be a B+. Sadly this grade would also apply to your #1 which I find a good film, but ridiculously overrated, hehe. Same for The Shawshank Redemption.

Jaws, Aliens, ROTK, Predator, Fight Club, T2, The Matrix...all of them and more would wing up in my all-time Top 50.

I feel like doing a revised top 100 list. I made one midway through 05, it was pretty much the first thing I did on these boards, the reason I want to do another is: a) When I made the original list I was a newbie that only wanted to be cool!, so a lot of the high films on my list were high because in the film respect world, I had it in my mind that I was a freak if I didn't have them on there. I had a few snooty and pretentious choices, and also some completely random films that I have no idea what I was thinking on when placing them there.

b) My movie horizons have vastly increased in the year and a half since I made that, nearly doubled probably. I had a lot of random filler the last list because I couldn't think of much more, this year I do not. and oh yeah,

c) On bof I was just beginning to post that list, and as of this weekend as of a certain event I've stepped down from running or posting at that site, in a situation I won't get into here. I had spent a couple weeks putting this list together, and feel that if I have the list together, I might as well post it. Magnus was halfway through his list over on there too, and he got deleted for a wacky reason and has also decided to use that oppurtunity to stick here, so I'm sure he'll want to make one too. I'm first though.

I'm not going to lie, there's a few choices on here some people won't like, and of course there is some people will agree with completely, in any case I'll have full explanations for my choices however, this is my top 100 list and nothing is a fluke. This is a favorites list, not a 'greatest cinematic achievement' one, though obviously things like amazing writing and acting and direction do play into whether or not a movie stands as a favorite, those things just add to how high on my list these films rank.

I will commence sometime later tonight.
