Yes, it was funny, but definitely not laugh-out-loud hilarious. Usually I appreciate British humor a lot, maybe I just didn't get some of it this time around. The cast was good and I loved all the gore, but I imagined to to be way funnier.

A few big laughs, but not the masterpiece the media, especially the british one, wants it to be. I had far more fun with the Dawn of the Dead remake, which was a more straightforward movie and had more fun ideas than Shaun. (C+)

After the first 20 minutes or so the movie is absolutly genious. Gory, entertaining, hilarious, romantic. The movie's got it all.

Shaun of the Dead: New Zombie Classic!
This is the real deal! Shaun of the Dead is not only a true zombie movie, but it is an irreverantly hilarious romantic comedy too. It has instantly entered the pantheon of classic zombie movies, and vaulted on to my top ten list of 2004.
If you have any feelings towards zombies, go see it now! (As always for comedies, my standing recommendation is to go see it with a lively crowd on a busy night... where's the fun in DVD?)
5 out of 5.

I found the first 20 minutes very, very boring. Once they get to the bar scene where Ed is trying to cheer up Shaun is where the movie really takes off.

The first time I saw the film I found it to be funny. When I saw the film for a second time tonight, I started picking up on the references to the George A. Romero films. For instance they use a brief part of the soundtrack from Dawn of the Dead by the Goblins during the sequence when the two guys are trying to figure out how they are going to save Shaun's mother. The name of the appliance store is named after Ken Foree. And the line "We're coming to get you Barbara".
It's a fun experience to see the film without having seen the George A. Romero films, along with other zombie films, but it's better if you have seen them.

Great movie, Stylish, witty and great comedic moments. Finally someone in a zombie movie that sucks at shooting. The best part of the entire film is when Queen comes on and they beat the shit out of the zombie with pool sticks.
The only parts I found to be weak was the dramatic moment with the mom's death. That whole scenario has been played out so many times, and just felt too serious for this movie, which was more violent, and funny then dramatic. Although Dawn is great for having the running zombies, Shaun proves that slow zombies are still a great way to pass the time.

I am not a horror fan -- most horror films are, well, horrible.
I really enjoyed Shaun of the Dead, not just because of the humor, but also because it was fairly well acted and directed and even made logical sense (something you can't say for many horror films).
I give it a B-. Worth seeing and enjoyable, but no masterpiece.

Possible one of the sharpest comedies in terms of writing released in the past 20 years. Its not laugh out loud funny, but then a lot of British humour isn't designed to do that, instead its the little extras in every scene that leaves me with a big grin on my face throughout. Pegg and Frost make a great duo and the scene with Queens Don't stop me Now blaring from the jukebox is one of the best ever filmed.
Brilliant Movie

Utterly brilliant horror/comedy with one of the smartest screenplays in recent memory and some great visuals. Every scene in the film is either a reference to another horror film or a foreshadowing of what to come, and it works perfectly. The humour is very dry but very sharp, making it very unlike a film like Anchorman while remaining just as funny as that. The direction and editing are surprisingly fresh for a comedy, and the gore effects are great fun. Add to that some terrific acting, especially by Nick Frost as the big comedic lug and Bill Nighy as the evil stepdad, great use of music - "Don't Stop Me Now", anyone? - and some great dialogue, and this is one of my favourite comedies ever and certainly one of the funniest films of the new millennium.

Certainly, not as hilarious as I thought it would be. Actually, it's funny for few times and most the time - nope' not working.
And to be honest, and I know I shouldn't take anything seriously, but the stupidity of the character (particularly Ed) really annoyed me.

I agree, the build-up that is the first 20 minutes is rather brilliant. Everything after that is equally great. It's that rare comedy that puts as much weight into the technical aspects as the writing (The identical tracking shots of Shaun going to the convenience store are genius). Definitely one of my favorite comedies of this decade (And I'm still annoyed I have yet to see Hot Fuzz).

 Re: Shaun of the Dead
Perfectly paced tension and suspense. Brilliantly funny. More epic than I imagined. Shaun of the Dead blew my expectations out of the water. The last 20 minutes before the aftermath was amazingly depressing though. Had a lot of heart in it. Only small complaint was language.

 Re: Shaun of the Dead
I can't remember how I felt initially, but my regards for the movie have only gone up since then. Repeat viewings have yielded how truly brilliant the film is, in nearly all aspects.
