loyalfromlondon wrote: The only thing keeping 300 from being pure perfection is that the screenplay doesn't really work. But it's a graphic novel brought to life in explosive fashion. I could care less that the political subplot was zzzzzz.
I wanted less talkie-talkie and more stabbie-stabbie. The side plot with his wife was irritating, you can't imply she's so smart that her husband values her opinion and then she's dumb enough to trust West and drop her dress, wtf, possibly the dumbest female character in an action movie ever. Once she lets West fuck what reason does he have to do anything for her? Honestly, the whole scene in the Hall was just boring after the idiotic meeting between then. I like BUtler and scenes with the Spartans, they were fun. JaWS mCbunty wrote: Libs wrote: I will say, 300 has some of the best one-liners ever. I've already used "Tonight we dine in hell!" today.
My own personal favorite has to be "Give them nothing, take from them everything", though. everytime since the last 2 weeks someones come to me and said something like You are Mad! or anything along the lines, I've answered "Mad!!!?? THIS IS SPARTA!! and proceeded to kick them. its funnier when they don't know what you're talkina bout.
That's awesome, I am going to start doing that...
The film did have great one liners, especially from Butler, who was really charismatic on the screen, much better hear then in the Phantom.

It's awesome, awesome, awesome the second time around, especially in IMAX.
And I finally saw this goat thing you guys are talking about. I guess I missed it in my first viewing, but saw it tonight. I bursted out laughing.

The scene where Quasimodo goes to Stargate guy and declares that yes, he would like to be fucked is probably the worst sequence I have ever seen in a major motion picture.

Well my opinion isn't going to be well liked, so if you loved the film you might as well move on. As for the other two people, this is mostly a ramble so maybe you might want to move on too.
C
And I'm being generous. The only thing this movie has going for it are the visuals and once the novelty of them wears off, there's really nothing left to 300. As a matter of fact, I found the action "sequences" (Slow motion crap) to be somewhat tedious. Blood spurts, we move on. An occasional leg flies, we move on. And then repeat. Followed by a break where a general's dumbfuck of a son gets decapitated with a slow motion NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (Or he might have been saying his son's name, I forget. Who cares?)! Then go back to battle and they all die, with a remaining survivor and the others who left, who has to tell their story of bravery. Well I'm just overwhelmed with emotions that I feel like crying.
See, I wouldn't have minded all of this if the battles weren't one carbon copy of the other. Maybe in IMAX the film looks a lot better? 3-D prehaps? I don't know, and I won't find out for myself, because I'm not paying $13 to sit through more tedious crap.
In fact, the only good things about the film are Gerard Butler's over the top performance, the first 30 minutes of visuals, and the brief snippets of nudity. I know I'm comparing to different period pieces, but in some scenes, it seems that 300 almost wanted to become Caligula. But just like in the battle scenes, too much restraint is shown. Maybe that's thanks to the MPAA, I don't know. And that's another problem I had with the battle scenes. There was not enough gore. Sure there was spurting blood, but only two or three heads rolled, and only a couple of people lost a limb. What the hell?
And groundbreaking? The advertisements have been spouting out that the film is groundbreaking. In what sense? The visuals? It's Sin City in color (Minus the gore). The plot? Hardly, not to mention in some parts incredibly corny. I know in most war films you have to have a protective wife (Or queen) to set in the "emotional aspect of a film", but come on. Did they really need to copy Gladiator with two scenes?
The whole film is a just a mess. Most of the visuals aren't exciting (Which is embarassing for a film where you are supposed to leave your brain at the door). The performances are too over the top - only Butler's works. And maybe I've become desensitized after Kill Bill and Sin City, but it's not graphic enough.
300 goes down as a disappointment in my book.

This movie really was a lot worse than I thought it was. I'm only giving it an A because of the battle scenes. Every scene with the hunchback idiot was painful to watch. Was he really necessary?

Heh.
People shouldn't complain any more about fake F's. Other grades are as fake as much as them.

I don't know why they thought portraying Ephialtes as Quasimodo was a good idea, but the character and the act of betrayal are historically true.

MAJOR SPOILERS DO NOT READ IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW.
Okay, so I finally acquiesed, and with Arsi imploring me to do so, I saw the film. And yes, it was a lot of fun. I'm still not quite sure why it is such a phenom but the film gets going right at the beginning and just doesn't stop. And although all the action and bloodshed was the driving force of the film, I have to say that my favourite part of the film was when the Queen killed the bastard of a traitor. Have you ever seen a film where a woman from that time period exuded that much strength and character. That part was just fucking brilliant. I don't think she was dumb for trusting him. She loved her husband and did whatever she could to help him. Bad judgement? Sure? Dumb decision? No. Killing him was just brilliant though.
9/10
