there is one thing thats been annoying me. while i do feel that this flm was style over substance, i do not like the implication that this movie lacked substance.
i've had time to analyse and i think that this movie offered a lot in terms of character development, idealogy delopverment and surprisingly, a consistency throughout which i usually fail to see.
a lot of scenes in the film complimented characters, the type of people spartans were and the comments that were being uttered.
even more surprising was that other than the no mention of the 5000 greeks who came to support the 300 spartans in the true story, almost all story elements (other than the transexuals and goat headed men) were quite close to the real story, including the dialogue.

Leonidas' passion and devotion to his cause was excellently portrayed.
Besides, I do believe that in some rare occasions, the style can become the substance.

Anybody who expects this to be historically accurate is batso in my opinion.
A movie about the Mongols shown in this manner is just begging to be made.

Eh. I guess I was one of the ones who just wasn't crazy about it. It was good, yeah, but there was just something that was lacking. The political aspects dragged on needlessly and the pacing was really off. I did like the ending though, it was a nice and fitting way to end (not referring to what happened, rather the way it was shot).
But overall, eh, I liked it better than Sin City (a lot) but still, it isn't anywhere near my favorite of the decade or anything like that.

I think this quote best sums up how I felt:
Quote: "History is inconveniently complex. And so we get Frank Miller's version, in which everything is simplified to the point of porridge."
Stephen Whitty, NEWARK STAR-LEDGER
Now, don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting something actually historically accurate but it just felt like everything was far too dumbed down. The dialogue was shoddy, the film was way overlong. It was basically a cool film to look at and that was it.
Oh well.

some of you guys take this movie too seriously. It does what it tries to do, and it does it very well. This isn't a history lesson.

Same here. When I saw them throwing grenades and then heard it had something to do with "throwing their magic", I almost lost it there.

it wasn't really to long, certain scenes were pointless...
The film is gory and maybe twice or thrice in the movie you would go ewwww!!1 but it isn't to gory. It not scary or disterbing like Hostel.
However i did like it how they did pause the battle here and there. The battles were interesting, but after 5-8 mins they get a little to much.
Plus when i heard they were magaicans i thought they were gonna like turn people into frogs or like cast lighting or somthing.

i'd like some of these reviewers to go read about the real story and then comment on historical accuracy. the film does a good job of keeping with a lot of series of events and doesn't spend much time creating too many of its own .. other than the nudie dancing oracle type of shit.

I pretty much agree with Jeff. It was entertaining, but it really left me cold, which a film like this really shouldn't be doing. I'm still wobbling on a grade of *** or **.5. It might go up when the disappointment wears off, it might go down when the awesomeness of the battle scenes wears off. By this morning I was left with more of a "meh" feeling reflecting back than a "wow."

Because men with muscles, spears and swords spilling blood, and a rhino, is ultimately more badass than a Travolta and Allen motorcycle poop comedy. 300 is so damn cool that you can't give hate onto it, it's impossible.

I mean, I haven't seen Wild Hogs, but from marketing and what I heard from who have seen it, it was a good time.
The hype I feel of this movie is making people overrate how good the movie truly is. It's just a film that delivered what it marketed. That doesn't make it really better than a lot of other films. There are films that have better visuals and actions than 300. I think if this film wasn't as hyped up as it was, people would have rated this much lower.
I've been getting that feeling too. Everyone here seems to say "There was something missing BUT IT WAS SO COOL! - A-"
I'm seeing Wild Hogs tomorrow with my family, so I can fill you in on how it really compares.

Which reminds me I broke my "no Martin Lawrence movies" rule and watched Wild Hogs, all I can say is if 300 is even vaguely like Wild Hogs in the mindless action department I'll eat my own nutsack.

hey if you want a historical version check out the actual 300 Spartans film. Its very good on its own merrit.
While the basic story is the same they really only focused on the strength and way of fighting. There were some great military strategies used. If they made that movie with this style it would have been awesome and very good.
PS- I know theres a lot of talk about the goat, but did anyone think it was even funnier because it looked like it was smoking up? It was such a bizarre scene.

I don't know about you, but I believe the goat is the current frontrunner for a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the moment.
