keeping in mind I've yet to see many of the possibilities....
Children of Men
The Fountain
The Departed
The Prestige
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan --- (including Pan's Labyrinth here would render these nominations the darkest thematically of all time. So lets spice it up with a ridiculously funny and well made comedy.)
with Children of Men or The Fountain taking home top prize.
films I have yet to see: Dreamgirls, The Queen, Iwo Jima, Casino Royale, Little Children, Volver, Shortbus, Half Nelson, The Proposition, Babel......
films I've seen that I don't think deserve it: United 93, Little Miss Sunshine

Of the biggies, I have yet only to see Little Children and Letters from Iwo Jima... Pan's Labyrinth and U93 would be the easiest to be replaced on my list.

Realistically
Little Miss Sunshine
The Departed
Letters From Iwo Jima
United 93
Borat - If this had been an off year, it could've happened.
In dreamland.......
1. Little Miss Sunshine
2. The Departed
3. Casino Royale
4. Superman Returns
5. Rocky Balboa
4 & 5 - I said it was dreamland. Also, The Departed would win on both lists and Babel doesn't exist.

I guess I should clarify, this is my realistic ballot. My dream ballot would be:
Brick
Children of Men
The Departed
The Descent
The Prestige
with CoM winning, of course.

If it was not realistic I'd replace the bottom with POTC: Dead Man's Chest
