Loved Pan's, but I felt that its type of cinematography has been done before in Sleepy Hollow and A Little Princess, which are, ironically by Emmanuel Lubezki.
I was hoping that a sci-fi/action/thriller type of movie would win this time.

I also find it interesting that Santaolalla won twice in a row (is he 2 for 2 now?).
IN a very insular category, that's pretty out of the ordinary.

Pan's winning the cinematography award is the only thing that night that bothered me really. Children of Men had some of the best cinematography I've seen in years.

Have you guys heard the whole score for Babel? If not, please STFU. Thank you. 
Of the major 8, I'd say The Departed for Adapted Screenplay, honestly (not to mention Picture!). 3 greater works nominated in the same category (Notes, Little Children and Borat), not to mention it's a remake of a supposedly even better film (haven't seen it yet)... Also Arkin for Supporting, but I understand the win since the Academy doesn't have the Best Ensemble award. And Whitaker upset me for being Lead instead of Supporting. Haven't seen Mirren and Hudson's winning performances, so no comments for now. I won't talk about Scorsese.

COM not being nominated for any of the sound awards still irks me.

Wasn't paying too much attention to the critics, when I said "supposedly" better, yeah.

Sometimes, just because the score seems so "minimalistic", you think it's just "a few strings", like tons of people like to say. That's all.
(but yeah, hearing the score separately might convince some people...)
Babel's score (as the whole movie) is extremely underrated in here.

I think the score nominees this year were all rather weak-ish to be honest. I'd have given it to The Queen from the films I saw and from what I generally heard, to Pan's.
Last year's nominees were all vastly better. Munich, Brokeback, Gardener had splendid scores!

Also, I loved the upsets for Best Animated Film and Best Song. Cars is solid but definitely overrated and Happy Feet was the best animated movie of 2006. It had fantastic animation too. And none of the Best Songs were great, but Melissa Etheridge beating all of the annoying music from Dreamgirls was a friggin' delight. You're one angry gay guy. It's funny because I'm sure that nobody who actually knows me would describe me as angry. They'd probably describe me the exact opposite. I'm not really a very angry person. But I know I came off angry in the post since I was ranting.
Anyway, it was disappointing that Pan's Labyrinth didn't win Best Foreign Film, since it is a great film, but since it got the other awards and is already a big hit for a foreign film and will obviously live on and be a cult favorite it doesn't bother me that much.
And Cate Blanchett should have won Best Supporting Actress, even if it was obvious she wouldn't.

Pan's' was good, and listening to it later, I'm really impressed by it. But it didn't really strike me while watching the film, and I think that's where it's lacking. At least for me.
But yeah, I agree, I think the nominees for Score this year paled in comparison to those for last year.

If I could think of a single reason why babel didn't deserve score it is that, as i mentioned before, it reminded me quite a bit of the score for amores perros and 21 grams. it was perfect for the movie, though. _________________ Best Actress 2008

yeah, put me in the "i like babel" group... i don't love it, but i like it. the score win was deserved. i quite like that 'stuff'.

Hm... I'm thinking Arkin winning. As much as I love the movie I didn't think his performance was anything award worthy.
My personal pick was Haley, but I honestly wouldn't have been bothered with Murphy, or even Wahlberg winning. (haven't seen Blood Diamond...)

I thought Babel's score was an improvement over Brokeback Mountain's score last year. Where were the haters last year against the composer or it's just an anti-Babel-winning anything sentiment?

Mine was Forest whitaker. I remember I had posted that they wouldn't award a BA for a performance about a insane dictator but somehow he had hollywood spellbound by his performance which some have considered more on a BSA level rather than BA and also that the overall film itself was lackluster. I just don't understand his win other than for me to conclude that he's obviously very well respected among the members and they really really liked his performance.
