It was a better movie than the other nominees and a much bigger box office hit (which does matter). I'm glad it won because I like DiCaprio.

2006 was pathetic.

But no, The Departed's win doesn't show it. 2006 was poo IN SPITE of a great pick by the Acadmey.

Um, you might want to edit the title, I think. Some people who have not yet seen the broadcast or have not been able to see it yet due to where they live (and will see it later) may not want to be spoiled!

Peace,
Mike.

Eh, no.

2006 had Departed, Pan's Labyrinth, Casino Royale, Prestige, Children of Men, Letters, Little Miss Sunshine, United 93, etc

Pretty solid year i'd say.

Well it was a weak year. Although not the weakest in recent memory. It was probably as weak as 2005. The weakest year in the last 20 years is still 1996. The English Patient is just a forgetable movie.

06 was my best year ever. 13 As and Pan's and Letters still to go. Last year I had 6, the ones before that not much more.

Eh, not the best year, but The Departed was a wonderful win. I'm extremely excited about it. I haven't been so pleased with the Oscars in a very, very long time - not since Titanic cleaned up, I think...

The Departed is destined to become a footnote and bit of trivia in Scorsese's career, whereas films like Children of Men, Shortbus, Half Nelson, Little Miss Sunshine , etc... will be watched, loved, and discussed throughout the next decade.

I've learned early on that Best Picture isn't meant to be literal.

Children of Men and Little Miss Sunshine definitely...But the others are much too small to be remembered...especially more than The Departed. I just don't understand all the hate for it. LMS was too small-scale to win Best Picture (although it was very good) and none of the remaining 3 were as deserving.

I think the big movies of 2006 years from now will be The Departed (Entertaining, won BP, finally got Marty his Oscar), Children of Men (Great sci-fi films have a way of being too far ahead of their time - see Blade Runner and 2001), United 93 (As one of the definitive 9/11 films, possibly The), Pan's Labyrinth (Almost universally loved) and maybe LMS (I'm not certain how well it will age, but I think enough people will carry it deeply in their hearts).

I'd put Departed way ahead of Babel and more or else equal to Queen and Letters. I don't hate Departed. Just as someone who's been lucky enough to follow Scorsese's career as an adult, Departed is pop fun and was a total lark. Departed's win said more about the AMPAS' failure to award for past brilliance than some overwhelming need to award the film itself. I'm happy that Marty won, so he can move past all this non-winner nonsense and get to making some movies.

Now, I don't understand the notion of small scale and LMS. I think that's mostly made up, how is LMS any smaller than Ordinary People or Annie Hall or Midnight Cowboy or M$B or Crash or dozens of other films? There's no answer because it isn't.

This year's awards are already a fading memory in my mind. It's highly unlikely any film I'd consider the best of the year would win BP, let alone be nominated. And I'm 100% cool with that.

I would've been fine with LMS winning Best Picture. And I would've had a reason for Departed not winning if it didn't win as well. I just think the fact that LMS was a small, dark comedy didn't make it as appealing for a Best Picture win. Obviously there have been exceptions in the past, although your comparisons of Crash and Million Dollar Baby I don't really understand, for both were dramas and Crash in particular was that 'message film' that the Academy loves to award once in a while. I'm just saying the race was so tight every movie had a good reason to win and just as good of a reason not to win. I was just pointing out what I thought LMS's was.

lol. Don't mind Loyal. He's still all bummed out that Dreamgirls didn't get the big lovefest he expected it to get, and then when it failed to get Best Picture and Best Director noms, his backup Little Miss Sunshine couldn't win either.

Peace,
Mike.

My guess.. He means action dramas get screwed by lots of editing/ad breaks... Not so disruptive with heart-felt comedy...

it's ironic that you chopped my post.

Jon made a list of films that will be remembered from 2006. A large part of a film's ability to sustain itself for years to come is cable (Shawshank is a perfect example). Departed does not have this particular luxury in that a vast majority of it is unfit for basic cable. Where as you can tweak Goodfellas and Casino and other Scorsese works to pass standards, Departed loses a lot when filtered for content.

clear?

It won't help, but it'll hardly hurt.

And speaking of being choppy, how the hell is Arkin's 1st big scene in the van going to survive the censors?

pretty much. So much of the lovefest over Departed revolved around Jack, Mark, and Alec. I can only imagine what the filtered conversations will sound like. :hahaha:

Myself I think The Departed seems like it will stand the test of time far more then Little Miss Sunshine, and a lot of that is because I just flat out appreciated it cinematically much more then LMS. It's all opinion loyal, and while I can certainly identify with your frustration, I think that the cable TV argument sounds a lot more like drawing straws then a legitimate reason. Couldn't someone argue that CoM shouldn't win BP then because they'd have to cut down the 7 minute camera shot in Children of Men with the people blown in half? Yup, sounds like a pretty big stretch of an argument to me too.

Just finished the delayed telecast - im glad i didnt look up the winners. Great result for The Departed! Most deservant of the nominees. And to me 2006 was a good year for movies (well atleast from October onwards).

The Departed is a better film than the solid but overrated Little Miss Sunshine. Im glad it won. I sure hope there isnt a Departed backlash on the internet like there seems to be every other best picture winner in recent years.

I think 2006 was a strong year. You had great fuilms like Departesd, LMS, Casino Royale, Rocky Balboa Iwo and so on. I think the Departed winning is very just. I'm just thrilled that Babel won nothing but a consolation prize for music. :hahaha:

2006 just had disappointment after disappointment.

I only gave out a handful of As. If you gave out more than 10 you're over compensating.
