People need to be prepared for a Babel win
Now, I'm not saying it's going to happen. In fact, I don't think it will.
But if it does...
The outrage, the hatred, the annoyance, it's gonna come out in full force. So let's get some venting done here to maybe offset what might come later.

I really really really really really don't think Babel is going to win.
I really don't.
At least Crash was the dark horse last year, Babel seems to just sort of be hovering in the background behind Departed and LMS.
I suppose it's a possibility, though.

Look at the OscarWatch.com chart.
It's 5 wins (The Departed) vs. 3 wins (LMS) vs. 2 wins (the other three). But Babel won the Globe, which historically predicts the Oscar very very well. And it has the most nominations (well, besides Dreamgirls).
LMS has gained a lot of ground since the Globes, but I don't think Babel has lost any. We're just forgetting that it's there.
When you consider that Departed and LMS have almost equal chances of winning, Babel is still the dark horse
It could win.

I still think it's Babel vs sunshine.
I'd be lying if I said i wouldn't get a kick out of a win for Babel.

If Babel won, would that make it the lowest-grossing Best Picture winner in like 30 years?
I can't think of one that had made less money. At least Departed, LMS and Queen have the "made money" factor in their favor.

I'd bet my right Testicle on Babel not winning.

Try 35. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Godfather Part II, The Sting, The Godfather and The French Connection all made more. Box office wise it really would be a pathetic win.
I still have it as my #2 after The Departed, largely due to the admitted celebrity fans (Gwyneth Paltrow, Mary McDonnell, Brian Grazer, to name a few).

Maybe the dramas will cancel each other out and LMS will come from behind?
I don't know, Babel could win it. It doesn't seem to have the impact Crash had on Hollywood, but I'm sure it has a following.

It's all about momentum, and Babel's momentum was back in December/early January, when it was raking up all these nominations.

It would be one of the worst wins in the history of the awards, right up there with The Greatest Show on Earth. Anyways I think that ever since it won the Globe and had 7 nominations the negative word has been much stronger in an attempt to shut it down.

If I hear Babel called, I'll probably just hurl all over the TV.

I would say so too, but what other film has caught up to it? LMS has gained some traction, but I still don't see it happening. The Departed peaked earlier on as well, so I would say it's neck and neck between those two (The Departed and Babel).

I would lose a lot of my respect for the Academy Awards.

I don't know...it seems so wide open this year.
I bet the BP winner will receive less than 30% of the vote.

Believe it or not, this has been consuming me all week. I fear Basbel winning. I realldy do. There have been some wins that have bothered me, like Cuckoo's Nest and Silence of the Lambs, just to name a few. But I at least get it. I understand how and why they won. I don't agree with it, but I get it. But to me Babel is such s hit film. I mean, it isn't even a good one. It is so boring and pointless and poorly filmed and executed and wqritten and so on. If this wins, I will NEVER watch the awards again. I am afraid tonight.

Babel is so underrated here! It's ridiculous. I really don't understand all the hate.

I'll give you ten reasons why I hate it. And I coudl give you 100.
1) Illogical. A Mexican nanny living in America decides to get in the car with a drunk guy, and try to cross the border.
2) It could have been cut by about 20 minutes. How many shots of a band playing pointless wedding music can you have? Why do we care about the Mxican Wedding?
3) The kid masterbating to thoughts of his sister. Ridiculous.
4) Why would anyone shoot at a bus? I don't care how old or young you are. Shooting at a gun has consequences. How could they be so stupid?
5) This movie wreaks of pretention. I'm honestly surprised this is not produced by the Weinsteins.
6) There is not one likable character in the film, except maybe the maid, maybe.
7) The deaf girl getting naked for the cop is excessive and just plain silly.
8) Brad making out with Cate after she pisses her pants is just too much.
9) Why go into the local village and wait for an ambukance when you can take the bus, three hour drive or not.
10) The tangental connections to each other in the film is so fucking stupid and pointless. It just defies logic.
I could go on and on.

At this point unfortunatley every inclination I have is telling me The Departed is not winning Best Picture tonight. I think I have it as 1) Little Miss Sunshine 2) Babel, or maybe even switched around.
I'm REALLY scared.

I don't think it's gonna win but I am, nonetheless, predicting it to win to prepare

I've lost a substantial amount of respect for the Academy Awards after last year. I can't lose that much more respect really.

For some reason, I never saw LMS as the Best Pic winner. I would LOVE to see it win, but I never saw it. I think it's The Departed. In the end, it probably did come down to Departed and Babel, and Babel's momentum is gone. That's not to say Departed has any momentum, but simply because Scorsese will take home Best Director, I think Departed will ride on that win (along with the solid reviews from virtually everybody).

If anything the academy would be going against popular opinion and voting for something they support instead of what is popular. that is a leason to lose repect simply because you don't like a film? hmmm see this is the point where a part of me really wants the movie to win, just for my own personal enjoyment.
