The wins for Forrest Gump and its leading man are in the upper echelon of shameful Oscar nights. Just awful. What's next, that Sean Penn was simply robbed for I Am Sam?

Naughty list.
Are you gonna update the Oscar history thing you made before? The one where I'm the only reader?

And have you seen Hackman in Unforgiven? That was a career high in a great movie. Not that Jaye wasn't great in Crying Game, but if he was such a great actor, where is he now, 15 years on?He had very little interest in pursuing a movie career, only other movie of note he was in was Stargate and even then it took a lot to talk him into doing it. Davidson was never an actor by profession hence his own personal decision not to carry it on afterwards.
Exactly... it took a huge check to get him to do Stargate. He never, ever wanted to have a place in Hollywood. It wasn't his thing. God knows if he is still in the fashion industry.
Nonetheless, it was awesome to see him. I was way too young to have remembered seeing him in the public eye at the time. I'm sort of glad he made a profound performance and disappeared. It makes him all the more enigmatic and memorable. I do wish they would do a retrospective or something. He's getting older.

Unforgiven is beyond marvelous, you goons.
It's one of no more than 3 or 4 cases where the academy genuinely awarded the best picture of the year.
At the risk of making folks like zennier place me back atop some mystery list of hate....The Crying Game? Jaye Davidson? Nahhhh.

Oh, do tell. Jaye Davidson is far too admired around here and a few controlled burns are always healthy.
Who said you were on the list of hatred and scorn?

Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s acceptance speech is my favorite of all-time.

Looking back at 1999, I think Tom Cruise probably deserved the Oscar but wow at Michael Caine. Now that's how you make an acceptance speech.

Oh man, how I remember Gwyneth Paltrow totally losing her shit when she won. I think she goes down as the most tearful Oscar winner ever.
I love Shakespeare in Love to death, yet I *still* find it shocking it won Best Picture. Stupid Weinsteins.

Watching the clips, I'm reminded at how patient and relaxed the Oscars used to be. Now they're "rush, rush, rush". Specifically, watch the Michael Caine clip. The nominees are presented so leisurely with some nice, long clips, and Caine isn't rushed. So much better. I hate last years ceremony, not only because Crash won (which just made it worse), but because it was the most compacted/rushed show I've seen yet. I hate that.
Peace,
Mike.

I raandomly thought of that year when they handed out some awards to people in their seats or had all the nominees on stage when the envelope was going to be read.
Is it just me or did that whole idea of spicing things up seem even stupider now than it did then?
Oh and on a totally different note... I REALLY love the campaign the Oscars have this year for the telecast. The billboards with those classic movie quotes. I dunno, everytime I see one, I really like it.

Yep, that was retarded.
And I agree... It's the goddam Oscars, the highlight of the movie year, rushing people off the stage is so wrong.

Anyone know a good program to rip the youtube videos? I've been able to do it before but the youtube changed something in how the file is played and now my .flv files I've recently made don't play anymore. Any ideas?

Snrub recently made a thread about that in Water Cooler... should be on one of the first couple pages.

I thought the Snow White video was oddly hillarious.

God, I forgot how emotional Halle got when she won. It took her nearly two minutes to get to the stage and actually start talking.
And then she did Catwoman. That, my friends, is a squandered career.

Her speech was far too long.
