Quote:
Army of Darkness (also known as Evil Dead III, Evil Dead III: Army of Darkness, Bruce Campbell vs. Army of Darkness, or The Medieval Dead) is a 1992 comedy horror fantasy film and the third installment of the Evil Dead film trilogy. It was directed by Sam Raimi, written by Raimi and his brother Ivan, produced by Robert Tapert, and starred Bruce Campbell and Embeth Davidtz. Continuing where Evil Dead II left off, Ash Williams is trapped in the Middle Ages and he battles the undead in his quest to return to the present.

Army of Darkness is not as violent or gory as the prior Evil Dead films, relying more on slapstick. The film was produced as part of a production deal with Universal Studios after the financial success of Darkman. Filming took place in California in 1991. The Director's Cut premiered in October 1992 and the Theatrical Cut was released in the US on February 19, 1993. It was a commercial success, grossing $21.5 Million, though critical response was generally less positive than the first two films. Since its video release it has acquired a cult following, along with the other two films in the trilogy.

This movie, IMO, is the best of the Evil Dead series. It combines horror, action, comedy, and epic time periods into one great ride. Bruce Cambell is a certified B-movie LEGEND after this one.

I don't like this movie. I was just never able to get into it. I originally saw it when it first came to video. I didn't like it then either.

I like this movie a whole lot, but sadly I don't share the passion for it as many horror fans do. It has great rewatchability and Bruce Campbell definitely owns the film, but it is certainly not as striking to me as the first two films in the trilogy are as it clearly departs from horror to a horror comedy. Campbell carries the entire movie, however, and his comedic timing is pitch-perfect.

I would say Bruce Cambell is the best in this one, but the 2nd is my favorite. This is just two different from the others. Still a great time though. You can tell that this is when Raimi came up with Hercules and Xena.

Totally ditches the horror from the first 2 installments and goes pure comedy ludo, the end result of which is moments of true hilarity in between scenes that fall flat.

Bruce Campbell really does get pushed around a whole lot in this one and the fact that Middle age Europe looks painfully like Arizona is a bit of a personal nitpick of mine.

Still those great one liners always get me smiling

Gimme some sugar baby.

Just continues the further descent of the trilogy. Bruce Campbell is classic, and there are some terrific scenes, but overall it's silly, cheesy, and not really that funny. The fantasy horror aspect of it doesn't mesh well with the action adventure element, and the comedy makes it go way over the top. I did like the obvious influence that it had over the Helm's Deep battle in Two Towers, though there's no doubt in my mind at all which sequence is better. The ending is pretty ballsy too. But the slapstick doesn't work nearly as well as in the second one, and the acting, script, and even visuals are all pretty poor. I can't say I'm too big a fan of this franchise.

It was probably my least favorite of the series, but overall, it's still a blast. I loved the Army itself... the intentional artificial-ness of it all and the jagged movements are just awesome. I agree that Campbell does his best work here in the two roles, and the slapstick humor is still pretty awesome.

If I have any complaint, it's that I wanted it to be longer.

4.5/5

Watched it this morning. Was my first time seeing it. Didn't love it but it was good. HD transfer was great.

Campbell is really good and charismatic, but the movie is so slight and I didn't think it was all that funny or exciting. I thought it started off really promising and clever but kind of went downhill. But with its short run-time it was an easy watch. I laughed here and there.

It does get worse towards the end. The gag is kind of running thin by about half-way. But the first half, and especially the beginning, is excellent.

It's awful, and one of the worst films ever made - imo.

Vastly different from the original two and its not longer a horror movie. There are some really good comedy bits in here but the most of the film falls flat specially the end war which is good in itself but does not serve well as the series finale.
