Good point Doc. But I am saying that perhaps he needs to mature a bit before he can graps everyting. You are probably precocious enough to understand it when you were 14.

Like Lester says at the end of the movie, "You probably have no idea what I'm talking about right now, but you will someday." You need to watch it again when you geta bit oder. It'll all make sense then.

I love that scene. To me, it was actually quite chilling.

Interesting but underwhelming to say the least. Cooper was dreadful here.

I thought it was an extremely articulate movie, considering how abstract the theme was. For those who considered it "underwhelming", at least appreciate how it didn't shove its views down your throat à la Crash.

Oh Cottina! There was nothing to grasp at despite so many characters and themes.

Me no likey. Me thinks smug and excrutiating and condescending and vaguely misogynistic. Actually, me hate it. Me wish American Beauty would go away.

Man, life in suburbia is like, so hard, and stuff! Jeez!

Dead to me.

Yeah, but anyway.

I actually haven't seen American Beauty in 2 or 3 years, I'm thinking it's time for a rewatch. Still probably in my top 10 of all time.

I have 3 Kevin Spacey movies in my top 7 or 8 of all time, heh... He's not even really one of my favorite actors if I had to make a list, he's just been a part of some really phenomenal movies. And I haven't even seen L.A. Confidential yet, that could be another masterpiece by way of K.S.

Spacey came off as a bit a wanker in this role. I didn't like him at all.

A neat little movie that i've always enjoyed. I can imagine the suburb malaise it depicts as my worst nightmare.

Living in the countryside allows you a sense of individuality and the thought that you might be worth something, Lester's hangdog expression and general sense of life slipping away does resonate with a point in my life about 3 1/2 years ago now, althou I certainly wasn't as comfortable has him. Probably why i like this movie because of it.

Just watched this again because I've matured a lot since the last time I saw it, and in honor of this thread.

Still amazing. :)

If the other two are Se7en and The Usual Suspects, you should definitely check out LA Confidential asap.

I saw it again last night after a couple of years and surprisingly it holds up very poorly. I have to now downgrade it from a solid A to a around B.

The story, dialogue, and direction no longer had the freshness that it had back then. Even though I thought the lead performances from Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening were excellent back then, this time around they just seemed extremely weak, perhaps the effect of their later typecasting. Its flaws stand out much moreso than before.

Perhaps it is a testament to this movie how much influence it had in creating a slop of imitators, but what if the imitators repeated the original enough so that the original is no longer relevant? Sadly, this movie cannot stand the test of time and I feel will not be considered "great" when discovered by new audiences in the future.

I experienced something similar. A few weeks ago I watched this movie for the first time in many years, and I was surprised to find that it no longer affected me like it used to. It actually seemed a lot more cheesy and forced than I remembered, and overall it just wasn't nearly as phenomenal as I remembered. Went from an A+ or so to a B.

For me the dialogue and scenes weren't as 'fresh', but I found myself loving the film in a different way than I had before. In terms of characters and depth and what the messages of everything is in the film, it still remains as amazing as anything I've seen... the surface events are no longer astounding, but as time goes by, I think people will start to see the film in the way the tagline asks you to, to look closer.

I said before my rewatch that it was the best film ever. Is it after this? I don't know, I don't have a definite #1 movie. But it's definitley up there, top 5.

A (#1 of 1999)

I love this movie. It's incredibly well written, directed, and acted.

I would not say that it is one of the best movies of all time.

It is a great movie, wonderful performances all around (I was going to single out one or two but cannot, all great), good story and great direction.

Anyway, for me it is an A
