Iwo Jima has made only $2.5 million at the box office, and the lowest grossing nominee rarely wins Best Picture. With it being nominated for ZERO guild awards, let alone any major ones, I think a win is out of the question. It also has no acting support, etc.
With Dreamgirls not even in the runner anymore, Little Miss Sunshine having missed Best Director, I seriously think The Departed has an a really good chance now, unless LMS's PGA win translates into a Best Picture win, or Babel ends up winning like we thought might happen.
GREENGRASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH HOW I HEART THE ACADEMY!!!!!!
Peace, Mike.
this truly is a weird academy season.
You've got LMS that really isn't a main contender.
Got Departed that looks most promising but with a director that gets no break
Iwo Jima that has nothing going for it but its freaking Clint!
Babel that created the biggest upset of the Globes
And Queen thats just been bloody consistent.
I think the door is open to everyone. LMS is probably the weakest of them

Wanna get a ton of nominations? Make a supposedly "Deep" film involving diversity

Oh, Dreamgirls got 3 song nominations, otherwise it would not have been the leader.

Wow, after the Volver snub for Foreign Film, Pan's Labyrith is the clear winner. This makes it easier to predict.

Dreamgirls gets three Song noms!!!!!!
Blood Diamnonf gets 5 noms. DP07 and Baumer will be pleased.

No The Queen or Letters in Editing, and The Departed missed a few possible techs (Cinematography). It does look like Babel is the strongest out of this gate.

Oddly enough I think LMS is the strongest. Remember the nominations are from a period where the momentum was behind other movies, no the momentum is in LMS favor which will influence voting. Everyone looks at Babel vs. Departed, LMS might sneak in

I just noticed that! That's big! The Best Picture winner usually is an Editing nominee. More good news for The Departed.
Peace,
Mike.

Holy cow..... LOTS of surprises. And I'm loving it!!!!
No Dreamgirls. OMG. I'm crying from happiness. And Letters got in. The Best Picture of the year got in!!
Paul Greengrass for Director. Can't say I'm excited about it but if the film deserved one nod, it's this one.
Actor and Actress and Supp. Actress were expected (except Leo got in for Blood Diamond)
Supporting Actor: WOW WOW. No Nicholson? But I am SOOOOOOO psyched about Wahlberg. I can't believe he got in. I'm sooooo happy!!
Volver got SHUT OUT No Screenplay, no Foriegn Language. What the hell???
Borat probably took Devil Wears Prada's spot in the Adapted Screenplay.
I don't think any movie gained alot of ground today. The Departed and LMS showed signs of some weakness while Dreamgirls dropped out of the race (there really is justice in the world). Babel maintained its contending status but a nom for Supporting Actor would have pitted (pun intended) it as the front-runner.

Well... Babel win win Screenplay.
Alejandro González Iñárritu is a producer on Babel... he gets his Oscar when Scorsese wins Director.
I also sense the pro-Latin force going into these Oscars... not that that's bad but...

The Queen got in Score and Costume Design. Glad to see the support is there. It's still a sleeper.

In favor of CLICK.
They sure love old people makeup.
An Inconveneint Truth becomes probably the first docu since Woodstock to get more than one nomination too. I love I Need to Wake Up.

Hudson is still a lock. If she falls off a cliff then Blanchett.
Director, the acting categories, the writing categories, foreign picture, animiated picture, visual effects, documentary and song are pretty much locked to me.
Maybe not BSActor... but I don't know who would win instead of Murphy.
