I expect there to be very little surprises in the nominations.

This season has been too unpredictable to expect Dreamgirls/Departed/Little Miss Sunshine/Babel/Queen rinse and repeat.

Your sig definitely gets my hopes up that all the attention CoM has been receiving, even without the major awards shows nominating it, won't go unnoticed come Tuesday. But, if something goes from that nearly etched-in-stone 5 BPers, I'm hoping for Babel and The Queen, and definitely not LMS or Departed ... ...

To an extent.

Does anybody remember... Letters from Iwo Jima?

Remember how a month ago it was a frontrunner? And now... it'll be lucky to receive *one* Oscar nomination?

What's that quote in your siggie from, Loyal?

As for surprises, I only expect surprises in S. Actor and maybe Director. Otherwise, it should be pretty pedestrian.

My predictions for the site should be completed sometime tonight. I've already done Picture through Actress (I didn't even bother to update contenders 6-10 for Actress, that category is so dull).

Other than United 93 getting a Best Picture nomination, I think the best positive surprise for me would be Emily Blunt getting a Supporting Actress nomination.

I think Marky Mark and/or Djimon Honsou will get a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Children of Men will probably have to settle with 2 or 3 tech nominations, and I could see a 3/5 BP/BD split.

Oh, Djimon Hounsou will definintely see a nomination Tuesday. The universe always feels the need to scold me for devoting way too much time to thinking about this shit. I'm reasonably confident about his chances, not to be confused with my crushing sadness at it.

Along those same lines, I'm looking at a 5/5 director/picture matchup.

Why did you hate him in Blood Diamond so much?

Blood Diamond has grown on me a little since I saw it, it was really entertaining. And I love Leo's "I'd like to get kissed before I get fucked" bit too.

I agree it was entertaining, but I can see how a cynic wouldn't like it. How many scenes were there of those two running away from soldiers shooting everyone and everything but them? I counted at least three war zones they easily slipped through, despite Leo being the only white guy in the scene. Or how about that poor evil general who had his camp get exploded right as he was about to get that diamond. He just couldn't catch a break.

Everything about Blood Diamond got on my nerves. Everything. Particularly Hounsou's scream-happy perf. He had what, 6 lines of dialogue and about 14 Oscar-bait freakouts? Fuck that movie.

It failed on the most basic of levels. An an action movie, it not only fails to thrill, but is deeply offensive. Sanctimonious, condescending garbage that tries to educate while titillating with 'serious' violence. Yeah. You can't be compassionate and 'important' while trying to get the audience off on carnage and James Bond-ian ludicrous escapes. Sorry. It's like Ed Zwick as Mary Poppins, using a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down. Ed Zwick thinks we're all morons.

It's also inherently racist and xenophobic (we need white and/or American characters to guide us through a movie about Africans...of course).

Blood Diamond is infuriating. So is every critic and voter who gave it a moment's consideration.

All this, and it's still only the eighth worst movie of the year!

-Maybe Clive Owen will get a surprise nom.
-I could see Babel not getting best picture, U93 might get its slot.
-And even if Babel gets a bp nod, I can see the director not getting one because there's a lot of competition there.
-Cuaron could sneak in with a director nom.
-Could Matt Damon somehow get a best actor nom? He had as much screentime as Leo.

That would be a major surprise. But, a best Pic and Best Director nom would probably be needed along with it. Clive Owen being the only major CoM nom would be a huge surprise.

:| You lost me.

For some reason, I didn't like Damon's performance in Departed. I would have preferred someone else. Maybe I need a second viewing of that, but I don't recall being blowing away by Damon.

On the Hounsou's aspect i totally agree, on all the rest i don't because the bluntness of the film lines up perfectly with the cold nasty reality of what it shows. the white man thinks he can somehow save africa and is morally better then it, and thats what the film is. yes its a shitty racist message but its perfectly true to life for me. better then some politically correct garabage being dumped on me like Hotel Rwanda.

As for the Awards I still believe CoM can sneak in as the 5th nom. The Queen will be the one to lose out.

Seriously, there's just something (call it foolish hope) that makes me think that this building buzz around it for the past month or two will culminate in a few surprise nods for CoM at the Oscars. More than just those tech awards.

So, are there any films in history that resemble Children of Men? A movie that didn't get any major recognition (Globes), but ended up with Best Pic/Best Director noms?

The Cider House Rules had only 2 globes noms (Sup. Actor/Screenplay) and didn't win those, and then got 7 Oscar noms including Picture and Director, and won for Sup. Actor and Screenplay.

I think Blood Diamond is one of the best of the year. It doesn't surprise me that you don't like it. You call it sacntimonious, funny coming from you and some of the films you like.

Ex, why are you holding your hopes so far above your head? They're fragile, and tomorrow morning is supposed to be very windy. : (
