What can Little Miss Sunshine get nominated for at the Oscars? Will it "have enough" for a Best Picture win?

Best Picture
Best Director (is Condon now the shaky 5th slot?)
Best Supporting Actor - Alan Arkin
Best Supporting Actress - Abigail Breslin (now that this seems to have big support?)
Best Original Screenplay (frontrunner to win this now over The Queen and Babel?)

Can it get anything else other than those? But with all those majors, it seems like it's in a good position if it gets them all.

Peace,
Mike.

I'm still not going to rule Steve Carell also getting a Best Supporting Actor nomination out. Between Arkin, Nicholson, Murphy and Jackie Earle Haly, there seems to be one more spot that a lot of different people could get, especially Carell.

It could also get:

Best Original Song nom
Best Costume nom (it was weirdly nominated at the costume guild)

It's been 29 years since Annie Hall won, the film was released 30 years ago.

I'd say comedy is just a little due.

Of course, the last indie film like LMS to win the PGA was The Crying Game, oanother favorite of Loyal's that lost BP>

We also have to remember these ballots have been in for some time. LMS could have 3 noms, could have more. Hell, it could have missed out on a BP nom completely. There are so many unknowns.

That's so true. Mostly I just want to see if the LMS directors will nab a Best Director nom, or if they will be knocked out for a lone director nomination and for being a husband and wife directing team in general. If they get Best Director nomination at the Oscars, and then go on to win the SAG and/or the WGA Original, it will lend more credence to LMS ultimately winning Best Picture of 2006 at the Oscars.

Peace,
Mike.

Outside of an INOCA nomination (Go OW!) his perf hasn't been recognized anywhere else.

If another actor gets in, it'll be Collette, who has both a GG and BAFTA nom.

So?

People have snuck into the supporting categories before without any other precursors.

I have never been so anxious for the Oscar nominations in a long, long time, and for the Oscar ceremony for that matter. Who the heck is going to win? The only thing we have left really is the DGA and the SAG to make a big impact and indicate anything. Then it's just waiting for the Oscars.

Peace,
Mike.

I agree. I doubt I'll be able to sleep much Monday night for the 5am alarm. Literally nothing will surprise me. The nominations could be all over the place.

Exactly. I agree. Collette could get in, as opposed to Breslin (or maybe both).

I don't see Breslin missing. She's the heart of the film, to nominate the film and snub her would be ridiculous.

Collette would probably knock out one of the Babel ladies, which wouldn't entirely surprise me.

Heh, OW is so bitchy right now about the win. Ah well.

I'm pretty sure Hounsou has that 5th spot for Best Supporting Actor anyways. He's been recognized all over the place, and he's been honored by the academy before. Hell, I'd even have Pitt stealing a nom ahead of Carrell getting in at this point as well.

Are they all LMS haters there? I can envision some grade-A snobs there who think only movies with deathly serious subject matter should ever get awards.

Yeah, I'm predicting Hounsou for Blood Diamond over Carell, but I'm just saying I don't think Steve Carell can be ruled out yet.

Carell is probably 11th right now, behind the main five, Wahlberg, Sheen, Affleck, Pitt and DiCaprio (If the Academy moronically follows SAG's lead) ahead of him, in that order.

As for the category itself, it's usually the most ripe for a surprise, be it a nom (Hurt in '05, Alda in '04) or a snub (Quaid in '02, Buscemi in '01). I've got either Wahlberg or Sheen in his place (Still trying to choose which one).

You prophet, you!

Although I'm one of the few on the boards (and in the world, for that matter) who was never enamored with LMS, I'm actually quite pleased with this. Things are getting fun!

I noticed that too. Everyone at OW seems to hate Little Miss Sunshine and think this win is so undeserving. But they were all were hoping beyond hope that Dreamgirls didn't win, and it didn't, so they should be happy!

I love the Little Miss Sunshine win not only because I love the film, but because it opens the race so widely. I think Kris Tapley put it well (who was the only "Oscar person" to predict LMS to win the PGA):

Little Miss Sunshine = PGA Winner
The Departed = BFCA and Critics Awards Winner
Babel = Golden Globe Drama Winner
Dreamgirls = Golden Globe Comedy/Musical Winner
The Queen = Critical darling et al.

Wide open race.

Peace,
Mike.

They don't hate the film itself (Well, a couple heartless souls do), but the majority finds it overrated. Not THE most overrated (Babel holds that title, as seen by the many jokes about it), but it's up there. There's also some anger about United 93 and others getting overlooked for what most consider a bland five.

Theys always bitter, I tell ya. But I love 'em for it.

That's their way of avoiding being repetitive in saying "Go The Departed!"

All this even dispensing of awards and "wide open race" talk just gives more credence to the fact that United 93 WILL PULL THROUGH AND STEAL A SPOT IN THE TOP 5 COME TUESDAY.

Yes?

:(

*sigh*

I would be very happy if United 93 knocked out The Queen or Babel (especially The Queen, which I really don't think deserves a nomination).

I just wanted to say how much I love this year. I love The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine, and really appreciate and admire The Queen. I haven't seen Dreamgirls, but I do think it adds a nice touch to the Best Picture 5-some of the year, it's a movie's movie, big, loud, and cinematic, I never wanted it to win, but I support it getting a nomination lots. Babel is the one movie I hate, but you can't win em all, and... it's useful to have one movie to hate on. Hell, even in the overall film picture this year, I had 12 As, last year I had 5. 2006 kicks ass... The fun academy season tops it off well. I'm just kind of want to forget about 2005's Oscars altogether, even Brokeback while I do appreciate it as masterful filmmaking, that is not a film I'm dieing to get the copy of and watch again anytime soon. Ditto Capote and GNAGL, it's great great indie-esque filmmaking, but an entire nominee batch of them is tiresome.

OW made a good point. Though The Queen, yet again, has flown under-the-radar throughout all of this, it's likely that BAFTA will give it the nod, so...

This thing really is wide open.

Wow this was a turning point in the BP race but not in the way I thought. I expected Dreamgirls to win PGA pretty easily though I was hoping for a "Departed" win.Dreamgirls has no WGA nom and will not win DGA or SAG ensemble though it can still win ACE.
Forget about Dreamgirls being the frontrunner for BP even if it has the most Oscar noms come Tuesday.

i guess im an attention whore.

mostly, i just want jamie foxx's ego to stop increasing at an exponential rate. if that means going after dreamgirls, than so be it. levy does it for lesser reasons, why can't i?

besides, babel gets picked on enough.

why's the fact I disliked the movie a lesser reason?

For the record: I am perfectly happy with LMS winning this one.
