This isn't even a question of nominations, but FLF Oscar gold. Its a toss up, who do you think will walk away on top and why?

Pan's Labyrnth. Volver has been losing steam with the critics, and even though the critic's choice is not always the clear winner, this time it will be. Pan's has better reviews than Volver (and some of the best, if not the best reviews of the year for any movie). It's looking likely that it could get a screenplay nod and a few technicals as well as a possible directinng nod. Of course, Volver could still take it, but everything is working in Pan's favor at the moment.

Almodavar has been rewarded before, and Pan's Labyrnth has so much going for it that I think if anything beats it, it'd be The Lives of Others.

I think Volver may still be the more mainstream and obvious choice but Pan's Labyrinth is one hell of an underdog and I say this after having seen it.

Pan's Labyrinth may be a notch or two higher in my top 10 list but I honestly don't know who is going to walk away now. Pan's is definitely a bit more out there and unconventional (lol, can't believe we're saying that in comparison to an Almodovar flick) but it may affect you just a tad more than Volver.

I think it's going to come down to which film the Germany votes is going to help/hurt more. The Lives of Others has its strong support too. With Volver and Pan's in play, I don't think it has the strength to win but it does have the strength to have a say in the winner.

Funny thing, both Volver and Labyrinth are in the same foriegn language just submitted by different countries.

And yes, Volver has been losing steam. I think the studio really messed up with its release schedule and didn't allow it to gain enough overall word of mouth and buzz.

I went and saw Pan's Labyrinth with a friend who had just heard of the movie last week by several friends' recommendations. I found it extremely surprising that people are already highly recommending this film.

I'm rambling. Conclusion: I'm more confused than ever but I starting to believe Labyrinth can win this.

I'm saying Pan's Lab because the whole Mexican thing is hot now.

Volver -- easily -- it's just the Academy's taste...

Has to be Pan's. It now has 20 100s at MC for a score of 97. The reviews are out-of-this-world good.

I'm hoping it's Pan's, although I haven't seen Volver to compare.

I haven't seen either yet ( ), but I voted for Pan's Labyrinth. It seems to be favored by most.

Maybe there'll be a major upset and The Lives of Others or After the Wedding will win.

I question the sanity of anyone voting for Volver.

Pan's Labyrinth, and it completely deserves to as well. It's the best foreign film I've ever seen. What a fucking amazing movie.

If even you thought it was "OK", why would you "question the sanity of anyone voting for Volver"?

People on this forum, myself as well on occasion, love to use more than their fair share of exaggeration.

It was hyperbole

Ohhhhh... so it was supposed to be funny. Now that you explain it, I can imagine why some people might find it humorous. An example of exageration for effect, perhaps. Ha ha, good show!

Let me try! Anyone who votes for Pan's Labyrinth must be a retard!

Say -- that is quite the funny bone tickler...

:hahaha:

(But don't forget, the last laugh will fall to the supporters of Volver when it takes home the Oscar.)

Have you by chance seen both movies?

I would make a friendly wager with you because I am certain Pan's will win, but not sure what can be done on a forum :)

Yes, I've seen and enjoyed both movies.

As to the wager -- sure -- you're on!

I'm willing to wager a little of my forum honor, if you are...

Hmmm. Tough one. I want to see if Volver totally dies or picks up steam with its supposed wide expansion. Right now, I think the Academy will pick Pans Labyrinth (I could see them loving it) even though I would personally pick Volver, and thought Volver was a stronger movie. Neither was an A though, more like an A- to a B+, so its close.

Well, we know who wins this one now.

Volver, who wasn't even nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, vs. Pan's Labyrinth with SIX, count 'em, SIX Oscar nominations. Pan's Labyrinth, as I knew all along, has it in the bag. The support has been just too phenomenal all along.

And Bradley lost his bet. Heh.

Peace,
Mike.
