And the Academy Award for Best Picture goes to... Babel!
"The film explores the ways in which cultural assumptions and biases tend to obscure reality even when reality is plain, and the way our perceived differences keep us from finding a human connection to one other."
-- Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times
Alejandro González Iñárritu's Babel just won Best Motion Picture -- Drama, the most prestigious award of the night, at the Golden Globes. It's been incredibly consistent throughout the season, from critics top ten lists to the various Guild awards, and has now become an even stronger contender by defeating The Departed and The Queen at the Globes.
Personally, I believe it's on its way to the Academy Award for Best Picture. It's a relevant film with an international cast, powered by out-of-this-world admiration. So, who is with me? Who else believes Babel is on its way to the ultmate movie award: Best Picture at the Academy Awards?

Would be weird for a 1 word, five letter title, an ensemble about essentially the same thing that won last year, won again.

Um... I didn't put the name of a Globe winner in the title.

Yeah, but it would be easy for anybody to assume you meant it won the Globe

Sorry to have spoiled it for you Matatonio, but if you didn't want to be spoiled, I don't understand why you entered this forum in the first place. Surely you could have guessed this forum would be busy with conversation about what had happened at the Globes. Plus you're actually opening threads and reading them, and still here chatting. I would have avoided this place altogether, if I didn't want to be spoiled.
Anyways, I apologize.
Peace,
Mike.

The Departed is taking BP though, so I guess this is a nice consolation prize.

Babel is a great movie. Departed is great as well. But I don't feel any of those as a real Oscar movie. Dreamgirls is that. I feel sorry for saying that, because I hate Dreamgirls. I hope there's a chance for U93. Remember last year? An early release without GG BP nod won before the frontrunner. It would be fun that happaneing again.

You don't need to enter this forum to see the title. It will be shown from the main forum index if the thread has the latest post.

I'm in.
As for Babel winning best picture. It wouldn't surprise me. Half of the academy hasn't seen it anyway. Marty is definitely winning best director this year, and to be honest, if Babel wins, I know I'll throw up. I'll try not to, but I'm going to have a puke bucket beside me when I'm watching the oscars.

Oh, and btw, did you see Brad Pitt handing an envelope to Harvey Weinstein last night? I did, I have access to a behind teh scenes camera. I knew Babel put the Weinsteins on teh payroll to sway the voters in favour of their film. I think Bob was in the background getting his ass licked by Cate Blanchett last night. It's the only logical explanation.

I don't see why they are making films like Epic Movie.
When they could make a spoof film called "We Fucking Get It Already"
And spoof all these "important racial dramas" that tell us how bad we all are.

But then we wouldn't get to pay ourselves on the back for all on progress, and on MLK day no less
*eye roll*
I have yet to see Babel, because I just can't muster the interest.
This shit all started with the overrated Traffic.

I had erased the memory of that piece of trash from my memory, Crash really is the child of Grand Canyon, but Grand Canyon has faded into oblivion, thank God.
Also, it was not as loved as Traffic, you have no idea how happy I was to see Traffic lose the BP Oscar, it rocked my world.
Traffic said nothing profound about anything, Bencio Del Toro being good does not a good movie make.

I found it just as bad, condescending, apparently it was new that rich, smart girls take drugs, WOW, what a bloody shocker, I thought crack was only for crack hos, y'know.
Traffic started my lack of patience was this stuff, but I will admit I was able to watch traffic without wanting to kick a baby, but it was still bad.
I actually had to rewatch Grand Canyon about 2 years ago, I had forgotten had bad that was. The more Babel gets awards the attention the less I am interested. Everytime I read its an "important" film the chance I will see it decreases greatly.
I'm tired of "important" films that will change us as people, if Crash changed me, it just made me even bitchier.

I Am Jack's... wrote: Damn You Babel/Crash/Grand Canyon http://www.darkhorizons.com/news07/070118h.phpThis week's Best Actor Golden Globe winner Forest Whitaker ("The Last King of Scotland", TV's "The Shield") is set to take flight in "Winged Creatures".
Set in Los Angeles, the ensemble drama deals with a group of survivors after a diner shootout. The script is said to be a deeply moving examination of both the emotional fallout and a critique of American society.
Guy Pearce and Kate Beckinsale have already signed to star and "Little Fish" helmer Rowan Woods will direct says The Herald Sun.
In related news: Did you hear my pitch for the Best Picture of 2009? Here it is:
My next
story is going to be about a colony of ants that has to coexist with a
family of anorexic and dyslexic Arabs who have an uncle in Japan who
might have sold some sushi to a couple in Australia who might have shot
some dingos with a Beebe gun. The Dingo meat was sold to an Icelandic community and they were decorating their Christmas trees while dining on the dingo meat. They are all connected somehow. George
Clooney and Cameron Diaz are interested in the script.
