The 'United 93' Thread (aka suck it x1000, loyal)
So, like many of us were predicting upon its release earlier in the year, United 93 just became a contender with support from some critics circles (a bit of a sigh of relief, frankly).
Let's keep the momentum going for what very well may remain the best film of the year. Ready? Go.

I think it can nab a nomination at the Golden Globes with a lot of the competition not being in it's category (Dreamgirls and Little Miss Sunshine in Musical/Comedy, and Letters from Iwo Jima in Foreign Language). For 5 Drama nominees, that leaves more open space. And with the support Greengrass is getting, maybe there will even be a Best Director nomination in store. In any event, if it can hit at the Globes, it can retain it's momentum from the critics awards support (not to mention the critics' top 10 lists, a few of which have started to pop up already with United 93 on them, and in some cases at #1).
Peace,
Mike.

To not have United 93 in the running would be a travesty. I can still remember the wind blowing into Greengrass' face for trying to tackle 9/11. To have those kind of prejudices against your movie and turn them around, you just can't ignore that.

I still think United 93 is not The Academy's cup of tea for Best Picture, particularly since Oscar is mostly LA-based with Hollywood actors biased against non-career actors. And there is no precedent for a film with such poor box office in terms of its legs and week-to-week drop making BP.
btw, United 93 is still in my top ten of the year.

A United 93 smash and destroy thread is needed, like the Crash Bash.
Perhaps in a few more days.

I still think it won't be nominated.

United 93 is still (and will probably remain) the best movie of the year.

You and your ugly avatar should do it. We all know how that turned out for Crash last year.

If it wins Best Picture, it'll be looked at years from now as one of the worst winners ever.
"2006?" someone will say, "wasn't that the year The Departed, Dreamgirls, Children Of Men, Iwo Jima, Little Children, The Queen, Babel and hundreds of other better films were all robbed of Best Picture because that sub-par faux documentary got the sentimentality vote?"
"Yeah," another will respond, "I hate it when awards get given to incredibly shitty films just because they're topical."

U93 is still one of the best movies I've seen this year and in terms of "Oscar"-films, only The Departed is ahead to me as of now. I strongly hope to see BP and BD noms.

So it looks like, after all this, a Best Picture nomination is effectively out of the picture.
*sigh*
I still maintain, though, that if there is some sort of upset the morning nominations are announced, it will be United 93 in the Best Pic category.
What do you guys think, though? Is Greengrass as out as the film is? Is editing all we're gonna get, if that?

This probably won't be nominated for Best Picture, which saddens me a bit, considering its status as Libs' Favorite Film of 2006.

You know where they dropped the ball? Had they hired an A-list singer/songwriter and played a Philadelphia-esque song over the credits, at least that would have been a definite Best Song nom.
...or maybe a song like this to draw in the youth demographic...

I'm calling United 93 to knock out Babel for the 'important' movie BP nomination .

Well, it's not like we got a Best Pic nomination, but going into this morning, a Director nomination alone, I think, would have made this thread a success.
And look at us! An editing nom, too!
And time for a clever thread title change!

My #1 film of the year, so I'm glad to see it was well represented with a BD nomination.
loyal...trust me when I tell you this, I feel for you, but at least LMS makes the season not a total waste and gives you something.
I do wish you'd jump on the Departed's bandwagon, though. It'll make a winner out of you. It doesn't bother me that I'm rooting against the Clint.

I'm so happy Paul Greengrass got nominated. Too bad it couldn't knock out The Queen (imo) for Best Picture.
