Little Children starts playing here tomorrow. To see Little Children or Children of Men? :-O Not even a question. Little Children of Men But seriously, I havent seen Little Children but Children of Men is one of the best things ever committed to film.
I'll have to trust you and go rush way to Children of Men. Not that I need to; I've been Cuaron's bitch longer than you have and I'm sure to love it. I've also fancied Kate Winslet since I saw Titanic and Little Children looks haute. Dolce said it saved the year. My allegiances are being tested.
I'll fit both into my plans for the next 48 hours, for sure. Unfortunately, they are showing at the opposite ends of town.

funny stuff.
It's always best to align yourself with me rather than The Dolce. I am, afterall, the better dancer.
Oh really?
Well, I've heard you were ace at rimming, but this is news to me. The Dolce is much, much more interesting, however. She loves transsexuals just as much as you do, if not more, and has fantastic taste in corsets.
Yes, dolce, I remember. :-O

But seriously. I'll probably use whatever I want on my list. I just can't ignore Jackass: Number Two. It's too good to be ignored.

1. United 93
2. The Departed
3. Dreamgirls
4. Little Miss Sunshine
5. Little Children
6. The Devil Wears Prada
7. Borat
8. Notes on a Scandal
9. The Holiday
10. Cars
I'm presumably seeing Children of Men, so there's a strong possibility it will knock Cars off this list.
I also still haven't seen Half Nelson, The Queen, Volver and The Last King of Scotland, among others.

You could skip The Queen, its really not a good movie at all. Neither is The Last King of Scotland. Both would get B-/C+ from me...upon consideration.

You should not skip The Queen. Not only is it splendidly acted, it has some of the most compelling scenes of the year....
Watch it when you get a chance. If anything, it is a diverting way to spend a few hours. Well worth a trip. It's extremely interesting, which surprised me.

I'm surprised how many lists I've seen The Devil Wears Prada on. You people are all so gay, and I say that with love.
Oh, and by the way, Little Children is hilarious, poignant, depressing, and disturbing all at once. Kate Winslet and Jackie Earle Haley are the best lead actress and supporting actor this year, imo. Go see it.

I disagree. Not only is it incredibly rewatchable (and entertaining), it features one of the best performances of the year. And it is about fashion, which is a huge plus.
AND Madonna was featured on the soundtrack, multiple times.
Seriously, I enjoy it too much. This year hasn't been all fireworks, so it fits in just fine with most of the company. I'd at the very least like to reward one of the only memorable comedies of the year.

I never saw Downfall.
By the way since I have no shame, here is my current top ten list for the year:
1. Casino Royale
2. The Departed
3. Jackass: Number Two
4. Little Miss Sunshine
5. Click
6. X-Men: The Last Stand
7. Clerks 2
8. Inside Man
9. Running Scared
10. American Dreamz
To slightly explain myself, Jackass made me laugh harder than almost any film ever, Click was the closest I've ever come to crying in a theatre/most emotionally grasped I've been, X-Men is the perfect popcorn film, Dreamz I can't explain and don't ask me to.

I agree. Even though DWP may be slightly bumpred out of my top 10 when all is said and watched, it's definitely one of the most top-10 worthy mainstream/fun/rewatchable/box-ffice successes in recent years.
I have yet to see Notes on a Scandal and Children of Men in theatres (and probably Venus too) but along with my top 10 (in the first post of this thread) I'll post my top 20 as well.
01. Letters from Iwo Jima
02. The Departed
03. The Queen
04. United 93
05. Pan's Labyrinth
06. Little Miss sunshine
07. Volver
08. Little Chidren
09. The Fountain
10. Devil Wears Prada
11. V for Vendetta
12. thank you for Smoking
13. Blood Diamond
14. Half Nelson
15. The Prestige
16. Babel
17. Hard Candy
18. An Inconvenient Truth
19. Akeela and the Bee
20. up for grans still -- couldn't find a worthy enough film Lake House maybe comes closest!
Let me see if I can dig up my top 10 of 2005....
01. Munich
02. The New World
03. Brokeback Mountain
04. Hustle and Flow
05. Cinderella Man
06. Good Night and Good Luck
07. Match Point
08. A history of violence
09. Broken Flowers
10. Batman Begins
Looking back... Junebug and Capote would have probably been alternates for #9 and #10

It also had a completely horrible ending, a subpar performance by the usually stellar Anne Hathaway, poor pacing and an unsatisfying script. The characters were shallow (yes, I get it is fashion...not referring to that). I've got the book in my "to read" queue" but I've been told it is phenomenal when compared to the movie.
Oh, and Madonna is not a reason to watch a film.

You've been told the book of The Devil Wears Prada is phenomenal compared to the movie? Who did you hear this from, a mentally insane person?
The book is actually kind of bad, the movie is shockingly good considering how meh the book is.

Well...she is my boss...and the manager of a psychiatric practice.
I'll have to check it out and compare.
Just wasn't a fan of the movie. Would be nowhere near my top 10.

Libs is absolutely correct. I "only" gave The Devil Wears Prada a B-, but that's a compliment considering how bad the book is. One of my least favourite reads in a long time. The movie down plays and even cuts out completely some of the crap in the book, so I give the screenplay writer some credit.
Peace,
Mike.

Heh, well I will take your word on it (still will read it eventually).
Glad I wasn't the only one who wasn't awed by the film, you've earned points in my book, Mike.

Agree that you can skip The Queen. Although you probably won't dislike it as much as me, I think you thought that Capote was just okay. And The Queen is very comparable to that film in terms of its slowness and exclusivity to those with prior interest in the subject material. The audience at the theater I was in seemed to have all fallen asleep by the time the credits started rolling (although they were all aged 60+ at a 9:30pm showing so it could be past their bedtime).

To me The Queen is much more engaging than Capote (even the latter did improve on the second viewing), and it has a lot more humors.

There were little things about it that were good, yes, and Mirren was good (as an imitation -- see my rant on this subject ), but other then that it was like a documentary, hardly what I would consider good "entertainment". If I wanted a documentary I'd pay to go see one, the truth is, I wanted something enlightening, something moving...I got none of that.
Eh. We'll never agree on this. Heh.

Yeah, we will never agree on this. I got everything I wanted except for the one-noted Philip; I was both entertained and enlightened, and there were some heart-breaking scenes such as when Queen drove her car into the river.

Oh Jeff....
The Holiday?
Imagine Me and You?
Dreamgirls?
I strongly disagree on those choices. Departed, LMS, Fountain, and Thank you for Smoking are good choices. I'm indifferent to Borat and haven't seen Inside Man and Children of Men yet (will have seen both in 2 weeks time).
I thought The Queen was one of the most superb films this year. It didn't play out like a documentary at all. As opposed to what many think or have said, I found both the lead performance AND the movie quite engaging.
