That means YOU!


That's right. Why don't we all post our own top 10 lists and then maybe we can score them and come up with a great KJ Critics Top 10 List?

The only problem is we're not real critics and no doubt have missed some movies we would have liked to see in theatres or some didn't play near you. So, we can adjust the scores as top 10 lists are updated in the following few months.

So, I'll start it off. I have yet to see Children of Men and catch up on a few that are on DVD but so far, I have...

There's a huge stickied thread in Cinemania which is basically the same thing. But guess it'd be easier now in this one to compile results as there lists are updated every now and then.

I'll make one, but I'm going to make it a more proper list. Which means that "SAW III" may not be on the list. It's a personal favorite, especially in the "SAW" franchise, but I'm going to go with well-made films that I loved.

Expect lots of "Children of Men", "Little Miss Sunshine", "Casino Royale", etc.

I don't see why people (that's YOU, X!) feel it necessary to distinguish between "favorites" and "the best." It's always smacked of catering to critics, if you ask me (maybe you don't).

Just list what you love. That, in my opinion, is "the best."

Hmm... maybe you're right. I was afraid of pissing off the andaroo.temps and the yoshues of KJ. Well screw those guys! I'm doing the real deal list!!

I'm kind of in X's camp, my top 10 list at this point is riddled with blockbusters and non-critical films, it was just that kind of year for me. I still need to see a lot of these contenders though.

Don't fall into the peer pressure, X.

Saw III has more quality in the first six seconds than Dreamgirls, United 93, Prada, LMS, Children of Men and (*insert other praised oscar film that isn't The Departed) combined!

There is totally a difference between posting Best and Favorite lists. Like, I pray that Letters from IWO Jima isn't Raffiki's favorite film. Unless he's super super weird, I hope Raffiki doesn't look "forward" to watching Letters from IWO Jima, and, when with friends, asks "Do y'all wanna watch LFIWOJ?" Haha.

But, he sees something in it that's fascinating.

I'm not for people whoring up to critics, and pretending to like films that everyone else does (*cough* Children of Men *cough* The New World *cough*), but there's a distinction between Best and Favorite that should be clarified when asking for "Top" 10 Lists.

Chances are, though, that if a film is a "favorite," and it's not a guilty pleasure, it'll be in your "best of" list...

I've seen like six movies or so since September, so I'm definitely not ready to post the list...

But I don't think anything will top The Departed and Borat for me.

As for lists...I went to make one and could only come up with ...7 films that I thought were even worthy of being "Top 10" worthy, I'll post that later, see if I can add one or two more perhaps, but I won't have ten.

I agree with that. Guilty pleasure can be a big part of being a "favorite". I love Requiem for a Dream, but I don't look forward to ever seeing it again voluntarily.

While Rear Window remains No. 1 on both my all-time "favorite" and "best" lists, but Raiders of the Lost Ark, while a little lower on the best list, could certainly challenge the top spot for the favorite.

I've only seen 20 films this year, so no list from me yet until probably Feb.

...I thought you didn't like Downfall

Downfall was the worst movie I saw in '05 outside of The Honeymooners.

I think I've posted the reasons a number of times. And while we're at the topic of best vs. favorite, it belongs on neither a "best of" nor "favorite" list.

But films like Borat and Raiders of the Lost Ark would still be acceptable candidates for a "Best of..." lists. Saw III and Jackass: Number Two technically aren't.

It is on my "Best of 2005" list as well...second only to Brokeback Mountain as a matter of fact.

Huh.

Yea, that's the thing about Brokeback... the sex isn't good enough to make the movie a guilty pleasure. It flies on its own... Quite well, too. One of '05's best, no doubt... Munich is definitely the best. I've been convincing people of that by lending out my CE DVD and forcing bored classes to watching The New World. So far, three people have liked it.

Anyway, this is mine for now. I'll remove this and put in a new one should I love Little Children (which I'm seeing soon) or Children of Men (tomorrow)...

Obviously, my list is an amalgam of "fun" movies (Prada, Shinshine, Royale... and to a degree, Shortbus... but we won't go there!) and of the "best" of the year. I really cared for all of these films, and there are a select few worth mentioning otherwise... but otherwise, not too shabby. Could have been better.

I'll tell you one thing, even if I love Little Children and Children of Men, Prada is firmly staying at 10.

Ah.

I'm too tired to have gotten that without the over explanation.

Oh yeah...and Munich is probably a tie for first...so Downfall would be in 2nd or 3rd spot. Forgot about that.

I've seen 42 films this year, more than any year ever. And about 25 of them were recommendable IMO!

My current, rough top 10, having not seen The Queen, The Departed, Babel, the Iwo Jima movies, Pan's Labyrinth, Little Children, Half Nelson, Volver, The Proposition (Which I'll watch once I find the DVD from Netflix that I misplaced), Deliver Us From Evil or The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, among others:
