Jesus Camp: B

Award-winning documentary about Evangelical Christians who send their kids to Bible camp and basically indcotrinate them with the mega-church beliefs. They say prayers and blessings over a cardboard George Bush and smash ceramic cups meant to represent the current poilitical system. I appreciated the subject matter, but the movie was a little too haphazard and a little too short.

HATE CRIME - 9/10 (A-)

WOW! What a surprise! I thought it might be good due to the promising Roger Ebert quotes on the film's jacket, but I never expected it to be as good as it was. I thought it might be a little preachy like a lot of the low budget gay films that tread the same territory, but it manages not to be. It's a realistic portrayal of bigotry and how it affects the people it comes in contact with. This is easily the most important film of the year so far, and it should remain so by the end of the year. It's a drama/mystery/thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. It throws a few nice surprises our way, without becoming unrealistic.

This is a must see! It's unfortunate this film couldn't get more attention. It should be shown in schools. Copies should be donated to libraries too. I want to buy it and lend it out, and hopefully they'll tell others about it. Don't miss it!

BOBBY - 8/10 (A-)

A fascinating and powerful account about the day of Robert F. Kennedy's assassination, told through the eyes of writer-director Emilio Estevez and a massive cast made up of many great actors. At first, the recognizable faces make the film feel a bit strange (the first five minutes feature almost every member of the ensemble on display), but as the film delves into each individual's story it finally finds its balance. There is only one storyline that really rings false - featuring Shia LaBeouf and Brian Geraghty as two teens who meet an LSD dealer (Ashton Kutcher) and spend the majority of the film on an acid trip. Kutcher is horrible and the worst of the ensemble, donning a ridiculous wig and coming off as completely laughable. Other than that, each storyline is incredibly involving and the actors are all at the top of their game. It is interesting to note that in a film featuring such recognized thespians as Anthony Hopkins and Laurence Fishburne, the best performances come from unexpected places. Lindsay Lohan is the best as a bride-to-be who is marrying a high school classmate (Elijah Wood) in order to keep him out of the war. Lohan deserves recognition for her subtle yet incredibly effective performance here, and once again proves that despite all the negative publicity surrounding her she is actually quite a talented actress. Demi Moore makes a great comeback here as an alcoholic singer who is in a loveless marriage. Christian Slater also shows his talent once again after a string of disappointments. Playing a seemingly racist employee of the hotel in which the events occur, it is fascinating to watch the character progress and Slater makes the transition completely believable. Sharon Stone, Freddy Rodriguez, Helen Hunt and William H. Macy also deserve recognition for their superb work here. One of the most surprising performances, however, comes from Nick Cannon. After a number of annoying turns in forgettable films, he comes out of nowhere and delivers one of the best male performances of the year - filled with raw emotion and lots of depth. Emilio Estevez has made the film a bit too long, and some of the subplots could have been shortened or excised completely. It is also somewhat biast in the fact that it takes a completely liberal view towards various issues. But the superb work by the great cast and the haunting, tearjerking final 10 minutes make Bobby worth seeing.

Freaks (1932) - One of the most disturbing and flat-out twisted movies I have ever seen. I really have no idea what kind of a rating to give a film like this.

Mark of the Vampire (1935) - A short and brisk film with a plot twist that barely brings it above the average 1930's horror flick. B-

Mortal Kombat (1995) - A surprisingly enjoyable film. Probably the single best video game adaptation ever made. B-

Scream (1996) - An incredibly clever, intricate horror film that turns the slasher genre on its head. I am tempted to call this Craven's best work, even better than A Nightmare on Elm Street. A+

This morning:

SCOOP - 8/10 (B+)

Loved it! It was highly entertaining and fun to watch. Woody Allen has been on a roll lately with movies that are actually really good (MELINDA & MELINDA, MATCH POINT, SCOOP). Until recently I didn't like his movies. Well, I did like ANYTHING ELSE, which was the first movie of his I watched that I liked.

TIME TO LEAVE - 7/10 ( B )

An interesting, effective film. It has a couple of beautiful moments, my favorite being the one in the park with the main character's sister. I felt so bad for her throughout the film because he was such a jerk to her and I wanted him to sit down and talk to her. He did at least call her, but he told her they would get together and he never did before his time was up. It was heartbreaking. The ending was really well-done.

I don't know, the main character isn't easy to like, but by the end you kind of feel for him anyway, though mostly the people around him since he was selfish for not telling them what was going on.

GUYS & BALLS - 8/10 (A-)

HUGE fucking surprise! I was actually really disappointed Netflix shipped this one to me because it was on my queue as sort of a maybe someday when I didn't have anything better to rent movie. Well, I forgot to update my queue before they sent out new ones to me and my first couple of choices weren't available so they ended up sending this one. I wasn't really looking forward to watching it but I decided I'd get it out of the way and send it back quick so I could get something else. I never expected it to be so extremely enjoyable. It's a major crowd-pleasing kind of movie; like one of those charming British flicks, except it's a german film and even better than most of the charming British movies (at least the ones as of late). Never in a million years could I have expected it to be so damn entertaining.

I loved David Rott as Sven. He is the most adorable thing I've seen in ages. The relationship between his character and the main character couldn't have been sweeter or more cute. I also thought Lisa Potthoff as Susanne, the main character's sister, was a cutie. She reminded me of Franka Potente when she has blonde hair.

I can't recommend this movie more. I will be buying it for sure.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST - 5/10 ( C )

My friend and I were really bored. We didn't really know what was going on because we didn't care after awhile ;). I mean we still kept watching, but couldn't wait for it to be over. If I had seen this in theaters I'd have slit my wrists. I could never sit through it again. People who saw this more than once in theaters are psychotic :P. Talk about overlong. KING KONG was longer and yet it seemed shorter. It's sad but it kind of drags down the first one. I hope the third can be good, maybe surprise after a disappointing sequel like HARRY POTTER did, but I doubt it. It seems like it will turn into a bore like the LOTR series.

CAMP SLAUGHTER - 5/10 (C-)

It was funny, but disappointing. I expected it to be more entertaining than it was.

LOVING ANNABELLE - 7/10 (B-)

A good movie with a bit higher production design than you'd expect for a movie like this. It has some really pretty scenes and some very good music. I really liked the main young girl. The ending is where it goes wrong and it's like, "That's it?" Thankfully it has a much better alternate ending that should definitely be watched after seeing the movie. It makes it ok that the original ending is a disappointment. I just don't see why they didn't use it to begin with.

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE - 7/10 (B-)

It was good but disappointing and overrated. The pageant part was really cool and funny though. Nobody in it was award worthy.

THE WICKER MAN - 4/10 (D+)

An uninteresting and laughable movie. The ending was kind of cool and wicked though, but that's it.

THE NAKED MILE - 7/10 ( B )

Not quite as good or well-done as BAND CAMP, but still good and John White is adorable.

TALLADEGA NIGHTS - 6/10 (B-)

Not bad, but I was actually thinking I might like it more. I found it too overlong and dragged out. I also found it more annoying than funny at times. I just don't find watching idiotic movie characters very funny even if it is on purpose. The whole "baby Jesus" prayer thing got annoying fast. In fact, the dinner table scene was just plain annoying altogether. The kids were annoying and them letting the brats act the way they did and his wife being turned on by him telling her dad off was just stupid and most of this scene was just grating and eye-roll inducing. I did like Amy Adams in it. She was a cutie. I thought the last half hour was good too.

Overall it's a decent movie that I'd buy really cheap someday, but it's also one of the year's most overrated.

WORLD TRADE CENTER - 5/10 ( C )

Loved Maggie in it (she's adorable as always), and I liked the ending (the little girl was so cute), but that's about it. I expected more and was disappointed. It drags and drags and is mostly uninteresting, with the stuff with Cage and Pena being the worst. The stuff with Maggie is interesting because she's Maggie. The movie itself is not moving or anything, just cheesy and dull. However, not surprisingly, I came close to feeling something during the scenes with Maggie. I was soooo tempted not to even watch it all within the first half hour, but I stuck it out so I could at least give it a rating.

MATERIAL GIRLS - 7/10 (B-)

After the excruciating first 25 minutes it (in which I almost decided not to finish it) it got a lot better. I only got through the first 25 minutes Saturday night before shutting it off. I revisited it today from where I left off and I'm glad I did. It wasn't nearly as terrible as it seemed it would be. It's nothing special, but it was entertaining and ended up being a guilty pleasure.

THE FAIR-HAIRED CHILD (Masters of Horror) - 8/10 (B+)

Surprisingly one of the better ones. I wasn't expecting much since it was from the creator of FEAR DOT COM and HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (I did like this one, but FEAR DOT COM was terrible). I expected more along the lines of these two, but it was much better. It would have been a 7/10 ( B ) until the ending, which I really liked. Definitely recommended to horror fans.
